Ah ha!! Now I get it. ha ha.Nope, not even close. I really mean (OK I'll come out and say it) if noone else at all heard it, how do we know that Friend and Wife aren't making it up? JMO, MOO, and all that.

.... did anyone apart from RA and RH hear Russell's last radio call?
... but any ham radio operator anywhere who tuned in to that frequency would have been able to hear the call
And providing they were so inclined to do so, be able to figure out exactly where the broadcast was being transmitted from..
Only if Russell stated exactly where he was at that time ... which I think he must have, seeing that they said he was at Wonnangatta Station.
When I was outback travelling with my ham radio friend last year (he had a portable ham radio with him), I would be driving along and he would be tuning into conversations. There was no way of knowing where the people were who were speaking, just that they were within range of the relay station.
The range can be a huge one, depending on their antenna and equipment. He can listen to people from all over the world, when he is on his home ham radio setup.
All they do is identify themselves by call sign. Then there is a website that you can go to, to see who the call sign is registered to (then you can see whereabouts they live).
But if they were into Fox Hunting and had the know-how then they could find them even if RH didn’t identify themselves. But I get your point, RH did apparently send his transmission from Won. But it varies between news reports as to whether he transmitted from ‘Wonnangatta Station’ or the ‘Wonnangatta Valley’. Some are saying Station, and that he then moved on to his eventual campsite, but I think it’s more likely to just be the Won Valley and that he was already at his intended campsite.
There is infinite info online about how to triangulate radio transmissions.I don't get what you mean by 'the know how'. How does a person trace a radio signal?
It is not like a digital mobile phone signal that is captured and stored on a tower, it is just a radio wave through the air that is magnified for a while by an area radio antenna/relay station and is not captured or stored.
They may know that Russell was at Wonnangatta Station because perhaps that is where ham radio operators can do a radio transmission. In an area as remote as that, I doubt that people can just transmit from anywhere.
This became apparent to me when I was travelling with my friend. There are loads of places where you can't get anything but a crackly sound. You have to be near a radio wave relay station.
This has been bugging me, and I can’t find it being addressed anywhere (sorry if it has been!) but can someone explain the following pic for me, please? I’ve seen this a couple of times now in Ch9 articles.
Is this *THE* white dual cab ute they’re looking for? Where did this pic come from? And if it is, then it’s absolute rubbish that the police don’t know who was driving it.
And for those who know the area, these guys are camped just up from the old suspension bridge that is spike anchored to that huge old dead tree. Last year when this all happened, I was told that RH & CC were camped in the small clearing on the right, just down dry creek track, but according to the caption of this pic, ch9 seem to think they were camped here. But that doesn’t seem to make sense, and why are they using this pic? Can anyone pinpoint on a map for me where you believe, or better still know, where RH’s camp was set up please?

I’m not sure in this instance how knowing where they made the radio call from specifically, makes them an easier target for someone listening in, if that’s what’s being implied.
They were hours from anywhere, they’d be long gone by the time the person got to the spot. Unless they were in Won too, but then wouldn’t a pair of binoculars looking for his Ute be more efficient.
And also I can’t imagine RH kept it a secret (for safety reasons) where he was going so waiting for the call wouldn’t be advantageous.
I thought what RA was implying about it not being safe is that there’s Rambo hunter on the loose. And I took from that, he doesn’t think it was an accident. Because surely if it was an accident they’d be a thousand times more careful that it doesn’t happen again.
