Actually, after taking a look at the photos, it's entirely possible that it was a battery related explosion. I'm not familiar with the hybrid, but the explosion looks to be where the battery in a regular car would be located. Also, the car is outside and not in a garage. It could go either way at this point.

Explosive device. Foul Play. Not sure what device. This is criminal, turned over to ATF.

An "explosive device" was found in the car of a prominent Arkansas doctor as authorities investigated the blast outside his home that critically injured him and another person, a spokesman with the Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco and Firearms told FOX News.

It was in the front area of the car.

Dr. Pierce has no known enemies. Only Dr. Pierce injured. Wife had blood on her, but she was not injured.

I have actually driven one of these cars a number of times as a loaner car while mine was being serviced. When starting the car, you simply turn the key without even touching the gas pedal. They start simply on battery power only. It seems very difficult to believe that there was any kind of malfunction with that process that could cause an explosion. If he was outside of the car, then most likely he had done nothing other than push the remote button on the key itself. Once again, not too likely to cause an explosion.

They don't know yet if this was random or targeted.

I wonder if there was an event that was supposed to take place today and the doc needed to be stopped? A firing, disciplanary action, etc.

I had thought that too Hope4Lost. From what I have been able to glean from the internet the hybrid battery on Lexus SUV hybrids is located in the rear of the car. I may be wrong.

ETA: The doc lived in a nice house. I wonder if they have security cameras?

(snip)
The family friend says Dr. Pierce went to his Lexus hybrid Wednesday morning to warm up the car when his wife heard a boom.
She found her husband lying in a flower bed in front of the house.
ATF, FBI and other investigators are on the scene trying to figure out what happened.
The car was a Lexus hybrid.
West Memphis Police also did a routine search of the parking lot of Dr. Trent Pierce's practice.
Officers were checking tag numbers on cars parked a the doctor's office.

Comment left at the below link. This might explain reporters asking the Chief if he knew about pending lawsuits or court cases:

I messed up in my first reply. He was a DEFENDANT in a lawsuit (as physicians often are). That's not a "conspiracy." That's fact. And sometimes litigation leads people to get reallllly angry. Not saying this had any connection, but it's just interesting that Jan. 22 he was successful in severing from a lawsuit appeal.

What a bizarre case! I don't know what to make of it yet.
