Ya know what? Lock me up then, because so am I! We (Western society) treat Muslims like garbage in the streets and then we are shocked and shaken when someone who hears voices is triggered by that treatment. Maybe if we stopped assuming every brown person is connected to terrorism, Muslims wouldn't feel so ostracized and abused? An Indian friend of mine from Chicago gets harassed everywhere he freaking goes because Western society is so ignorant about Muslims.
I think that is what makes many of us Aussies so angry. We do not treat Muslims badly, we are accepting of the religion, we are accepting of everyone ... truly. (Of course, there is always the odd person here and there who does not fall into this generalisation.)
We do not (generally) like burquas because, to many of us, these signify the domination of women. And who doesn't like to see another human's face?
So, it hurts when we open our doors to everyone - while remaining within our refugee intake obligations - and someone turns on our society like this.
You will note that most/all of the Aussies on this thread are not blaming the Muslim religion for this incident.
