ACTIVE SEARCH Australia. Man wanted after pouring hot coffee on baby in park, Brisbane, Queensland. 27th August 2024

Interesting article about why the perp may have done such a thing.

It seemed his "farewell" to Australia.

I guess
he had a return plane ticket ready.
He couldn't have run quickly enough to the airport.

Who knows how he is reacting now to stressful situations?
I bet he is "sitting as quietly as a mouse"
trying not to draw attention to himself.

Migrant allegedly scalded baby with hot coffee in sickening random attack after visa application was rejected

It is understood that evidence from Queensland Police against the suspect has been provided to Chinese authorities. However, authorities have refused to confirm the move, the publication reports.

All as I pointed out back in November, there are challenges with extraditions and particularly in dealings with China. Explainer: why the government ‘pulled’ Australia’s extradition treaty with China

Additionally the Mutual Assistance Treaty between Australia and China isn't set up this way (explained right up front, in paragraph 4 of the Treaty). Many of you are raising questions about what can/can't be done and you can find the answers to within the text of the agreement. It's written in plain English and is available at www.legislation.gov.au/F2007L00302/asmade/text

You really have to wonder what exactly was the purpose of that treaty.

It is for:

"Australia and China
to assist each other in the investigation and prosecution of serious crimes

including:

- terrorism,
- fraud,
- money laundering,
- people trafficking."

Quote from a post (#437) upthread.

"Almost a year after the ordeal,
Luka's mother confirmed on Tuesday
that her son had undergone eight operations.

'Every procedure is a painful reminder of what was done to him
— and of the justice that still hasn't come'.

'He's received synthetic skin grafts,
skin needling,
and laser treatments for his burns'.

The mother described it as
'beyond unacceptable'
that the perpetrator had not faced the consequences, calling it
'one of the hardest things to endure'.

'To those in positions of power:
please don't make it another year.
Do not let this man escape accountability for hurting a child'.

'Our legal systems and international relationships should protect victims and children,
yet they have failed to do so',
the woman said.

Luka, who will turn two in October,
is continuing his recovery.

His mother said he has a
'strength that continues
to outshine the cruelty he experienced'.

'Despite everything he has endured
and continues to endure,
he is healing with a spirit
that amazes us every single day'."

But is the treaty actually accomplishing those goals? And I am talking about outside of this case. Were there discussions and negotiations about including extradition of criminal defendants as well?

A murder suspect from Canada had fled to Hong Kong last year. One year on, there's still no news of finding him. Let alone extradition.

There is a thread on WS about an Asian woman who allegedly murdered her 2 children and kept them in a suitcase.
It happened in Australia.
She fled to her home country but was successfully extradited to Australia.
But this case went quiet.
Was there a trial?
And I'm not sure where she fled to.
Was it China?
Or Hong Kong?

🤔

It happened some time ago, so my memory is hazy.
But extradition to Australia was successful.

If I remember correctly, it was New Zealand.

Really??? 😲
Oh well...
No wonder extradition was quick!

Thanks! :)
And the woman was extradited from South Korea, not the PRC.

There are extraditions to Australia all the time that meet the legal requirement of the requesting country (Australia) and the other 'sending' country. For example this domestic violence murder case where the husband was extradited from India www.sbs.com.au/news/article/former-nurse-rajwinder-singh-jailed-for-life-over-murder-of-toyah-cordingley/uxiuprymr

In the case of China, they almost never agree to extradite one of their citizens to face trial overseas. I posted information on this upthread a few months ago. Extradition requires both countries to be willing partners. That will be what the ongoing discussions with the Chinese authorities and the Australian Federal Police will be trying to hash out.

The article posted by @Vaderman dates back to August and that news release was discussed a page or two back.

To be fair, he’s probably not doing well in China.
