Prosecutors asked John Turney if his relationship changed with Alissa before her disappearance. He said no he was just as close with her. He said they did have an aunt in CA (she has since passed away) but he was the closest in the family to her. John says he has never heard from Alissa since she disappeared in May 2001.

During cross examination, defense attorneys work to show that parenting two girls was difficult and something Michael had not done before.

Day 3 in AZ v Turney is underway w/the victim’s brother on the stand. Keep in mind we are on pacific time so 3 hrs later than EST…judge begins court at 10:30a about an hour later than some trials, & there is a court mandated 30 min delay on live-streaming. Airing now on @CourtTV

John Turney says when his little sister vanished, none of her friends knew anything about where she was. On cross he said their stepfather adopted them and worked hard to make them happy as a blended family. Here’s John headed in to testify.

ABC15 Phoenix reporter @ashleyvholden has also been in the courtroom and following this case. Great to meet journalists from our @EWScrippsCo sister stations all over the country. #MissingSisterMurderTrial #AZvTurney

Day 3, July 11, 2023 recap

Prosecutors asked John Turney if his relationship changed with Alissa before her disappearance. He said no he was just as close with her. He said they did have an aunt in CA (she has since passed away) but he was the closest in the family to her. John says he has never heard from Alissa since she disappeared in May 2001.

During cross examination, defense attorneys work to show that parenting two girls was difficult and something Michael had not done before.

Catching up…cross examination focused on would Alissa know how to get out of the house without being seen. Remember we have seen footage taken from inside and outside the family’s home, but apparently the day of Alissa’s disappearance there are no tapes. Defense attorneys also focused questioning on the efforts they say Michael went to to search for Alissa.

John Turney said that information on Alissa’s search and the efforts to find her were coming from other people including Michael.

Defense attorneys are continually trying to prove Alissa wanted her own freedom. Prosecutors on redirect asked John if Alissa seemed to want freedom from him he said no.

James Turney Alissa’s stepbrother also testifying today, saying his dad (Micheal) told him at one point that Alissa was killed by two electrical workers. He says he didn’t find out until the police raided the house that Michael picked Alissa up early from school the day she disappeared.

He claims Michael told him about an alleged phone call from Alissa (a pay phone in California). We have heard this claim before. He says Michael told him all he heard was static thought and Michael asked if it was Alissa.

Day 3, July 11, 2023 Reporter's recap of trial

The next witness for the state is a classmate of Alissa (Jessica Lang) who saw her on the day she disappeared. Jessica says there was a party they talked about, and she was hopeful Alissa and her boyfriend John could come.

Jessica also said that Michael had told her he would be organizing a search party. But Jessica reached back out when she didn’t hear from him and says he “dismissed” her.

The state called one other witness a coworker of Alissa’s. He says he was at her home once and at one point did make out with her. After that he never saw Alissa again. He quit work shortly after due to health issues. His direct and cross-examination did not last long. That was the last witness of the day and court wrapped early around 2:30.
