In terms of the trial, it sometimes starts at 8, sometimes 9 or 10. SMK posted upthread that it starts at 9, so that will be in two hours. Knox's lawyers will give closing arguments, and then the jury will withdraw to deliberate.

How long did it take for Hellman's decision? Was it an hour, 8 hours ... anyone remember?

This:

"Even if it rules in her favor, there may still be a price to pay, as Kercher’s family could sue for the profits from her book."

Could that really happen?

LONDON — The father of murdered British student Meredith Kercher vowed never to accept a penny from freed Amanda Knox.

http://nypost.com/2011/10/24/meredith-kerchers-family-says-it-will-not-take-a-cent-from-amanda-knox/

"I can assure you that it's absolute nonsense," said Lyle Kercher, the brother of Knox's roommate Meredith Kercher, referring to British tabloid reports that he and his family intended to sue Knox.

"I'm not even sure where these fantastical ideas come from sometimes," he told KING TV in Seattle.

Basically, when she sent an email to the Judge, he asked why she was not present at her own appeal. She requested the appeal, yet she is not interested in attending.

this is so misleading, and untrue.

amanda requested the appeal that led to their 2011 acquittal. she most certainly did not request that the SCC throw the acquittal out, forcing a second appeal trial.

Knox and Sollecito appealed the verdict.
That resulted in the Hellman decision, which was annulled.
That means we're back to the appeal requested by Knox and Sollecito.

So yes, Knox requested the appeal and then decided to not attend.
It doesn't look good, but the decision will be based on the evidence so it does not matter, except in terms of assessing character, which does matter.

Re: The Forgotten Killer

So, did Tom Wright (80 page book compiler) know Amanda when she was an infant, and got to know the family 15 years ago? I hope he was a bit more precise when compiling the 80 pages.

"But Tom, who has known Knox, 26, since she was an infant, says the facts are overwhelming and that’s what drove him to compile this book."
...

"My family have known her family for maybe 15 years, we knew Amanda from middle school onwards, and knew this whole thing was impossible."

Opinion: Stephen Vladeck
law professor at American University in Washington DC

"But Mr Vladeck thinks the US protection against being tried twice for the same crime - known as double jeopardy - does not apply in this case: "There's nothing in the treaty that requires Italy to uphold the US legal system."

Letter from Amanda

http://www.corriere.it/cronache/14_...ia-aa271b24-8971-11e3-be5b-d457abaa7165.shtml

This is Google Translate on two paragraphs from the text:

A letter of Amanda Knox for Stephanie , sister of Meredith Kercher , the student killed in Perugia on the night between the first and November 2, 2007 . But the envelope was closed : "I still feel the need to talk with her," said Stephanie . He added: "We have to put up with the Italian judicial system , but we would like the process to end. The verdict will not be a rematch . " The ruling is expected tonight in Florence.

The sealed envelope - "Amanda wrote you a letter, before the verdict , as if one day you will want to deliver ."
I had no idea what the reaction would have been Stephanie Kercher when I gave her the news during an interview a few days ago. Whatever the reaction, the abandonment of the interview , it would have been legitimate. But this girl amazingly strong and balanced not stop thinking about it, as it has for every other question . And then , slowly, he replied: " I'd have to think, I do not know , but today I'd like to read, because now I do not feel the need to talk with her." The word today , rather than ever, it is an act of great generosity and rationality. I do not think much will depend on the verdict , but the future behavior of Amanda in the weeks, months , years .

Does that make sense to anyone? ... and we should believe that the electronic tool is better with legal documents?

I know you didn't ask me, but I'll say this anyway - I firmly belive they will be convicted. Italy has a track record. Americans might be naive enough to think that Knox and Sollecito are guilty just because their media doesn't cover the case properly, but Europeans know more.

Italy is lower than Vladimir Putin's Russia when it comes to ECHR rulings on unfair trials. Only Turkey is keeping pace with Italy, and even Turkey hasn't managed to convict scientists of manslaughter for failing to predict an earthquake. Nor has Turkey managed to produce a Supreme Court judge who believes that George Bush was behind 9/11, or that women cannot be raped if they're wearing jeans.

Speaking as a European, Italy needs major political and judicial reform. IMO, MOO, :twocents:

I think that regardless of the verdict, it will surprise me. I have no idea which way this will go. On the one hand, a lack of evidence would put a complete end to the international spectacle. At the same time, Knox is still a convicted felon, and Sollecito can continue with his University studies. Guede will be released next year. None of their lives will ever be what was once possible.

The winner, legally speaking, would be Sollecito.

The loser has always been Meredith.

Guede is young, well behaved, and potentially open to rehabilitation. Knox is forever trapped in her own country.

"

"If they are convicted, no one can say that they are guilty beyond a reasonable doubt. If they are acquitted, many will have doubt about their innocence. Is this the fate that awaits the "Seattle girl," Amanda Knox and Raffaele Sollecito, who are suspected of being the other two culprits, along with Rudy Guede, already convicted of the murder of British student Meredith Kercher, which occurred November 1, 2007 in the bedroom of the house in Via della Pergola in Perugia.

Among convictions and acquittals that have taken place in recent years and doubts about the scientific expertise, the decision of the judges, which will probably come today, will probably not be able to provide a truth robust, reliable, granite.
"

I don't know which way the verdict will go. Verdicts never surprise me anymore.
I do know if it's "not guilty" I'll be extremely disappointed.

There are some excellent points in the article, although there are a couple of points where the timeline is not exact.

"There is no evidence whatsoever that had her boss not been able to clear himself, that Knox would have ever done so. She would have been content to allow him to remain in prison for decades as long as she got away. No one involved with the case contends the blaming of Patrick by Knox was anything other than a lie.
...

Police say Knox was turning cartwheels. She claims she was merely doing the splits.
...

"There's a lot of blood in the bathroom." (But not enough for Knox to have called police promptly with Meredith also missing?)
...

So both Guede, convicted of murder, and Knox, had essentially the same story, there was a black man in Meredith's room, and Meredith screamed. Knox had no way of knowing what Guede's testimony would be at the time, he was not apprehended until much later.
...

Setting the DNA aside, we have a defendant in the case having said he witnessed the knife cut Kercher. The only question is where it occurred, and how. First you say Meredith was cut by the knife, then you argue there is no proof of what you said. That is running from the truth.
...

Glass from the broken window appeared on top of items that were move around, as though rummaged through by a burglar, instead of underneath."

Apparently, there is speculation whether Knox's lawyers believe that Sollecito's lawyers are on the same team.

"L’avvocato di Amanda, Luciano Ghirga, non crede alla scelta della difesa di Raffaele (Giulia Bongiorno) di separare i destini processuali dei due ragazzi imputati: «Insieme staranno, insieme cadranno. La difesa di Sollecito non ha in nessun modo pregiudicato la posizione di Amanda».

Giulia Bongiorno precisa: «Convinta della innocenza anche di Amanda, è innegabile che solo nei suoi confronti vi sia una condanna passata in Cassazione per calunnia»."

"Amanda’s lawyer, Luciano Ghirga, doesn’t believe in the choice of the Raffaele defence (Giulia Bongiorno) to separate the procedural destinies of the two young accused: «Together they’ll stand, together they’ll fall. The Sollecito defence has in no way harmed Amanda’s position»."

Giulia Bongiorno explains: "Convinced of the innocence of Amanda also, it is undeniable that there is only against her a conviction by the Supreme Court for slander."
