I find it very unlikely that the defense will challenge the cause of death. The victims were immediately diagnosed as suffering from amanita poisoning. I'm sure there are test results and thorough autopsies. Will the defense claim that the three simultaneously deaths were just coincidence? No jury will believe that.

Just jumping off this part of your post ...

I was interested in seeing if other poisons could resemble amanita poisoning. I didn't see any info to say that.
But it is interesting that there are species of Amanita that are not deadly. That are edible.

Made me wonder if the defence could go for "accidental poisoning". Reasonable doubt.

Asian straw mushrooms and other edible species of Amanita look very similar to death cap mushrooms. Link

It might involve EP changing her story a little, to one where she did forage but was afraid to say so.
Or it might not involve a change of story, and the "Asian shop" accidently sold poisonous Amanita among its edible varieties (if it sells edible varieties, whichever shop that might be).

The first block of pre-trial hearings for Ms Patterson's high-profile murder case concluded in Victoria's Supreme Court on Wednesday after five days of proceedings.

Ms Patterson, 49, appeared in Victoria's Supreme Court via audio-visual link for the pre-trial hearings, which will resume in two months' time on October 14.

Judicial Registrar Tim Freeman made an order for Ms Patterson to be remanded in custody until the case returns in October. She is expected to appear again via audio-visual link.

The further pre-trial hearings in October are expected to run for about two weeks in Victoria's Supreme Court.

Courtroom sketch of accused killer retracted because artist allegedly drew… a tiny mushroom

April 23, 2024.

“Media outlets were told to stop using the original sketch, though a few versions remain online.

It appeared the artist included a tiny mushroom in the bottom-right-hand corner of her courtroom portrait of Patterson.

Crikey understands the sketch was done by the artist for a pool of Australian outlets on the day, and that the ABC was responsible for sending the image out to the pool that day, to be distributed by AAP.”

Must be the Sec 198 hearing. Conducting limited preparatory cross examination(s) before the trial. imo

Deadly mushrooms in the news in Victoria, and making reference to this case….

Warning over deadly mushrooms after 98-year-old woman dies in Victoria

“The tragic death of a woman who unknowingly ingested poisonous mushrooms has prompted renewed warnings about the dangers of foraging.

Melbourne woman Loreta Maria Del Rossi passed away on May 22, 2024, after a fatal bout of multi-organ failure triggered by amatoxins — the deadly compound in “death cap” mushrooms.

The discovery was made in Victorian state coroner Judge John Cain’s findings, released for the first time on Wednesday.“

OK, a 98-year-old woman took a poisonous mushroom for a good one.

Here, 4 people were poisoned, the desiccator was thrown out, prior illnesses of her husband, but the forager didn’t eat mushrooms and is very much alive.

Perhaps the mushrooms in this case were actually picked wild and mistaken for safe ones.

What is happening with this case? Why's it gone so quiet?

I don't rule out that that they were picked, even though she said she bought them.

And yes sometimes people lie even though it might have been better for them to just tell the truth.

The fact that she very carefully didn’t eat them in any significant amount weighs against it.

As a cook, best way was for EP to put tainted mushrooms in 1 gravy boat, Ive suggested this all along.
Evidence easily discarded;
Really simple to flush away the liquid evidence and keep her specialty Beef Wellington "perfect"
Then, make fresh gravy for herself and her kids separated in a different gravy boat.

The dehydrator IMO holds all the clues (and evidence of such I'm sure)

It's still (to me) feasible she could have used the dehydrated hand-picked poison mushrooms to try and make them all unwell - not necessarily "dead".

I'll be very interested to hear the DPP case on EP - as we are all just guessing ATM.
