Its all part of the package...respect needs to be taught and attitudes need adjustment...<modsnip>...my views on crime and punishment are considered old school but that is how I am...

There will be NO further discussions about a "certain article" in a magazine.

We aren't really discussing JM when we are discussing misogynistic ways of young women, old men and the population in general. .<modsnip> Rape is a crime of dominance not limited to women but everyone is at risk! We are lucky that we do have ways and means of identifying such situation on an individual basis in this society we live in. Yes Jill happened to come across the worst possible menace of man who in society's eyes personified the term rapist but we cannot blindside ourselves by expecting that every rapist will have the same kind of personailty traits. Just because a man or a women is respectful in their language or their demanour does NOT mean that they will be committed to their outwardly voiced opinion. <modsnip> At the very least its a stretch of the imagination!

If thats the case...what is left to discuss until the trial?
We have been been through all the pertinent aspects of the lead up, abduction, the act,the aftermath, investigation etc....until the case is presented what else is there?
I think its relevant for people to want to discuss why this kind of attack happens and what to do about it

A stone memorial to honour Jill Meagher has been removed from the remote roadside where her body was found.
Melton City Council has confirmed it has taken the 50 kilogram granite slab from Black Hill Road, Gisborne South.
Bruce Wood, who attends the site daily as its self-appointed guardian, said he was struggling to understand the council's logic.

I understands peoples need for symbolism and a a place to grieve...but from my knowledge of Gillian,a dark, lonely country road was as far from what she was about as you could get...this was a girl that wanted to go to clown school, made strangers dance to awful music and lit up every room she entered...from what I have read from her friends,if people want to perpetuate her memory...never pass by a chance to show kindness and laugh a lot...thats the way to do it.

That road was also the place chosen by someone else....if people want to remember her...go where there is laughter

Too right Possy, a stonemason donated the stone and the message. Surely that amounts to theft? The memorial stone is similar to the crosses you see on the roadside in memory to a fatality & they have every right to have it there. What reason would the council remove it, maybe too many tourists and the locals didn't like their area associated with the memory or cars stopping creating a road hazard. Got me stumped & who has it now? :what: .

Yesterday Ms Meagher's friends met at the Brunswick Green hotel to mark her 30th birthday. Husband Tom did not go. It is understood that Mr Meagher has travelled home to Ireland. http://www.heraldsun.com.au

Oh I feel such sorrow for Tom & sorry for doubting him. I wonder if he left his job to be with his family back home & maybe he realises what's in store with the court case & needs his family's strength. Both so young to suffer this. Many lives have been affected because of this horror & so so unfair. I wonder if he hates Australia because of what's happened:notgood:
Jill & Tom may have been talking of starting a family.

Without Predjudice here Mods & I'm not saying Paul is wrong 'cause I feel the granite stone is similar to crosses seen along the roadside showing where a loved one died due to a vehicle accident or a gravestone. It's somewhere to go on an anniversary & better than the laneway ! :twocents:

I was talking to someone on facebook that grew up with Gillian and their feeling is that they want to remember how she lived and not how she died...just their perspective on it.

Read the article and you will see that the family were consulted before the stone was moved.

I don't understand the council's objection to a flowering gum being planted on the site, particularly if it's native to the area? I think it's a beautiful yet unobtrusive memorial to her.

Hope Tom is doing OK and has the support he needs. 3 years in a new city is long enough in my experience to establish a good group of mates and make a home for yourself, but will that be enough for him to stay in Melbourne long-term?

AS far as I know he has been in Dublin...he has to face the horror of going into the unit and dealing with Gillians possessions and each one will have a memory attached...many objects will be where she left them...that will be excruciating beyond belief

Premier Ted Baillieu says he is disappointed that a stone memorial erected where Jill Meagher's body was found has been removed from the site north-west of Melbourne.
Melton City Council said it had taken the 50-kilogram granite slab from Black Hill Road in Gisborne South with the permission of Ms Meagher's family.

The article also says:

The stone memorial will be sent to Ms Meagher's parents, who live in Perth.

The roadside crosses in most cases to what I have noticed never stay permantly year after year after year. Eventually they 'disappear'. Though they don't give permission (to what I know), Councils allow them mostly because it serves as a warning to people to be careful driving.

However, I'm not sure about the merits of having a permanent shrine in any location of where a person was murdered or their body found.

How different would it be if a person was murdered or their body found in someone's house or their yard and a memorial shrine erected in that spot.

The decision to remove the monument was discussed withe family and they were fine with it going.
Its important to bear in mind that although the community may feel strongly about the crime and would like a symbol of their grief,Gillian was someones daughter, wife and sister...the place where the memorial is was chosen by her alleged killer and was simply a place where her body was discarded to avoid detection...it was not a place of her or the families choosing...nor as someone tongue in cheek suggested earlier, the alleyway where her bag was found.
Her ashes are where they belong...in Perth with the family...wherever they choose to place them should be the most appropriate site to pay respect.

I have been following this case and numerous threads for weeks now and I have to say.... What an amazing, clever and polite group of people are here. I have more information and understanding from this forum than all of MSM combined. The discovery of the cameras in Hope St was fantastic. I guedd we all wait it out now.... Thos will be a very sad and frustrating few months. This case has terrified me and I find myself thinking of all the ridiculous positions I have put myself in over the years and the amount of times it could have been me :/
