Australia AUSTRALIA - 4YO AUGUST (GUS) Missing from rural family home in Outback, Yunta, South Australia, 27th Sept 2025

To add to my post...

I forgot to mention
that this outstanding sports event (Grand Final)
broke the usual dull ROUTINE in daily living.

And when known routine is broken
unexpected & unforeseen things might happen.
Sudden disruptions.
Sometimes chaos & disorientation.

JMO
This being a major sporting occasion, it's also likely that beer was drunk.

Australia has multiple time zones.
Did the Grand Final finish at 5pm in Yunta SA?
Has this been confirmed please?

Note that Yunta uses a special half-hour time zone.

What time is the AFL grand final?

Here are the times according to which state or territory you're in:

  • 2.30pm AEST: ACT, NSW, Queensland, Tasmania, Victoria
  • 2pm ACST: Northern Territory, South Australia
  • 12.30pm AWST: Western Australia

Just to be clear, the whole state of SA is ½ an hour behind the Eastern states (not just Yunta).

The footy Grand Final was scheduled to end at 5pm eastern standard time, which is 4:30pm in South Australia. IIRC it did not go into overtime as it was a clear win for the Lions.

Also of note is that neither of the teams playing in the Grand Final was a South Australian team. Our Adelaide Crows almost made it, but didn't.

The 2025 AFL Grand Final will take place on Saturday, 27 September at 2.30pm AEST, and should finish around 5pm, depending on quarter lengths and whether extra time is required.

Thank you so much :)
ETA - That refutes the theory of the siren sounding and/or match finishing at 5pm and being a reference point for the time G'Ma checked on Gus IMO.

I was reading the Daily Mail website article on this case. It seems a reasonable summary of what's happened and the circumstances leading up to the disappearance. Just visiting here to see what my fellow Webslueths think.

I agree with many posts I've seen so far, at this stage I'm also inclined to think Gus is somewhere on the property, in the house, or in one of the outbuildings. I hope he's found, or his body recovered soon. May God Bless and cherish him, wherever he is.

If you were to use the grand final as a feasible distraction for a number of people, the timeline actually makes some sense.

The game itself finished just after 5pm Vic time, which is 4:30 in SA. Then they show the after-match presentations up to the 6pm news in Vic, which is obviously 5:30 in SA. As others have said, the GF is synonymous with drinking beer.

If anyone was watching the GF in that area of the shearing sheds, it may have been quite loud and attracted a young boys interest?

I'm not sure exactly what I'm allowed to say here, but not all offences against kids involve a vehicle. Brett Cowan committed an offence prior to Daniel Morecombe, where he assaulted the boy and placed him in a car that was part of a scrap heap. Thankfully that boy actually survived.

I agree, I have been reading about thermal imaging capability. I am sure if Gus was above ground, hidden by shrub or land undulations he would have been found by now using the thermal SAR drone (which I am assuming is what was used). These drones cannot penetrate buildings or see underground, so there is still a great possibility that he is somewhere in a building, or under the surface somewhere on the property. This is a devastating and protracted search, I feel so much for the family, community and search teams. I hope Gus is found soon and the family can grieve in peace.

The last quarter was pretty hohum and not something that kept you glued to the game, unless you were a Brisbane Lions supporter.

However, after the siren would have been a lot more interesting, particularly at the medal presentations for each player.

That's when our eagle eyes come out to make sure the handshake and cap placement to the auskickers is following protocol 😆

I agree.

It would be just a curious coincidence
that the boy vanished on the day of high spirits (metaphorically & literally - if you know what I mean).

A day so different
than everyday boring routine with regular & predictable activities.

Besides,
I guess the times given by family might have been approximate.

I'm still convinced GFinal mattered.

But,
who really knows? 🤔

This is the track that heads directly west from Oak Park Station, also linking to the Barrier Highway, and this one does not seem to pass that closely by any other homesteads before the highway. It also looks to have a few gates enroute.

Zooming in it looks pretty rough in parts, and more gates. Likely 4wd only but most people out there would be travelling in 4wd anyway.

Having worked on large farms it’s pretty common to drive yourself home after plenty of beers - there’s no taxis or Ubers out there.

So a loose theory <modsnip> - someone is back-tracking home drink driving after watching the grand final and having a few beers with mates at one of the many homesteads along those tracks. Maybe heading for the western track away from town, as I’m sure police in Yunta would be breath testing drivers on grand final day. Gus is wandering on the track not far from home on his little adventure and gets accidentally hit, and then a cover up results. Police have some idea along these lines, maybe even some evidence, and are looking into phone pings etc but keeping it on the downlow while they zero in on their suspect. IMO - pure theory only, and a loose one at that.

<modsnip>
I don't think that's a loose theory at all. That is exactly how I imagine Samantha Murphy disappeared. I hope police have realised that is a definite possibility. With the likelihood of sheep being on the road, no local is going to travel Oak Park Road without a roo bar and so there wouldn't be any damage to a vehicle making it harder to find the culprit if it happened this way. IMO
