A little too late for any damage control! IMO there is nothing they can say to sugar coat this. I'm appalled their even going to try.

I agree! They can SAY whatever they want, but actions always speak much louder than words.

(I got a flashback after reading your post of the Bakkers and all the fake tears.)

I guess we are to assume it will be the Parental Units conducting this self serving damage control? It says Family in the above People article? I would hope they would not parade the Family out for this! Oh and thanks BeginnersLuck but I cant take credit for the Bakkers post.

From the Duggar website:

Next Week

May 30, 2015

Next week we will sit down with Megyn Kelly on Fox News to share our hearts with you about the pain that we walked through as a family twelve years ago, the tears we all shed and the forgiveness that was given. We appreciate the outpouring of love and prayers for our family at this time.

-Jim Bob & Michelle Duggar

what the what?????? are they crazy????? Gitana said "Tone Deaf".....I'd say blind as well...

and
share our hearts with you about the pain
So it's Mom and Dad doing damage control??? They need to hide out until people run out of energy. NOT give people something to chew on. There is almost nothing they could say that would satisfy me....and I'm willing to bet they will make it soooooo much worse

Blinded by the light I guess. Pun intended.

Getting back to how and why this info was released now, I thought of a crazy scenario..lol... Hear me out. I would love if this were true:

Remember how Katie Holmes supposedly planned her escape from Tom Cruise by secretly hiring a security firm in consultation with her dad where they convinced TC that she needed a more secure house because the paps were bothering her, when in reality it was because the house would be secure from the cult? She didn't let on any of this to TC and then bam dropped the divorce and custody bombshell on him?

Anyway...

Maybe one of the victims let the info out in order to be eventually removed from the fundie world. Air out all the dirty laundry and then let JB and MD hang themselves with their own words for subsequent interviews and expose the lifestyle/religion to everyone and fracture the pretty photo to the point where: a) josh will be under scrutiny and b) the victim would be able to leave with help from, say Oprah or Dr. Phil?

That would be epic.

Or maybe Josh was getting ready to run for office and someone decided that shouldn't happen...

And I love how people bring up Lena Dunham in conjunction with JD. Yup. Two peas in a pod. Josh Duggar is on the same level of vile as LD.

So what caused this to come out now?? The Oprah thing was years ago, right? (Not snipping at you, Lisa, just using your post to ask the question.) That part has always been confusing to me. Is it because one of the victims wanted her name redacted out of the original report, and in processing that request, someone said, "Hey, look at this....dirt on the Duggars", and that was all it took?

Well speaking of the Oprah show , I 've been thinking on this every time it comes. Oprah champions the little guy, the abused person, the women's rights, etc. I'm very surprised it didn't become public at that time. kwim

ETA I'm certainly not blaming Oprah but it's just curious. You're in media, you're a big deal, you have a huge audience and you get this incredibly big deal of a story dropped in your lap. Curious as to why it went no farther at that time.

RSBM

Running for office...it seems that's been the end goal for the family since before their show started.......It didn't work out for Dad, so they transferred hopes onto their son

Had another thought-- this one is gross:

What if josh fully intends to run for office, given that he is forgiven and all... So the family released the information in order to control the dialogue about it (as it seems they are) and get it out ahead of someone else (a challenger) releasing the info.

This was in reference to a post where someone wondered if because of their sheltered life they did not realize what happened to them was not ok.

Oh, gotcha. Thanks for clarifying.

I believe the information came out now because InTouch weekly requested the police report under the Freedom of Information Act.

Here's the real story from the wiki page:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/19_Kids_and_Counting

Construction of their 7,000 square-foot (650 square-meter) house began in 2000 when they bought the lot and ordered two steel frames. One of the frames was not drilled correctly, so the Duggars received a third frame which was used to make the girls' room and the industrial kitchen. Discovery Networks completed it, finding local Arkansas construction workers to donate their skills and time. The home was completed on January 20, 2006 . Some of the painting, decorating, furnishings, appliances, and other finishing touches—such as a stocked pantry—were provided by Discovery Networks and corporate sponsors as part of the one-hour television special entitled 16 Children and Moving In.

Grifters gonna grift.

It's totally a thing in their culture. You guys have to read this article. For years one of my concerns about the Duggars is how the life they portray and promote is one that most cannot sustain. They are Quiverfull royalty. But there are so many other families with these beliefs and this culture that are not royalty. And many of those families seriously suffer.

The following article explains that in great detail with a lot of info about the quirks of the lifestyle, including the matching (promotes family unity).

Remember, Andrea Yates and her family was from this culture. And we know what happened with her - Can you imagine having post-partum psychosis but having to continually "trust God with the size of your family"? Oh boy.

I'm so dumb. I am not connecting the dots here!

We know for sure they didn't receive counseling because if they had the abuse would've been officially reported in 2003 not 2006 since counselors are mandatory reporters.

One place the Duggars show good planning though is their “family uniform”—developed back in the day of their ranch house. With two washers, and later in a rental house with only one washer, they simplified their laundry by having everyone wear the same color each day—khaki pants for all the boys, same color polo shirt for all the boys and similar dress or jumper for the girls reducing the sorting and number of loads of laundry. All the Duggar boys at that time wore black socks, while the girls wore white socks.

For some time, people have been alluding to these allegations online. Apparently it was a slow news week, so InTouch magazine decided too see if they could verify the rumors. They filed a Freedom of Information Act request, and got the heavily redacted police report.

I'm still gobsmacked it took this long to come out.

Because I suspect that as a fellow victim, she sympathized with the girls. Rather than sensationalize it at their expense, her production company contacted authorities. She had an allegation, but no hard evidence, and making the information public, if false, could result in a lawsuit against her, and if true, could taint the investigation.
