Thanks Strangeworld … I was just posting this on same topic!

For others who may not understand the ACN/ABN talk … here’s a simplistic interpretation …

ACN would be to separate Morgan’s business interests from his private interests, with regard to Huxley Marine. If Huxley Marine got into financial trouble, they wouldn’t take his private assets to pay Huxley Marine’s debts.

Two ABNs – One as a sole trader under Skip Afloat trading as Huxley Marine, not registered for GST (so current earnings under $75,000 p/a).
The other as a sole trader not registered for GST (again, earnings under $75,000 p/a) and could be for the work he did for other marine companies, or some other type of work (as a contractor, not an employee).

Not a wealthy man
.. one who was plodding steadily along. He could have slipped the odd cash job through IMO, as long as he put enough through the books to satisfy the ATO that he earned/had sufficient money to live whatever lifestyle he lived (if they audited him).

We have no way of knowing this.

All we know is 2 ABNs are not registered for GST, in his name.

You can call yourself absolutely anything when you register for an ABN. He could easily have had his own business registered as something entirely different, under something more professional, or even a family trust type arrangement.

We cannot say he has no other ABNs, these things are often unclear. He could have several.

Well at least he was trying to do the right thing etc .. and making a go of it. Poor guy.

  • Despite their similarities, the ABN and ACN are intrinsically different. ABN is an acronym of Australian Business number while ACN is used as an acronym of Australian Company Number. An ABN can be issued to all business types including sole trader and partnership registrations, but an ACN can only be assigned to a business that registers as a company
  • An ACN is issued by the Australian Securities and Investment Commission (ASIC) when a business completes a company registration. The Australian Tax Office is responsible for the issue of an ABN[/B]
  • Once a company has been issued with an ACN through the Australian Securities and Investment Commission (ASIC), they are under no further obligation to obtain an additional ABN. The ACN will suffice for all trading purposes. However, due to the various benefits of having an ABN, most Australian companies secure an ABN.

http://abn.com.au/difference-between-an-abn-and-an-acn/

Morgan was registered as a business (ABN) but because his company was not registered with ASIC, he didn't need an ACN.

Sorry to be pedantic, but he was no Fly By Night cash tax defrauder. He was properly registered as a sole trader. Sole traders do not qualify for, nor require ACNs.

He has an ACN.

Another thought - if he was considering employing staff (like maybe he was wanting larger contracts, increase workflow, etc) he may choose to get an ACN. I think there is a cap on the number of employees a person using an ABN can employ before they need to get an ACN.

I think there are a number of reasons why he would get an ACN.

How many units on each side of MH ? - this is where I was heading when I wrote could it have been someone who did not have far to go after the crime.

Is there an empty unit, or some storage place close by where someone could have gone in to quickly get changed, perhaps even dispose of the weapon, as it seems to have been small enough to push through some gap, knowing that the police would be looking for something outside/bushes,

Does anyone know if all/most of his customers were Sydney based

Company = registered business incorporated with shares and a BOD, on the stock exchange, prone to ASIC scrutiny

Business = registered business for those who don't wish to go public and sell up shares to the public on the stock exchange.

Morgans businesses were properly registered as sole proprietor trading as.

Sole traders cannot get an ACN.

SapphireSteel, you're missing the point. The stock exchange often has nothing to do with someone getting an ACN. The ACN has many other benefits (and requirements) for a sole trader to obtain, totally unique to any focus on public listing.

One of the suspects didn't have far to go to a safe place (family home) .. only a 3 minute drive/12 minute walk/6 minute run through the back streets.

Were suspects named??????

Sorry .. edited post to correct

No sleuthing of friends, only named suspects. We all know the rules and if we don't let's brush up on them.

Thanks

I guess we may be a bit confused ... are the named girlfriends considered suspects? The person I mentioned with the family home close by is a named girlfriend (RP). We have been speaking of her a lot.

TIA

It is abit confusing, JO told the police that she suspected or was certain that a female did it, the police redirected to a possible 'scorned lover', in light of the whole situation, JO should not have made any such comments if she did not have any solid proof? or did she & we do not know about it yet

If that was said, and it was her own opinion then that could have simply caused an enormous negative impact on some of these women, gf,ex's, ff re their work, families, not to mention the personal emotional drama, until the person is caught,

Hence, if JO has based this on feelings alone, and it turns out to be a male or someone who was never romantically involved with MH,

then perhaps the media should change what they print in re to crime comments, especially if no proof backs up a story which could have been said simply out of anger/spite or for whatever reason

No. They are not suspects unless you can provide me with a link that states that LE has named them as suspects. Do not engage in speculation about people who just happened to know this man.

You can speculate without giving specifics such as "maybe one of his friends may have..........." but you cannot specifically identify a person who has not been named nor can you encourage people to speculate about a person just because the victim knew them.

His friends can give any opinions they please to LE and you can discuss what the friend has stated. You can discuss whatever is discussed in the article. It's just against TOS to single someone out, sleuth them when nothing has been stated in MSN or LE that this person is a suspect. If it's being reported in the news as a rumor it just won't fly here.
