If you mean "trigger" as in like a seizure,no, I don't think that happens.Unless he recently visited Maryland,I don't see a connection.
As others have said,it is very difficult to make someone take meds if they are over the age of 18. One of my friend's sons had some problems his 1st year in college and was admitted to a psych ward for a couple days. Despite the fact that they were paying for his health insurance,part of his issue was anger at his parents and he refused to see them or let the Dr. discuss the case with them. Its very frustrating. In this case it seems entirely different. It one thing to not be able to make your child accept help,its another to enable them and let them build a "shrine" with a skull in your yard. If thats true,somethings weird about them too.
