Just reported on CNN. Many acts of human kindness. Words not verbatim. Muslim woman is riding the train. Reports of this horror. She removes her head wear and exits the train. Another woman follows her and tells her to put it back on and "I will walk with you" Off to find the tissue. Sobbing here.

It started a world wide trend on twitter #iwillridewithyou

Now idiots on twitter calling it a tactical command error. Wait for the official statement from police before criticising their move, they put their own life on the line to rescue the hostages. Something forced their hand as they were prepared to wait it out.

Agree. Something "he"said or something he forced a hostage to put on social media led LE to conclude they were out of time. IMO.

Well, this isn't going to go down well with a significant chunk of the Aussie public ....

Police say they believe the man who seized hostages is Man Haron Monis - an Iranian-born cleric who has been granted asylum in Australia.

I'm catching up .. this whole thing is so upsetting I was sure everyone would get out alive :( His past / our easy going granting of bail to everyone even people on serious charges etc etc etc etc .. people are going to be so angry today!! Horrible.

I also feel so sad for the 2 hostage's families, innocent people caught up in the violent madness of one man. :( :(

Is anyone else confused by the numbers in this presser? What I believe I heard was:

17 hostages total
2 hostages dead
6 uninjured.

That leaves 9 injured, I guess, but that doesn't add up with the press release skibaboo posted, which in itself was confusing as to the number of injured women.

ETA: Maybe in the injured/uninjured he wasn't including the five who escaped earlier. That would leave 12, 2 of them dead, 4 injured, 6 uninjured?

Maybe the others suffered minor injuries treated at the scene and not requiring a hospital visit?

I ran to the shop quickly to get a coffee & on the way heard an interview with his lawyer on ABC radio. Wow is all I can say, he foresaw an incident like this happening due to his current charges & his client felt he had no other option. He then went on to rant at the horrific incidents that happened to his client whilst in custody. Well pray tell why did you not warn the authorities about your client?

Ellmau, I updated my prior post with a possible explanation.
