I've been reading about defamation and damages. There is a cap on the maximum that can be awarded for non-economic loss. The cap started at $250,000 in 2005 and had increased through indexation to $381,000 in 2016. Maximum only payable for really serious defamation. This can be exceeded if the court decides the circumstances warrant an award of "aggravated damages" (for example if the publication refuses to correct an error or apologise).
