"Family of Jhessye Shockley suspicious that missing girl's mom had something to do with disappearance"

Part of the article reads, "Brenda Hunter, Jerice's aunt, says she believes Jerice might have had something to do with Jhessye's disappearance."
It goes on to say, "The family tells ABC15 Jerice hasn't answered her door or their phone calls for two weeks."

There is also an accompanying video.

I feel so bad for the family members that are being turned away by Jerice, but I am proud of them for speaking up for Jhessye. May God bless them, comfort them and give them the answers they are seeking about precious little Jhessye.

Here's another one of those awful missing child cases where a lot of people close to the investigation feel strongly that the parent has harmed her child. There doesn't seem to be a lot of room for doubt anymore...IMHO. JH's own family members are suspicious and they are definitely not supportive, her behavior is screaming out that she's guilty of something, and CPS has stepped in and taken the new baby because they felt it was necessary.
It appears that LE was looking for a body versus a living child before most people wanted to accept that possibility.

This all bad for Jhessye.

We are not going to get one of those happy endings we all hope for, and it appears that other family members have accepted that as well. I get the feeling that the majority of JH's family knew right from the start that JH might have harmed Jhessye, and that she hadn't been abducted. It has to be so hard for them.

It's another sad, heartbreaking case. Jhessye's sweet little face just haunts me.

Please let there be a break in this case. I woke up again this am thinking of Jahessye, Lisa Irwin and NOW...Skye. *sigh* I avoided that thread until today. Where for the love of God.....are these children?

this AP article would seem to indicate that the handing over of the children to Jerice was not exactly through official channels but more of a casual arrangement between she and her mother. This further bolsters our theory that the siblings and the new baby were removed because Jerice was never authorized to have them to begin with. It also seems to bolster our thoughts that Jhessye may not even have been monitored by any CPS (CA or AZ) due to the fact that she was still in utuero at the time of Jerice's sentencing. I strongly believe that the care of Jhessye being given to the cousins while mom was incarcerated was a private arrangement made between Jerice and the cousins.

Therefor - when Jerice got out of jail and showed up demanding her daughter, there was no case or file or reason, to the eyes of LE, that she should not be turned over to her biological mother. I feel so badly for the cousins who seemed to genuinely love Jhessye and wanted to keep her safe. They had no legal leg to stand on at that time. That is my belief.

Hunter was charged with torturing one child and two counts of child abuse. She took a plea of no contest and was sentenced to 8 years. She served 4 years, this was in California. When she was released, her mother returned custody of the children to Hunter. She then moved to Glendale and took Jhessye from the 4 cousins who had raised her.

Initially, I suspected the mom. Then when I heard the 911 call, I was on the fence, because she seemed genuine. Now I'm definitely with the family on this.

Everyone grieves differently, so regardless of how I feel, I can't judge her for how she's acting. But there's no excuse for her not taking a lie detector test. She's not pregnant anymore, so what is she hiding?? And did they ever check the landfill? How do they know 100% that nothing is in there? :maddening:

Why the change of opinion, reporter asks the family-

"Because she refuses to take the lie detector test. Even if she whipped her and hit her too hard and just didn't realize it, and uh, didn't want to admit it. But it's ok to let us know what you did".

They are also questioning why Jerice isn't out helping with the search. They feel she is not behaving like a Mother would being that her child is missing. Jerice will not speak with any of them.

This family is heartbroken and looking for answers to Jhessye's disappearance. My heart aches for them.

I hate to say it, but I think it is time to begin searching that area they've cordonned off and marked at the landfill. :(

tlcox maybe you're right. I have only seen Jerice get out of a car that wasn't a cab one time. Her Father gave her a ride to the CPS hearing last week. If she seemingly has no one to give her a ride and uses a cab for transportation, how could she have removed J from the apartment?

Have you noticed she seems to have no friends? Only neighbors and relatives. Oh wait I forgot about the *mystery baby-Daddy* who no one seems to want to talk about.

BBM. This is almost too gruesome to contemplate, but my mind thought of the landfill. How much does a five year old weigh? Could one fit into a large trash bag?

I hate to say this, but - a suitcase? :(

(That's what we speculated about with Phylicia Barnes - and she was a teen.)

Sadly, I think yes.

Unfortunately the cordoned off area was done under the assumption that Jhessye had only been missing that day. With her not being in school for so long, the garbage from the critical time might not even have been protected.

Hopefully LE knew about this WAAAAY before we did and included that area.

Where are you Jhessye??? :(

"Please give me the handbook on how a mother is suppose to react in a time like this," Hunter said. "If there is an abduction handbook, if there is a 'take your kids away from your house sneak them away from you saying we're just going to talk to them and never give them back' handbook, tell me where it is. Because I'll buy it no matter how much it cost. Because I need help right now. I don't know what to do," said Hunter.

Wonder what those kids said during that interview? I wonder what she is worried that they said.

She either A) is deflecting from the reason the children were removed, feigning being unaware that she was not to have those children in her custody in the first place (as we have all speculated) or B) those kids divulged something that caused their removal. Those are the choices IMO

This is another case that just breaks my heart. How can people NOT be suspicious of the mother? Shes been in prison for torturing her elder siblings, right? I saw several reports in which the mom or grandma was saying the lack of media attention was racial...uh, no...its because she is known to abuse her kids. I am sad that this was even allowed to happen. I know they try to educate and reunite families but you dont send them to a class and then forget about them. I wish the procedures were changed to protect kids in reunification. I wish there were more ongoing education and wellness checks.

Well, I think she's off...something about the whole interview is just off...I have other descriptive words. But, I think to avoid banning...I'll stick with "off."
I believe she knows exactly what happened, and is responsible in one way or another.
Raising your voice and being animated, in an interview like this one is to deflect attention...God forbid say... the camera is on her too long..someone might detect something. She sorta reminds me of FCA. Too defensive and not really worried at all.

Well...at least she is talking. I have that much to say. If she is completely innocent, which she could very well be for all I know, I am not going to chastise her for leaving the child home with her older siblings for one hour in the middle of the day. I do that all the time with my 11,8 and 6 year olds. Not for long, but try to keep it under an hour. That said, we live in a nice neighborhood and know most of our neighbors well.

I will defend her on this issue and this issue alone, as I hear this in many other cases as well and think it is unfair. I do agree with her in the respect that there is no "handbook" on how to behave or how to react when your child is missing. Everyone has their opinions about it and they all differ.

I have seen people criticise Mark Lunsford, Elizabeth Smart's father and on and on down the line. If they get angry or animated, they are over the top, if they cry, they are crocodile tears, if they speak, their every word is analyzed and critiqued by body language experts, the media and people like us. If they say nothing, they are hiding something.

At this point, there is simply no evidence that this woman did anything to her daughter. While it wouldn't surprise me given her history in this case, we can't rely on that as evidence any more than how she comes across on TV.

BBM Well no, the best indicator of future behavior is to review the past. No one is that unlucky. If she is accused, its logical. To say its NOT an issue would be concerning. That's going to stand out in victimology. Its circumstancial but with no other leads...
