Bath salts...a new self-harm & crime concern

  • #21
Synthetic substance abuse (i.e., bath salts) is increasing across the nation as hospitals see a rise in the number of related emergencies.

This comment is from an Iowa shop owner:

If Granny's doing this nasty stuff, how can we expect better of the kids?

Okay, so we are not talking actual bath salts, thankfully. I have a Jacuzzi bathtub and you can't put regular bubble bath in that or you'll be up to the ceiling in suds in no time.

New mother 'smoked bath salts in maternity ward two days after giving
birth... then punched and kicked staff and rolled around naked on hospital floor'
(Daily Mail)
A new mother has been charged with smoking the powerful synthetic stimulant known as bath salts two days after she gave birth, while still in the maternity ward of a central Pennsylvania hospital, and violently attacking staff.

Carla Murphy, of Altoona, is charged with aggravated assault and various drug counts for allegedly stripping naked and beating staff at the Altoona Regional Hospital on June 17.

Hospital police had to be called to subdue the 31-year-old after she stripped, rolled around on the shower floor, and was unable to answer basic questions posed by staff, according to the Altoona Mirror.

One question did not seem to be answered in that article----where is the newborn?

It seems as though CPS is going to let her have her newborn baby back. They went to the home to check the nursery. I don't think the nursery is the problem...

I also wonder about the baby. This is one little one who should not go home with the parents. I also noticed that the baby only weighed in at a little over 5 lbs., a relatively low birth weight by today's standards.

I hope the litte boy is drug free and gets to start off life with a good famil.

First we have fetal alcohol syndrome and crack babies. What is going to happen to "bath-salt" babies. I am too scared to ask. :what:

Don't think she'll be getting baby anytime soon, the man (?dad) at home was also arrested, drugs and paraphernalia found in the home. And this incubator is another thats rockin' the docket, looks like 6 times since 2010, drug charges, assault, robbery, DUI, and one endangering the welfare of children in 2010. And bench warrants for failure to appear. Had a possession arrest Jan 2012, (12 mo. probation given in April) baby born in June, assuming baby was not very premie she was using while pregnant. Praying the baby is OK.

I hope these 2 get some serious time, so they can't have the baby. Also hope this kid has at least 1 set of decent grandparents. I wonder if she planned on breatfeeding, I assume breatfeeding on bathsalts is as bad as any other drug.

Snacks, she's Carla Joan? I found she was a nursing assistant in a nursing home back in 2009 and assulted a resident. That's plain swell. Smokes flipping bath salts right in the maternity ward, and beats up nursing home patients.

One paper labeled her not even a hot white mess, but a hot Pennsyltucky mess.

Imagine the other women that were in that ward so thrilled to have their new baby dolls and this nut job is smoking flippin bath salts where I presume anyone else could have breathed that **** in. I think I might honestly be able to say even her with her nut job behavior that if I had a loved one delivered in that ward I'd have beat her down like a beast in the street.

Ya know what? She wanted to get high that bad why not have that boyfriend deliver some real drugs like a nice 99.9% pure bag of heroin and do the world a favor and her kids a favor and the nursing staff and cops a favor? There'd be no fight. No stripping. No rolling around like an animal in a sty. Just her and the spike in her bad breeder Pennsyltucky arm.

Sorry that is realistically harsh, but she put so many new mothers in harms way, and their newborns. Glad that Haldol worked. I wonder if she brought that in her bag with her to hospital? Did a friend deliver it? There's always a chance. There's always a glimer of hope for the worse addicts, but a d*mb ** like this? They should have tied her tubes when she stopped rolling around.

It's a local store for me. The baby is in CPS custody and will be released to a foster home. Word is that it will not be a family member--we can only hope!

If you have time, check out the comments--they are always the most interesting part of the "Altoona Mirror" articles (known to many locals as the "Altoona Smear." Altoona has really gone downhill over the last few years, now it is on the state's "distressed" municipality list with all of the big city problems formerly associated with Philadelphia, Harrisburg, and Pittsburgh. :(

I was thinking about all the other new moms and babies as well Filly - cannot imagine what that was like for them, all the kicking, punching, rolling around, cops and nurses trying to bring her under control. Can't imagine that as a movie scene, let alone real.

I agree, nursery is NOT the issue, bath salts are.

Wow, I can't believe this! She had to have been using while pregnant, why else would she do this in the hospital???? I can't even imagine what problems a baby will have if the mother used while pregnant.

Last night there was a progam on T.V. about babies being born addicted to pain pills. It was horrible! Watching the babies in the NICU. They were in so much pain. They have to give them morphine every 3 hours and then slowly wean them off the morphine.

I just don't understand.:banghead:

It's 9 months. Just 9 months that you need to act like a human being and then you give birth. I'm just angry right now. I doubt this is an onset of wanting to try the drug and like many I suspect she used during pregnancy. Just...why...

Yep, Filly it's Carla Joan. Did not see the nursing home thing, Thanks.

Thank God Almighty the baby will go to foster. Hope the baby can go to someone who understands special needs babies. Just saw a segment last night about babies born addicted to painkillers, it was heartbreaking, the tremors and pain, even with the morphine. Not finding anything about prenatal exposure to bath salts. Sounds like it may be similar to amphetamine withdrawal, but who knows what else is in there,

I saw the special too on prescription pill addicted babies. Breaks my heart. Those babies writhing in pain to get their fix. I asked an OB doctor why they just didn't let the babies quit cold turkey and he said, that they could actually go into seizures and have more complications.

I'm an awful person. Usually I have sympathy when it comes to addiction and everyone deserves some chance to prove they learned from their mistake. However, chicks like this? Angels Not Forgotten said it best. I mean a lousey 9 months you can't put in? This works my last nerve. Maybe because I've known people like her. Can't care less about her own let alone all the other mom's and infants and elderly.

That Pennsyltucky though is the best. You know I am so gonna use that one.:laughcry:
