Does anyone have a link to the identified fabrics in that quilt please, I am sure I saw some of the hexagon pieces recreated but can't locate it now.

Edited to add: the SA Police released a further image of the 90cm square quilt along with seven octagonal patches identified by their fabric, featuring musical notes, stars, teddies, a camel, pumpkins, flowers, insects and animals.

I'm also a morning walker & am familiar with everyone in my neighborhood. If I saw an unfamiliar guy lugging around a suitcase, it would stand out.

The impression I got was that it was a collection of clothes a non-custodial parent might have for a child who visits one day/night at a time. The abundance of summer sleepwear and the tutu were bought all at once when the child first started having access visits, maybe was being toilet trained and the caregiver was enthusiastic. The winter clothes were bought later on, when the caregiver was less enthusiastic, maybe the child was by now toilet trained, but the noncustodial parent had to have something on hand to keep the child warm when the child was picked up in clothes suitable for daytime warmth and the temperature quickly dropped in the late afternoon.

Thank you, Snoopdog, :)
so those 2 fabrics on the last column look the same to me, perhaps different sizes but dragonflies and butterflies on a blue background, can anyone verify please?.

Help...lol...I've looked and re-looked ....did someone here post a link to a news interview of the local Lady Jill Roz who stated she saw the man walking (without the suitcase) - I was sure it was on here somewhere. I've tried again to find it on MSM but it seems to have gone ...

It looks quite like the same fabric, one zoomed in and one zoomed further out with the fabric slightly wrinkled, doesn't it?

ETA Does anyone know what the squiggly lines beside the camel are?

Hi, Puggle, I'm sure I read this as well but I can't work out where, either. He was seen twice on one day - early morning then a few hours later - and on another day as well. Three sightings IIRC and at least once without the suitcase.

@ forthelost Thanks for that info. Is there a possibility it could be Leela McDougall? I'm not Australian so don't know too much about this case beyond a cursory search, but she's the right age and went missing along with her mother.

Perhaps our Australian friends can say if police there are known to be looking into that case?

I have reason to be suspicious of at least one of the reported sightings ...... sheesh wish I could find that interview again... thanks though AtaraMalka

Is there an accurate list anywhere of everything in the suitcase? I have seen various photos at times but firstly not sure if there are photos of every item (perhaps some pics have been withheld for some reason) and secondly not sure if I have missed some as they have been released at different times.
I think it would be interesting to see a complete list to try to build a picture of what one would pack and why?
For example what I would pack for my kids when they were younger to go away with me would be different to what I would pack if they were going to nanas. And different if we were going to stay in a hotel, with family or camping.
I once had my 2 year old niece stay with me. She lives in the city and I live out in a more rural area. I had virtually NO use for what was in that bag....it was more like stuff for a nightclub....I had to borrow stuff for her so she could play in the garden and run around with the boys.
My point being......if that suitcase was actually 'packed' for a trip of some sort, the entire contents would give a good indication of what sort of person packed it and where they were going.

Neither am I but I researched this idea for several hours and decided she would likely be too old and tall to match the remains. Jmo but the times would match perfectly as would the lack of a missing child report filed by a parent.

A complete list would be helpful as I too have seen additional photos online that I have not seen posted here or on the linked investigators' site. It can be a bit confusing.

That said, I also looked at it as a purposefully packed suitcase, but posters pointed out that police believe the body was only recently transferred to the bag. Why the bag had clothing befitting the age and gender of the remains initial is unclear. As for the bag, it apparently does not show signs of decomposition while the quilt and clothing do?

Leela was 6 when she and her mother disappeared (Wynarka Angel was said to be between 2-4), and was described as having long brown hair (Angel is believed to have fair hair, and from the mannequin it was significantly shorter than Leela's). Of course it is possible it was cut shorter.... however reports on Leela McDougall didn't mention her height. I just pulled out a tape measure to check the height of Wynarka Angel (90cm), and honeslty, I thought that height would fit a 6 yearold (looking at it next to me looked like it would be a very tall 2 year old).... many Preps and Grade 1s are still tiny wee people!

Hi, I haven't read everything about this case but I have a comment about the quilt.

I believe that this quilt was folded or scrunched up upon itself and stored that way for a very long time. When it was opened up, I think that the fabric stuck to each other as you can see the music note fabric is attached to the second row of hexagons and covers up most of the fabric that makes up those pieces. Additionally, there is transfer of the inside hexagon pieces onto areas along the border where we are sure it should be music note material. Each layer could be carefully separated from the other to be able to identify what fabric lays below to recreate the piece digitally.

Something that may help, I am almost certain that this is an I-Spy quilt that is an alphabetical quilt. The basic 25 hexagon layout would be typical of using a fabric that represents the first letter of the alphabet for each hexagon. For example, the first hex could be fabric that depicts Apples for A, the second could be Balloons for B, Cats for C, etc. The pumpkins and star hexagons line up perfectly for this type of quilt. The other hexagons could be misaligned due to the "stamping" of the image because of the transferring of the degraded material.

BTW-For the extra letter, either the last hex would be split into two sections or a full hexagon would be put in the middle of the bottom border to complete the alphabet.

This is just my opinion, as a quilter who is the daughter of a quilter who was taught how to quilt by my great-grandma starting at about the age of 8.

If there are any locals on here, do you know if the police set up booze blitzes along that road?

not big buses, theres usually a highway patrol crew and the local Karoonda cop cruising around though. Police come from Berri on night shifts.

Some of the fabrics seem fairly old. I remember the Teddy Time print by Nutex from the late '80s or perhaps early 90s, and the pumpkin fabric looks older than that. But it wouldn't be unusual for a quilter to use fabrics from a stash that had been accumulated over a lifetime. I suspect that the more vintage fabrics are the ones which are preserved. They usually were a far better quality than newer quilting fabrics, which sometimes are so thin you can read through them.

It's hard to know how old it is. A quilt left out in the elements can deteriorate fairly fast. I'm sure that much damage could occur within a year ifthe quilt was left in the sun and rain.

Oh yes, just take my word on this. A quilter/crafter/sewer loves their fabric and will keep all of it forever. No matter what.

To me it seems like something organic was wrapped in this quilt because it seems to be decomposing from the top side while the back is fairly intact. If I use the Alphabet I Spy Quilt theory, something must have been inside of it to start the degrading of the fabric from that side and for the stamping effect of the hexagons on opposite sides of the blanket to be touching each other. For instance, I see a faint stamping of the Camel above the Stars. If you put the Camel in the 3rd Hex position, for C, the corner would be folded over a bit to stamp the camel above the Stars hex.
