GUILTY Australia - One dead, 18 injured by car, Flinders St, Melbourne, 21 Dec 2017 *Arrest*

Ya know what? Lock me up then, because so am I! We (Western society) treat Muslims like garbage in the streets and then we are shocked and shaken when someone who hears voices is triggered by that treatment. Maybe if we stopped assuming every brown person is connected to terrorism, Muslims wouldn't feel so ostracized and abused? An Indian friend of mine from Chicago gets harassed everywhere he freaking goes because Western society is so ignorant about Muslims.

I think that is what makes many of us Aussies so angry. We do not treat Muslims badly, we are accepting of the religion, we are accepting of everyone ... truly. (Of course, there is always the odd person here and there who does not fall into this generalisation.)

We do not (generally) like burquas because, to many of us, these signify the domination of women. And who doesn't like to see another human's face?

So, it hurts when we open our doors to everyone - while remaining within our refugee intake obligations - and someone turns on our society like this.

You will note that most/all of the Aussies on this thread are not blaming the Muslim religion for this incident.

Yup. Very much against booze & strip clubs too which is why it must have been a case of mistaken identity with the 911 terrorists ;)

Then they are not true practising Muslims, are they? They proved to be radicalised deviants.

And Catholic priests have a liking for young kiddies... not sure what these comments about being muslim and taking drugs/frequenting gays bars have got to do with it. Perhaps have a read of the report on the Royal Commission on the Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse (I can pick on Catholics because I was raised one and attended a convent school for 12 years... and survived!). There are many devout Christians who do things which are against their religious beliefs - a recent US politician comes to mind who was very out-spoken in his anti-gay commentary who was caught having sex with a male in his office. I think taking drugs is the least of his sins against his religion given what he has just done on Flinders Street.

BBM I think the taking of drugs - methamphetamine - may have gone a long way toward this horrific act of violence, his hearing of voices (if that is factual, and not just another pathetic excuse), his mental health, his very unbalanced actions against a society that only tried to help him and offer him safety from the Taliban.

His mother insinuated it had been 3 years of this type of drug taking. Probably even longer, considering a mother doesn't always clue in immediately on what is going on with their adult children when they do not live at home.

There is a difference between mentally ill & mentally disordered.

IMO this guy probably was mentally disordered in the legal sense, due to his illicit drug useage & non-compliance with treatment orders ( not taking prescribed meds etc )

He chose his path, now his actions will have consequences........

I'm also sick of the mental health card being thrown around so easily as an excuse for peoples horrendous behaviour & actions. Because you have a "mental illness" does not automatically mean you don't know right from wrong!

Thinking of all the victims of this horrendous crime.......

This simply isn't something we ever ask when a white drug user commits violence. This post is an example of racism.

--

ETA: None of this is at all to say I excuse the violence, before anyone goes ahead and says that garbage.

Why is this post racist? Where was he getting the money for these drugs considering he was a father of 1+1/2 children?
I would ask the same question for anyone.
Isn't that an expensive habit....for anyone.
I still feel for his wife and family......

I don't think the post is racist at all. Our levels of racism in Australia are minimal. I know that you would ask this question of anyone, no matter their race, colour, or creed. :)

Regardless of his place of birth and immigration status, this man is a ‘terrorist’ in that he’s a violent criminal who terrorised my countrymen and women. He is nothing special and is no longer someone to be feared. He will be jailed/committed (and then deported) just like those who came before him and his name will soon be forgotten as we go about our daily lives.

I totally agree with you, Bo. Bless you. x

Dylan Roof was 'mentally ill' too. I will never give a pass to any of these terrorists.

Sounds as though he was living in his public housing unit under false pretences.
His father moved into the brand new unit - 6 weeks later he moved out, and Noori moved in.

“When the unit was first built, it was occupied by a 72-year-old man from Afghanistan who we knew only as Noori,” he said.

“After about six weeks, he said he had to go and that his son would be living there.
“I didn’t see him again after that … A day later, Saeed turns up with a wife and child.”

On a particularly hot day, Mr Noori had asked around about getting air conditioning installed in the property, the neighbour said.
“He told me he couldn’t ring up the housing commission about it because he was not supposed to be there,” he said.

Two men are still fighting for their lives after a car ploughed into pedestrians in Melbourne's CBD last week............

An 83-year-old Brunswick man and two South Korean men in their 60s were initially listed as critical but one has since improved, police confirmed on Tuesday.

Eleven victims have been discharged while another eight remain in hospital, including the two men in a critical condition, Victoria Police spokeswoman Creina O'Grady said.

The motorist accused of mowing down pedestrians in Melbourne's CBD days before Christmas has appeared in court behind security glass.

Saeed Noori, an Afghan refugee and Australian citizen with a history of drug and mental health problems, appeared in Melbourne Magistrates' Court on Wednesday seated between two prison guards.

The 32-year-old is charged with 18 counts of attempted murder and one of conduct endangering life.

Prosecutors asked for longer than usual to serve a brief of evidence on the defence, which will include CCTV footage.

Noori's lawyer Tass Antos said his client's mental impairment and fitness to plea will be considered in his case.

Noori was remanded in custody until his committal mention on May 30.

BOXING Day shoppers yesterday came face-to-face with a stark new festive season *reality: Fortress Sydney — and the anti-terror measures may become permanent.

Four trucks, two cranes and more than 60 bollards built a ring of steel, cement and plastic around the city’s heart, blocking off Market, George, Elizabeth and Castlereagh streets.

As record crowds descended for the traditional sales, shoppers said the *unprecedented security made them feel safer in the wake of the horrific Flinders St attack in Melbourne

“You’ve only got to look at what’s happened internationally and even down in Melbourne to know people are vulnerable and we need to do what we can, within reason, to make them safe in these areas.”

It’s interesting one witness says he arrived before the police and there was 3 people in the car. That could have been the off duty policeman who jumped in the passengers side and held the driver.

ALSO - say the driver sped up before hitting the pedestrians-
Lawyer Sam Dempster was walking along Flinders St outside Fitness First when he saw the driver speed up, hit pedestrians and heard "shocking sounds" as they landed.

"I saw the car driving down Flinders St and it sped up. I looked up and it just mowed through all these people,'' he said.

Lachlan said the apparent driver, dressed in blue jeans and a white T-shirt, appeared to be unconscious.

I was there before the police arrived.

"When I arrived it looked there were two or three people in the car."

Macquarie Radio reporter Stefanie Waclawik tells Chris Kenny the accused showed no emotion in court.

“The magistrate acknowledged he may be withdrawing from drugs. He urged Mr Noori to accept treatment and he recommended psychiatric staff assess him as soon as possible.”

Psychiatrist Dr Tanveer Ahmed joined Chris to explain Noori’s potential motivations.

“This guy may very well have been paranoid.

“The final action had strong Islamist flavours. It was clearly inspired by past vehicle attacks.”

Noori faces his next court appearance on May 30.

The harrowing attacks in Melbourne’s Flinders Street have left many wondering what was to blame; faith or mental illness?

Former Prime Minister Tony Abbott speaks with Chris Kenny on why more accountability needs to put on Islamic authorities.

“The perpetrator has claimed that it was in some way because of alleged discrimination of Muslims in this county.

“No one is discriminated against in this country.

“It’s absolutely incumbent on people who come to this country… not to abuse our hospitality.

“I think it’s just appalling that someone who came to this country as a refugee should’ve done something so terrible.

“There is a problem within in Islam… I think it’s incumbent on all Islamic authority figures to say that it’s never right to kill in the name of God

Redesign our cities.....
This is what we need to do to protects ourselves?
What? Redesign cars with a bumper to deflect humans or wear a suit like the Michelin Man?

We need to change how we design cities

Dr Pernille Christensen, a senior lecturer at UTS, is conducting research into the role that built environment plays in protecting crowded places.

Chicanes, steep verges, bollards, decorative planters, bus shelters, signs, statues, water features, and high kerbs are all examples of design features that can be used to slow down an oncoming vehicle or absorb impact so a human is not the first thing it hits.
