The Glendale Police Department says it now believes the body of missing 5-year-old Jhessye Shockley was thrown in a trash can in Tempe and may be in a landfill just south of the Valley.

Glendale Officer Tracey Breeden tells New Times that the case is now a homicide investigation and that Jhessye Shockley's mother, Jerice Hunter, is the primary focus.

Breeden says information was given to police -- after Hunter was arrested on child abuse charges last month -- that the 5-year-old's body was thrown in the trash. Breeden would only say the information was given to police through investigative leads and through Silent Witness.

Just bringng this forward since we were discussing how le came to the decision to search this landfill. This article was published on Dec. 21

It is encouraging to hear that they plan to prosecute whether or not they find Jhessye!

Someone called Silent Witness. GPD investigated and found it to be credible and true. Interesting that it was after she was arrested. No doubt in my mind, the GPS tracking devices which were put on those cars is related.

Another thing that struck me today. Not a single person besides her family has spoke up for the monster. Did she not have any friends at all? She was pregnant, she had interaction with someone. Who were these people she associated with and where are they now?

knox, remember when Jerice was in custody and LE said they had developed information since her arrest? I bet that was it!

Hunter has made sobbing attempts to declare her innocence since the day she reported her daughter missing more than two weeks after she was last seen alive. She's blamed everyone from the media to the Glendale Police Department for not locating her daughter. When we spoke to her, Hunter went ballistic when we asked if she had hurt her daughter.

"I really think they should take the focus off of me and quit asking people -- wasting time -- if I did something to my daughter," Hunter told us last month. "They should quit holding my babies hostage and trying to get them to say something [about what happened to Jahessye]. [Authorities are] telling me 'your kids aren't saying anything.' It's been 13 days. What do they expect my babies to say that they haven't already said? [CPS] don't wanna hear 'we love our mama, we wanna go home we want our mommy' -- they don't wanna hear that. They won't let me see them because they don't want them running into my arms. They don't wanna hear them scream 'mommy.'"

I don't want this little girl to be found in a landfill, because this is not where she deserves to be...BUT I do think that she is there and she will be found and soon. I have faith that the searchers are going to find her. Prayers for little Jhessye, those who love her and those who are going to find her!

BBM That arrest for child abuse was a wise move on the part of LE. Although they didn't pursue the charges to avoid double jeopardy later, did they have a notion people would start talking while Jerice was in jail? Maybe that's why she doesn't seem to have any loyal friends -- they are intimidated by her. Really, the only family member who's been adamant about Jerice's innocence is her mother. I think I remember her dad vouching for her initially, but now he's silent.

I think if I heard Jerice's children scream 'mommy' I would take it as my cue to call the police and tell them she's beating them again.

I remember when he appeared in that interview Donna Rossi did with the monster. He sat on the couch and never said a word, nor did he look at the monster while she was speaking. His body language really caught my attention and you're right we haven't seen hide nor hair of him for months. I think someone said he is a Pastor, is that true?

What I was trying to figure out is why he was sued jointly with her when she was evicted from her apartment in January? Isn't that section 8 housing she was living in? Didn't think you needed a guarantor in subsidized housing?

All of the alleged abuse happened weeks before Hunter called police on October 11. The last time anyone saw Jhessye alive was September 22, which was the last time records show her attending school. Her sisters say they never saw Jhessye the day her mother reported her missing, when Hunter told police that the older siblings were watching the girl as she ran errands.

The section is located on the western side of the landfill, about a half mile in, and not accessible to residential areas, Coombs said.

Police say 40 people will work eight hours a day on the operation. Those who are searching will be split into two teams of 12.

The search team includes sworn officers, detectives, members of the FBI, and Child Abduction Response Team (CART).

Coombs said a forensic team with Glendale police are standing by in case evidence is recovered.

Coombs said a forensic team with Glendale police are standing by in case evidence is recovered.

The search team will use equipment to pick up the trash and bring it to a sanitary search deck where it will be sifted through in smaller sections.

Other agencies are assisting. A HAZMAT response team, medical helicopter, paramedics, and the fire department are monitoring the health of personnel.

From PASA's link above. Bless those searching.

Most of the officers on-duty for this search volunteered.

"It is important to them," said Coombs. "The simple fact is that no 5-year-old should be left in a landfill."

Coombs explained that new GPS technology that was not available in landfill searches is giving them hope.

"We have one day's trash piled up where we are searching," he said. He said they are investigating tracks, and the very truck they believe transported the girl's remains to the landfill.

That's amazing. Bless their hearts.

BBM My guess is he was the one paying her rent. The apartment may have been leased in his name.
