When you're out searching for hours on a cold, dark night, I can tell you some pretty graphic visions of what you're likely to find fly through your mind. So when the little guy is found alive and without any obvious physical injuries, the relief is so huge that you do tend to be grateful, rather than fuss over what could have been. So no, it's not tough-minded, IMO. I certainly do not minimise the terrible fright and misery he must have gone through while he was lost. But to find that he was unharmed after envisioning the terrible harm he could've come to was just a blessed relief.

  • #1,222
Quite a few people came up to me after the search and said they could never have joined us in looking for a small child, because of their fear of what they may find. I understand that fear, and I looked it in the face and did it anyway. If that makes me tough-minded, I am proud to wear that label.

  • #1,223
Also note that my mention of TK being 'unharmed' was in consideration of the theory that had an abduction taken place, it would be unusual for the child to be returned without injuries. It would be quite a rare thing to find they'd been in the company of a malicious person then released with no signs of physical injury. That's not me minimising psychological injury, of course.

I appreciate that you've contributed to finding Tyler alive and that if the community hadn't stepped in, he likely wouldn't have been. I thought the demurral on the subject of "unharmed" was worth making. I'm currently holding the crown for most insensitive comment on the week, so hardly in a position to rebuke you. It's terrific to hear your observations.

Agreed. It was worth clarifying what I meant. Tone is always ambiguous on text-based forums, which is a pity.

With the exception of ‘emotion-based incidents/offences/crimes’, due to William’s foster and biological parents having been cleared in the investigation into his disappearance, the following excerpt may give some general insight into investigations of the abductions of children of William’s age:

’Investigating Potential Child Abduction Cases

Preschool Children (3 to 5 years)

When compared to cases involving toddler victims, emotion-based offenses are less common in preschool children. Sexual crimes, however, occur more frequently. Toddlers, whose increased mobility and desire for independence make them more difficult to control, may cause their caregivers increased stress and frustration.[16]*

Preschoolers, on the other hand, are often more physically and emotionally developed. This generally reduces dependence and pressure on parents and primary caregivers, decreasing the number of parental emotion-based incidents. Along with their physical and emotional development, however, preschoolers exhibit greater autonomy and experience more prolonged lapses in adult supervision. For example, parents often allow preschoolers to play in their front yards with minimal supervision, providing strangers and acquaintances greater access to these children. Increased ease of access, greater physical maturity, and inherent vulnerability may account for the increase in sexual and profit crimes involving preschool victims as compared to toddlers. Not surprisingly, strangers and acquaintances are often the perpetrators of sexually motivated and profit-based offenses in preschool children.

For preschoolers, emotion-based crimes are predominately familial with biological parents (primarily fathers) and parental boyfriends/girlfriends commonly responsible for these offenses. Offenders are most often males and their victims primarily female, which differs from the slightly higher male victim population in the infant and toddler groups. In cases where offenders kill victims, approximately one-half dispose of the body within 100 yards of the abduction site (almost always the victim and offender's shared residence). However, some offenders who kill their victim transport the remains greater distances, attempting to separate themselves in time and space from the abduction site.

Sexually motivated abductions, while more common than in toddlers, occur less frequently in preschoolers than emotion-based crimes. When they occur, however, females are usually victims. The race of both the victim and the offender closely matches the demographics of the area where the abduction takes place. Usually, offenders are male and an acquaintance of the victim (commonly neighbours). This represents a drastic departure from the large number of family offenders found in emotion-based preschool cases. Again, the accessibility of the victim appears to be a critical factor in dictating victim-offender relationship.

Preschoolers who are victimized by sexually motivated offenders are often abducted from their yards or neighborhoods by offenders who know them and who have ready access to these locations. These offenders often have a history of previous sexual misconduct. Some of these offenders desire children as their preferred sexual partners (preferential offenders) while others are simply sexually indiscriminate (situational offenders). Almost all sexual abductions of preschoolers occur at or within 1 mile from the victim's home.

Profit-based offenses (e.g., ransom, extortion, robbery, drug related) involving preschool victims are rare. Stereotypical incidents involving young children kidnapped for ransom are especially rare (less than 1 percent).[17]* In preschoolers, profit-based abductions generally occur in the context of crimes against older victims, where the abducted preschooler is taken because of a pre-existing parental drug debt or in the course of a carjacking or robbery. A thorough investigation of friends, associates, and subordinates of the child's parents often provides valuable insights into the origins of these crimes.’

But William has not been found, so how would anyone know if his abduction was based on sexual motives?

good point, but statistically it would seem so...

quote from Bohemian's paper -

"When compared to cases involving toddler victims, emotion-based offenses are less common in preschool children. Sexual crimes, however, occur more frequently."

Yes, I understand that sexual crimes may be more common, but not that lead to death. Emotion based crimes are more likely to lead to death.

I wonder how many sexual based crimes lead on to emotion based crimes, that lead then to death. It's a difficult subject... wish we knew more about what happened to little william :( :(

it's not unfeasible that someone who acted on a sexual impulse, then gets emotional in how they deal with their crime - what to do now? The best way to hide it, is to unfortunately, get rid of the evidence, which may include the victim (very depressing thought - so sorry!)

Yes, I agree.

This all brings me back to little Tyler. No-one seriously knows what happened to him - so all speculation - MOO - & suggested by others here. One on WS who was searching hadn't thought about it previously (possible abduction & return)

& the lack of police presence at that 300 metre mark... or, all night, one could surmise, except for one cop that let searchers continue on... speculation but it sounds like there wasn't much police presence around the perimeters late at night (he was found at 1.30am)...

The only cop was stationed at the back of the large mechanical workshop shed, which is quite a distance away. I will try to contact TK's parents and find out whether they've suspected foul play in that incident.

incredibly hard... the thoughts that go through my mind (and ours) sometimes are not worth articulating. Geez, i hope neither parents of WT or T read that... so sorry & pure speculation just by me. It is an emotional forum afterall, not for the faint hearted... i do apologise

Urmmm hell yes it is hard but you have articulated your thoughts well, honestly and consideration. No apologies needed

Hi Frogwell,
Locals generally think it was an out of towner who took WT. Or at least not someone living in Kendall. Most of the people I know think that this person may have strong connections to the area though, as GJ has said. When GJ was brought into the case, I immediately saw a strong reason why they selected him to lead it. Think about what he's famous for - particularly on the mid-north coast. He's the hero of the small screen. The 'types' of folks he's successfully brought to justice have strong connections to people around WT.

BBM
Thank you CaptainPeacock. That is what I have always believed. It was no coincidence that GJ was put on this case Sorry Makara, I know we argued that many times - happy to have that argument again if you come back?? :-)
Oh and welcome CP. Your input is most valuable.

But those types of folks are not represented in the type of investigative team that has been compiled to form Strikeforce Rosann. MOO
