I don't have a problem with internet censorship such that smut, porn, animal cruelty and other sub-surface internet use is not longer accessible in Canada. I also have no problem with have a block imposed on proxy servers and re-routed proxy servers like the onion router (TOR). In fact, I think it's a healthy move.

Really? You would [support a] ban on porn to be viewable by adults?

I am not into porn, but damn, that is some serious control over what adults chose to do with their life....

And what is smut? Who defines that? Because my super religious parents would define a girl in a bikini as smut!
Also, what is porn? Again, my super religious parents believe that even faux simulated sex scenes in rated R or PG movies is porn....along w/ simple, non-sexual nudity.

I doubt the government is going to block porn ... but I do think that Canadians would prefer to block the stuff of animal torture rather than have the loss of personal freedom imposed by the Patriot Act.

It is a fact that he is innocent until proven guilty. It is a small amount of money for a government to pay don't worry about that.

If just this case I think he will end up in Penetanguishine. Who is going to argue that he is sane good luck to them. Like Nancy Eaton's killer he might get out one day on passes if he cooperates.

Unless of course he is linked to other crimes. (And to repeat ad nauseum my unpopular remark it is one reason other possible crimes have to be considered and tracked down).

I am not sure why I am being mocked for this suggestion that Luka be considered for outstanding cold cases one poster suggested I (or we if anyone is on my side with this) thinks Luka killed Kennedy or is responsible for all recent deaths.

We are helping him by focusing on the cannibalism it is the very thing that will get him declared insane. He is not really a cannibal forget that.

I just wondered about *after* conviction. Not that it really matters where, as long as he is locked up.
On another note--I think I'm going through "news" withdrawal, regarding this case. Anybody else? After nearly 2 weeks of constant news, and amateur sleuthing on my part (my first time getting this involved), I feel strangely "in limbo".

One thing that non-Canadians may not be aware of regarding post-sentence housing for criminals:

Much like our Criminal Code is federal (not provincial, like a state criminal code), those sentenced to crimes of 2 or more years are sentenced to prison (all federal). The criminal can be placed anywhere in Canada once he's been sentenced, taking into consideration whether he needs to be housed under minimum, medium or maximum security.

There's no such thing as a provincial prison (like a U.S. state prison)

They're different from city jails and regional detention centres, etc. which are for sentences of 1 day to 2-years-less-a-day or those who are awaiting trial.

It's a slippery slope, is what it is. It begins with smut and porn and then before you know it ALL free speech is curtailed. Censorship is a dnagerous thing.

Why would it matter? At this time, he is considered innocent.

Borg, I've seen it done all the time. He'll be pre-boarded through a separate entrance and I doubt anyone on the aircraft (beside the pilot, who has to know) will be any the wiser.

It would be highly unusual if the process were changed just for lil' old Luka. There's a reason LE just announced that there won't be any more announcements.

i told this story on another thread a loooooooooong time ago....
but, i am close to someone who is with the USAF and he and one other person recently had to transport a convicted USAF officer who had been sexually molesting his own daughter for many years...sentenced to Miramar in SD....a completely different state then where he was stationed and convicted.....

they went via a commerical plane....Homeland Security, along with the airlines had to be notified in advance and arrangements made for air marshals to be on that plane specifically....they were escorted in (guy was in cuffs but they were hidden and they had no weapons on them)...escorted on the plane first (before all other passengers), sat in the very last row and escorted off last into a waiting car. passengers were never told of this.

this happens often and nobody ever knows it is happening....

however, the case i spoke of never even made the news (not sure how it was kept so hush) so nobody recognized the guy.....luka on the otherhand made the front page of every paper and tabloid world-wide.......so im wondering if he will be in some serious disguise....

It doesn't really matter... that is just my anger talking. I am sure precautions would be taken to ensure the safety of everybody on board, and most people wouldn't even realise it. I know I sure would recognise him, and I would be annoyed, because that is just the way I am. But I wouldn't do anything about it, or go to the media about it or anything (I am generally against people going to the media with their 'story'. It serves no purpose other than a few minutes of attention, and I have no desire for attention). I wouldn't even come here and tell people "omg I was just on a flight with Magnotta". But eh, I am human, this case and the accused make me feel... angry.

But I don't have to worry about that, anyway, as I will never travel outside of this country. No need to.

Neither do we! It almost quietly passed into law earlier this year but there was such an uproar across Canada when Vic Toews said in the House of Commons to the opposition: "you're either with us, or you're with the child pornographers" that the government has quietly put it on the backburner for now.

I'm not sure when it'll rear it's ugly head again, but it'll be sometime this year, I'm sure.

They have been working toward this for a long time, and this case could be a perfect vehicle to set it in motion. They are setting up something called internet 2, where Canadian ISPs will block certain websites deemed questionable by governement, and others that would be pay per view. There is a tiny little bit of my conspiracy side that is asking if Luka was a useful stooge to bring in internet censorship.

And yes, Toews will use Luka as his poster boy for bill C30, unfortunately.

Noone is going to get killed by Luka on his trip home.

And I have served and worked with 5 or 6 hitmen in my time in high end restaurants several mafias. Some came into a restaurant in a western city the one English word they used was "hitman" they were mostly killing recalcitrant prostitutes who were left outside the city boundaries nobody cared. I found them to be like Luka.

With regard to Vic Toews' proposed Internet surveillance bill, the reaction was swift. Someone even started aTwitter feed exposing details of his messy divorce to show him what it's like to have someone pry onto one's personal affairs. He pulled in his horns pretty quick.
