Multiple federal agencies are now doing a joint assessment to see if accused Arizona killer Jared Lee Loughner has any possible link to the several fiery packages that were sent to the head of the Homeland Security Department and Maryland state officials last week, The Post has learned.

Does Loughner have a connection with Maryland? How would he know about the highway signs? Was there are recent report or discussion about them on tv or the internet?

After reading neighbors accounts of the father's bizzare behavior, I wonder if we are seeing evidence of the 'tree' the apple fell out of? Wonder if the father has some issues w/ the government and mental issues himself that his mentally ill son latched on to? Maybe we will find out that after being told by Pima School officials that their son was mentally ill, the parent(s) disagreed, therefore no help or treatment was sought? I am probably jumping the gun, but this barricade is beyond wierd (even if only trying to keep media away) JMO of course!

Thx. It looks like the article has been updated. When it was originally posted, there was no mention of the agents getting inside.

Based on this new info, it does look like the family was trying to keep the media at bay - I don't blame them at all.

I'm glad to learn the family members are all right. I wish the AZcentral had reported it accurately in the first place.

I am not surprised at all ss! JLL had an obsession/fixation on words, grammar and the person who sent those pkgs included a letter blasting them about HWY alert signs.

I also wonder if those flashing signs triggered some type of episode into mental illness. I am not really educated on the subject but I do know that outside stimulation can affect some types of MI. Is there anyone here with knowledge about such things?

If you mean "trigger" as in like a seizure,no, I don't think that happens.Unless he recently visited Maryland,I don't see a connection.

As others have said,it is very difficult to make someone take meds if they are over the age of 18. One of my friend's sons had some problems his 1st year in college and was admitted to a psych ward for a couple days. Despite the fact that they were paying for his health insurance,part of his issue was anger at his parents and he refused to see them or let the Dr. discuss the case with them. Its very frustrating. In this case it seems entirely different. It one thing to not be able to make your child accept help,its another to enable them and let them build a "shrine" with a skull in your yard. If thats true,somethings weird about them too.

Thanks hockeymom. I just saw the news report about the shrine with the skull in the backyard. I am just trying to understand this tragedy...but not sure that I ever will.
