All Sauvie Island Searches

Lol...I'm not so good at extrapolating so, would you care to share with a lay-extrapolater where you might expect a step-mother to dispose of the body of their step-child? Near home, far away from home, in water, buried...?

This might be a good subject for another thread because there are many things to consider. The who, how and where of it and fitting that into the timeline we are working with.

Here I've been a Googling LOL and haven't found much about 'Stepmother Killers' - I tried many ways. I didn't learn much. Several stepmothers had either their husband or family help in the disposal. One placed the boys body in a strip mine and burned him.

Interesting tho, whatever I Googled, both Kyron and Zhara popped up.

And then there was Snow White whose stepmother planned to kill her . . . . have the huntsman kill her in the woods and bring back only her heart, leaving her body there. I bet that story was based on what was common back in the days when Grimm was writing, eh?

I don't think it is a common occurrence for a stepmother to kill the children in the family. I did read one statement where the motivation for stepmothers and bio mothers in child murders is virtually the same. Hence, it could be the way they dispose of bodies is about the same too. IMO

lol...yes, I realize this isn't exactly the thread for this topic...however, it is something to consider in relation to LE search locations. We can surmise that the pings & possible sightings of the white truck have been some of the reasons LE have concentrated so much of their searches there but, it's also food for thought IF there is research out there as to how & where Stepmothers dispose of their murdered stepchildren...kwim?

The question was not meant to derail the topic of this thread at all! :)

Oh, I know that. I really thought it would be a great brainstorming thread.

SNOW over the weekend is forecast for Portland. I doubt if there will be any new searches for a few days.

  • #885
I don't think the snow will be down as low as SI, more like up in the mountains and the west hills, thank goodness! But it will be down in the low 40s which makes it pretty cold!

I hope you're right. I highly doubt Terri went mountain climbing to dispose of Kyron anyway, so I'm hoping they don't have to worry about snow too much.

Yep, I think the threat of Valley snow is gone but the hills might still get some.

For future reference if someone is interested in watching the weather:
Forecasters say the snow line on Monday will be about 500 ft.

Skyline School is around 700 ft
Westwind Farms is between 700-800 feet
Sheltered Nook is around 300 ft
Sauvie island is almost at sea level.

I have been following the Ohio case and haven't been here in awhile. Are there still divers in the water?

The case I was following, the family members were each found in a plastic garbage bag and stuffed in a hollow tree. Kyron is small, who knows, maybe she did that.

WBers you are all wonderful.

Divers were there last weekend but have not heard anything publicly about more dives this week. Kaine alluded to more searching in the coming weeks/months but nothing specific.

LOL...ain't that the truth. The more they hype up a storm, the less likely the snow will fall but we shall see. I'm getting out of the frozen NW and heading for the beach! ;)

Does anyone remember the date of the first search (reported by media obviously)
AT Sauvie's Island?

I think it would be nice to work sort of a "timeline" map as far as the dates and areas searched on Sauvie's. (and all other searches)

I do remember them being there in the summer, and on the side closest to HWY 30..
I just cannot remember the date..

To add to that, I do remember them going back in August? up near the school AND NW Old Germantown Rd amongst other areas AFTER they had searched the "south" side of Sauvie's a month earlier.

**Here is my thought pattern..

-Area around Skyline School searched (dates/areas)
-ground, K9, air, divers in pond by school, and.....??

-Sauvie Island searched (dates/areas)
-ground, air, horses, in water-marsh areas, and...??

-??Bishop Rd area searched (date)
-not sure if this was ever confirmed?

-NW Old Germantown Rd, Germantown Rd, areas off Cornelius Pass, etc searched
(dates/areas)
-ground, K9, and....???

-Sauvie Island searched again (date/areas)
-ground, horses, atv's, and....??

-Sauvie Island searched w/dive teams (date/areas)
-divers on boats, divers inland in water areas... and....???

I do know of some areas personally that have been searched that I have seen that have not been always reported in MSM, especially on the island but also near Corn Pass..

I'd like to start a timeline and put it under "All Searches" perhaps.. or???

I only have my own photobucket pictures for some records, but I know MSM articles have a lot of info on dates/locations of places searched..

-----------------
*Something lead them to the island early on after Kyron went missing.

*then they focused back up by the school and the NW Old Germantown area AND other areas near there

*now they either seem to be focusing back on Sauvie's, or are they merely just finishing up the search they started earlier this summer?? (as it would make sense, they would search areas closest to HWY 30 first, eliminate, then move further away.. IF this is what they are doing)

Does my train of thought make sense?? =)

*disclosure, I just listed the above quickly on the fly, it is not accurate as it is just by memory. Please feel free to add or start a new thread or put the timeline in the correct thread so we can all add to it =)

Does anyone remember the date of the first search (reported by media obviously)
AT Sauvie's Island?

It looks like the first search was June 11, exactly one week after Kyron went missing:

Earlier today (June 11), riders on horseback began searching Sauvie Island and a Blackhawk helicopter from the Oregon National Guard could also be seen above the island. By 10:30 a.m., the helicopter had made at least two passes, along a north-south line as the mounted riders began to head north along Sauvie Island Road.

Sauvie Island resident Mary Douglas said she saw the helicopter flying over the island on Thursday, but today was the first time she saw anyone searching the ground.

Maybe that's when they received the cell ping data.

I am wondering, from all of the photos of searches we have been provided with here, can LE truly rule out any of the areas they have already searched? I ask because every area looked like it was almost impossible to find anything and also because often a person is later found in an area already searched. So can LE really say that they are eliminating places where Kyron could be?

I've had the same thoughts. Just because the didn't find him, doesn't necessarily mean he wasn't there.

Remember the searches of the San Francisco Bay for Laci Peterson? Then she washes up a few months later. Same thing could possibly happen here whether he is found in or near water or, on land buried or obscured by vegetation.

Free,
Here's another MSM link to the June 11 Sauvie Island search. Starts at about 1:50 on the video clip. Shows horses, etc., and an interview with a Skyline parent who lives on Sauvie.

Hi Free, You say *Something lead them to the island early on after Kyron went missing.

I wish we could get the listing of calls that went into the MC dispatch line for the morning of the 4th as that is where the answer might be found.

If it is true a white truck driving wildly in tandem with another car squirreled off the road and into the ditch it could be why they first had SI in their sights. 11am is the time to find out about if it is possible. This is unconfirmed but was witnessed by several locals who say they did call LE. I sure hope that is true. IMO

In Portugal during Madeleine McCann's case we found a record of the original 911 call and what was said when the first 2 respondents went to the motel room the McCann's were renting. It was very interesting to read what those 2 officers said. Ya Ya

Fourth Day of Search on Sauvie Island

Meanwhile, on the 11th day of the search for Kyron, investigators intensified their search in the area of Sauvie Island. From KGW's Sky 8 helicopter, searchers in wetsuits were seen moving through waist-high water while someone on shore provided directions.

A dive team searched swamps and ponds around the rural NW Portland area, and crews also searched around the Multnomah Channel. Investigators would not say what led them to this area, but it was the fourth consecutive day that crews scoured Sauvie Island.

June 7th: From Diana Olsen, coordinator of the Multnomah County Sheriff’s Office search and rescue operation:

Olsen said searchers on Sunday were not able to complete the 2-mile area from Skyline to Kyron’s home and hope to do that today.

She said searchers today will focus on an area known as wood mill by Cornelius Pass and Northwest Sheltered Nook Road.

“Yesterday they were in the thick blackberries,” Olsen said. “They spent seven hours in there and only did a third of it.”

. . . She said in addition to those areas, searchers also have responded to requests from Kyron’s father, Kaine, about areas where the boy may be, including a horse pasture in Banks, which was searched Sunday.

Olsen said ground search efforts will be reassessed later today after the FBI looks at a map of the region.

Searchers are looking at "more specific areas" around the school, Gates said, but wouldn't elaborate. Investigators also have interviewed 99 percent of the students and talked with most of the school's staff and parents, he said. At this point, police don't believe they need to spread the search nationwide.

So far, Gates said, searchers have combed a half-mile radius around the school, where Kyron is a second-grader and disappeared after he arrived early to go to a science fair. They've also looked at specific locations that Gates declined to identify.

He urged people living within four miles of the school, 11536 N.W. Skyline Blvd., to check their property after Kyron's family released a statement, imploring people to look for any signs of the boy.

"Please search your properties -- cars, out buildings, sheds, etc.," they said. "Also check with neighbors and friends who may be on vacation or may need assistance in searching. There are a lot of resources here to help you search, so please don't stop."

...crews from Jackson, Tillamook, Klamath, Clackamas and Washington counties and Pacific Northwest Search and Rescue could be seen setting up a base camp at about 7:30 a.m. today on Northwest Quarry Road, less than one mile southeast of the school.

By midmorning, more than a dozen searchers clad in bright orange and yellow hats had descended upon the area surrounding the Horman home a few miles from the school. They searched the thick brush and trees along the main road leading to the house as well as the family's property.

Several canine unit vehicles were also seen heading to the area. Wednesday, Multnomah County officials said horseback units, as well as aircraft, would also be used in today's search.

The sheriff's office said searchers have covered "every piece of ground" within a 2 1/2-mile radius around Skyline School but the plan is to go back over the area with even more care.

While the school is near Portland, it's is surrounded by hilly terrain, much of it covered by tall grass alternating with pockets of forests.

Crews from 18 Oregon Counties Join Search

missarealgjpg-c30eb8ff0a25e5f0_large.jpg

As much as it's been about basic boots on the ground -- and in the saddle on horseback -- the search also has employed the latest technology. Search groups are using satellite tracking devices so the communication coordinators know exactly where they have searched or re-searched on the grid.

In grid searches, people walk side by side to look for small clues, said Steve Rollins, rescue leader and past president of Portland Mountain Rescue, which joined the search Thursday.

Canine units, including tracking dogs trained to search for one particular person, have worked every day looking for Kyron, officials said.

Air scent dogs also have been deployed, said Russ Gubele, president of Mountain Wave, an emergency communications and search and rescue group based in Gresham. They're trained to find a human being -- anyone -- in a particular site.

Searchers also have access to cadaver dogs, but Gubele wouldn't say whether any have checked the fields or the school. He also wouldn't say whether dogs have searched the school, but Gates said search teams have checked Skyline extensively several times.
