Australia - Mass shooting at Bondi Beach Hanukkah Celebration - 14 Dec 2025

The New South Wales parliament will be recalled ahead of Christmas next week to consider gun reforms in the wake of the Bondi terror attack.

Premier Chris Minns said among the reforms to be discussed were proposed limits on the number of firearms a licensed shooter could own.

The proposed legislation would also reclassify straight shotguns and prohibit belt-fed ammunition magazines in those weapons.

The legislation would seek to remove the right of shooters to appeal to the NSW Civil and Administrative tribunal when a licence is revoked.

Accelerating the launch of a national firearms register, and making Australian citizenship a condition of a gun licence is also being considered.

Mr Minns said the legislation was now being drafted and would be fast-tracked through parliament, which would sit on December 22 and 23.

"We're looking at reforms whereby, when there's a terrorism designation in the state, the police commissioner may not accept applications for protests on the grounds it will both stretch police resources and, secondly, add to community disharmony and as a result, a combustible situation in the state."

we've got a lot of antisemitism here in Canada too
it could easily have been this country
it's beyond sickening
we have to stand strong together

Yes, I’ve been dismayed at the radicalization of sweet, polite Canada. I’ve been there several times and never did I feel afraid until now.

Thank you for your honesty. It seems that all the countries which exhibited only tolerance have now become cesspools of hatred, particularly in violence against Jews.

ADMIN NOTE:

For members who wish to discuss gun control in general, we have a place for that :)

Members meet every Tuesday evening in Tricia's living room and she will serve pizza, burgers, coffee, tea, colas and home baked cookies.

Okay, that's not true. I made that up :P

To discuss gun control in general, please click HERE.

We've had to close that thread occasionally due to bickering that occurs, but as long as members can post civilly, it can stay open. Don't be "That Person" who ends up getting that thread closed.

In specific individual cases, which includes this current Bondi Beach case, members may of course discuss guns as they relate specifically to this case, i.e. weapon(s) used and how the perp may have acquired them, law only as it pertains to this specific case, etc. but politicizing by discussing the overall issue of gun control is off limits.

In the discussion thread for gun control / gun violence linked above, it is for general discussion but should not include specific cases. (I think that is explained in the Opening Posts.)

Any questions, please use the Report feature to enquire rather than derailing the discussion with off topic convo.

Thanks !!

That footage shows us how obstructive the public who swarmed the bridge were. After the gunmen were shot by police. An extra challenge for the police at a time when they needed cooperation. Get off the bridge, stop contaminating a crime scene.

From about the 4:40 mark in your linked video.

I do understand their raw emotions at such a time, but it was quite a tussle to get them off the bridge.

sending hugs and support to our Jewish & Australian members

Yes. I feel so badly about the spread of antisemitism in our society and apparently around the world. I wish that there was a way to show support. Something tangible. Because I would do it in a heartbeat.

A Bondi local has recalled the moment he “stomped” on a shooter’s head after police brought down two terrorists during a massacre at Bondi Beach on Sunday.

Is there a synagogue in your area? Perhaps you could reach out to them and see if there's anything they need?

Well, I was actually talking to an acquaintance with is Jewish about this. He was not receptive.

It could be just him. But it seems to me that the collective antisemitism, has created a schism. Even people who care are shut out, in an "us against them" mentality.

It makes me sad.

That is terrible if people feel they are forced into isolation because of the minority inflicting fear . The majority respect another's beliefs and creed and are not hostile towards individual race . That's sad 😔

By way of explanation, our beach life savers "paddle out" to show respect, support and condolences.
Paddling out means getting onto your surfboard and paddling out into the water, where you quietly sit together and reflect.

The eastern suburbs witnessed a beautiful morning as hundreds gathered at Bondi Beach to paddle out in memory of the 15 victims lost to violence and to support the Jewish community.
The event serves as a poignant reminder of community strength, where reflections and prayers were shared before surfers prepare to take to the water in honour of the victims.

:( 😡

Islamic State has published an article on the Bondi Jewish festival shooting calling it a “source of pride”, Reuters reports.

The article published on the group’s Telegram channel praised the attack without explicitly claiming responsibility for it, the wire service said.

"The group appeared to take credit for inspiring the attack, rather than for directly orchestrating it or being in contact with the attackers. It referred to the attackers as ‘heroes’ and ‘lions’.

It boasted about the influence of its ideology, narratives and online messaging, claiming that governments are unable to control its reach unless they shut down the internet entirely."
