The five witnesses associated with the broken down car were present from about 10:30 to perhaps 11:15. Two in the car in the parking lot entrance directly across the street, two friends in a car that was parked in the cottage driveway and a tow truck driver. The cottage as dark and quiet, as if nobody was home. If Meredith was alive at this time, what was she doing? Why didn't she do any of the things we might expect her to have done after coming home?
Meredith had been at Halloween parties with friends (Knox contacted Meredith because she wanted to join her, but Knox was not invited) until 6 AM. Later that afternoon, Meredith met with friends, had dinner and returned home at 9 PM. She had borrowed a text book for one day to prepare for an exam. When Meredith returned home, she may have studied or rested. We don't know exactly what she did when she arrived at home and we don't know exactly when she was murdered, but it may have been as late as 11:30.
All vehicles parked at the driveway or on the road in front of the cottage would not have seen a light on in Meredith's bedroom, as the bedroom was on the opposite side of the house.
This illustration was initially used to demonstrate where everyone was standing when police discovered the body, but I've re-purposed it to demonstrate why it is not at all surprising that someone on the road did not see what was going on in Meredith's bedroom, which was not at all visible from the curved, hilly road.
