Standing up it may be easier to miss something very small, like a fragment of skin or a tooth.

I've seen photos from other searches where they've been sitting down and using sieves.

I'm sure they know what they're doing.

This is going to sound horrific, so my apologies. But given the loads were compressed, wouldn't everything be together?

The Australian Defence Force has been called in to help search a waste facility for the body of a missing retired Brisbane teacher, who police believe was dumped in a wheelie bin.

Police have given search crews photographs of the clothes they believe Lesley Trotter, 78, was wearing when she was last seen at her Toowong home.

Detective Superintendent Andrew Massingham said authorities were using technology to sift through about 3000 tonnes of general waste at the Swanbank waste facility south-west of Brisbane.

“We have distributed to the team today photographs of the clothing Ms Trotter was last seen wearing, and indeed, the clothes we believe she was wearing when seen in that general waste bin outside her unit complex,” he said.

“We do have a procedure in which we intend to do this,” Massingham said, adding authorities hoped to search about 200 tonnes a day.

“The waste will be exhumed from the ground. It will then be tipped into lanes approximately 30 centimetres deep, at which time our police and ADF personnel will sift through by hand and using rakes.

Today’s Courier Mail article
‘Tough going’: Search for Lesley Trotter body moves to landfill siteView attachment 415384

Police have started the meticulous search for the body of Lesley Trotter through piles of rubbish at a Swanbank dump.
Multiple officers moved into the Ipswich site on Tuesday after a week of planning to narrow down tonnes of landfill where the 78-year-old’s body is suspected to be.
Police have “strong evidence” the Toowong woman’s body was in a wheelie bin near her unit when it was collected by a rubbish truck on March 28.
Multiple officers dressed in hi-vis vests, masks, and long clothing worked through piles of landfill with poles on Tuesday morning.
Police had spread out multiple piles of landfill which were marked out with traffic cones.
Poor Lesley, but also poor police officers. What a hideous work. Hopefully it will be successful at least.

Det Supt Massingham said teams would be able to comb through about 200 tonnes of rubbish a day, weather permitting, and the search would take about two to three weeks.

"This is very much a hand-and-eye type search, using rakes and indiscriminate-type equipment to sort through the general waste," he said.

Searchers clad in personal protective equipment will need to be decontaminated at the end of each shift and air quality will be monitored during the search.

I wonder what else unrelated to this case they find searching through so much rubbish.

What an awful task.

Police have begun sifting through 3,000 tonnes of waste in search of missing Toowong woman Lesley Trotter, who is believed to have been dumped in a bin outside her home last month.

Multiple police units have been joined by Australian Defence Force personnel at the Swanbank Renewable Energy and Waste Management Facility, west of Brisbane, to look for the body of the 78-year-old.

Does that sound that someone did see her on the actual Morning of her disappearance - to have a idea what she was wearing? MOO

It does to me

Do you think she may have had her back pack with her? - Seems odd to have that but not her phone/or keys/money. Do you think the back pack is also missing?? Unless the person responsible - went back to the unit and placed those items and left it unlocked - to make it look that she was nearby?? MOO

Maybe she used the backpack while she was sorting through the bins.
A neighbour did say they put stuff aside so it was easier for her to get from the recycle bins.

Yeah that makes sense that she might have her backpack with her to collect stuff and put it in her backpack - especially if people had regularly left items aside for her. She probably thought she would be away from her apartment for only about 10 minutes tops.MOO

A link that I posted earlier, where a criminologist was speaking, said that they might also use ground penetrating radar to help them in the search. But the success of the search means they must do the hard yard (searching by hand).

I am glad to hear that multiple police units and the ADF are helping. The sooner they find Lesley, the better for any evidence that she may have on her.

I would say they are comparing what people last saw her wearing, to the images seen inside the garbage bin, to come up with at least the colours of what she was wearing....

“We have distributed to the team today photographs of the clothing Ms Trotter was last seen wearing, and indeed, the clothes we believe she was wearing when seen in that general waste bin outside her unit complex,” he said.

“That has been given to investigators today to help with the search."

It’s possible. Also the truck footage theory makes sense too.

The other thing that stuck me is that her backpack is very worn. Her apartment seems to be a miss match of collected furniture. She has lots of outdoor style furniture inside. Coupled with her habit of recycling, I think it’s possible that she didn’t have a lot of clothing so it might be possible for those close to her to identify which of the items she wore frequently were missing?

Oh Tootsie, looking at the video, I can almost smell the tip face... those poor people who are searching the site. The video makes it all so real.

But what do they mean by ”When seen in that general waste bin outside her unit complex”
They make it sound like a person actually saw her body in the bin, maybe before it was emptied?

Unless they do have CCTV and saw her outside but alive on that night or morning.
