POSTERS offering a $5000 reward for finding missing Queensland surfer Peter Maynard “alive or not’’ have been put up in Bali.

The reward information has been added to police missing person announcements.

Locals say the move is most unusual and the incentive very generous. They say if anyone has information, it should encourage them to come forward.

A fortnight after Queensland surfer Peter Maynard went missing on an island near Bali, his family are reluctantly planning to leave the area and fly home.

"It's a tough decision — how long do you stay, how much more can you do?

"Obviously we'd like some sort of new information to come to hand before that happens [leaving Bali] to give us all a sense of closure [so we can] get on with our lives.

"We've also obviously got commitments back home to our own families and children and at some point we've got to make that really difficult decision to come home."



John Maynard said the family had felt the need to arrange their own aerial searches. "But we haven't been able to find a trace of him in that time."

"When we looked at the ocean conditions on the day of his disappearance it would appear that the board's hit the reef, the front end being light has floated into shore.

"Perhaps Peter and the other part of the board were swept away in the current, which basically goes in the direction of the areas we searched and continued to search."

That surfboard looks broken in a very neat way. Does anyone on WS have experience with surfing? Do surfboards typically break along straight lines?

I'm no expert, but it sounds as if many times - perhaps even more often than not - that a surfboard will snap along clean lines. There are YouTube videos about how to repair a snapped surfboard, and many Google images of snapped surfboards that have snapped along clean lines.

“While we continue to hold out the faintest of hope that Peter will return home safely one perfect day, we will for now remember him as an honest and respected family man,” John Maynard told the ABC.
“A loving husband, a hands-on father, a hard worker and great friend to the many people who were lucky enough to know him.


Melburnian expat surfer David Lewis, a Nusa Lembongan resident for 30 years, says all the surfing breaks on the island are extremely dangerous because of their shallow reefs.

At Shipwrecks, on the island’s northern point, the swell during the week of Mr Maynard’s visit was much bigger than usual.
“It’s easy to underestimate it,’’ said Mr Lewis. “People always hit the bottom because there are shallow reefs. Many come out with cuts and bruises. They don’t realise how dangerous it is.

“It would not take much to hit the bottom headfirst, you would be knocked out.’’
