The first has a max prison term of 3 months to two years and a fine of 26 to 200 euros. I'm still trying to find the penalty for involvement in death, it seems to vary wildly.

On a sadness level, if there is such a thing here on WS, this is a 1000+. Since I have a 4 year old grandson whom I adore, and often take care of, it's unbearable for to read about the abduction and death of this child. Such fatefully disastrous circumstances leading up this horror.

I recall an article where the mother was home with Dean on Tuesday because he had some sort of surgery. This makes me wonder if that had anything to do with what happened to him, mostly wondering what was different this time while this couple was caring for him, from all the other times.

A judge ruled that the injuries discovered to the boy’s face, torso and arms, “could in no way be explained by brutal games”."

Both Dean and his killer are from Belgium.
Both were found in the Nederlands. It isn’t yet clear (at least to the public) wheter he was killed in B or in N.

Moms lawyer, a very famous lawyer in Belgium, hopes he wil be tried in Belgium. He says the law in the Netherlands is too soft.

We should all take a lot of care in who we leave our children. Upthread someone mentioned about monitoring of this guy; the UK has the 'VISOR' system (*Violent and* Sexual Offender's Register). It's used to monitor sex offenders but also murderers. There's no way this guy would not have been monitored more under such a system. It's absolutely insane that this was allowed to happen, there is a lot of blame to be shared by many parties, and it is an utter waste of that little boy's life and future.

Thanks for clearing that up - wonder if Belgium follows the VISOR system as well or does something differently? (Belgium isn't in the UK, right? Or it's complicated?) Is this guy WAS actually monitored, ridiculous that NO ONE noticed he was regularly watching a child. Even if Dean was not over, there must have been evidence that a child stayed over like toys, maybe extra clothes, child cutlery set, etc.

The attorney representing the mother of Dean Verberckmoes wants her son’s suspected kidnapper and killer to be tried in Belgium, not the Netherlands. The Belgian child was taken by 34-year-old Belgian Dave De K., who was supposed to babysit the child with his Dutch girlfriend, R.W. She was also arrested in Belgium, according to media outlets there.

"My preference is clearly for Belgium," said Elke Verberckmoes’s lawyer, Jef Vermassen, in an interview in the Flemish newspaper De Morgen. "The penalties in the Netherlands, I'm sorry, are no big deal."


The lawyer wants the suspect to face a trial by jury at a court of assizes, where some of the most serious crimes in Belgium are heard. "I had a previous case involving a girl in Turnhout who was kidnapped and taken to the Netherlands, where she was raped and abused for one night," he said to De Morgen.

"She survived, but was left severely traumatized. The perpetrators were given ten and fifteen years in the Netherlands. That is not serious."

As far as I understood, Dean's mother got msm reports/links, about her son's killer from (friends, family?) , - after she reported her son's missing, kidnapping, so where were these friends in time of need? Didn't they offer help/support, when she suffered a depression?

Even being a WS member for so long, I never get used to these monsters out there..who do it again and again!
Sometimes, there is hardly justice,when you read about crimes, murders...

The girlfriend of 34-year-old Dave De Kock, who was arrested during a house search in Sint-Gillis-Waas in the investigation into the death of 4-year-old Dean Verberckmoes, has been arrested by the investigating judge in Dendermonde. This is confirmed by the East Flanders Public Prosecutor's Office. The woman has been arrested on suspicion of murder and kidnapping, but it is not yet clear whether she played an active role in the boy's death.

As dutch I can say that I agree wholeheartedly about our soft justice system. Either day Belgium seems to be soft too, 10 years for beating a child to death in 2008 and out after 8!?! I wouldn’t say that Belgium has much harsher sentences by any means.. it’s common in the eu to get low sentences for murder and life sentences are rare and often paroled earlier. It’s shameful and it never feels as justice has been served. I can’t imagine how the families must feel when they lost a loved one and murderer doesn’t even get full 25 years for that ( often its 25y for murder out earlier ).

I was suspicious of her from the start. I found it odd that she wouldn’t alert someone that Dean was taken . There is also no way she didn’t know about ongoing abuse of Dean.

Case that shocked me in the Netherlands was murder of Anne. Convicted violent sex offender was allowed to leave unsupervised psychiatrist facility which ended with brutal rape and murder of Anne. I agree I often get angry after reading the sentences for violent crimes in the Netherlands. Dave should not be walking the streets its a failure of justice system.

Following consultation between the Dutch and Belgian authorities, it was decided that the prosecution of Dave de Kock, one of the main suspects in the death of 4-year-old Dean will take place in Belgium, announced the Dutch Public Prosecutor’s Office on Wednesday.

Currently, De Kock is still in a cell in the Netherlands after he was arrested in the Dutch town of Meerkerk on Monday, in connection with the disappearance of the 4-year-old Dean Verberckmoes. In the evening, the toddler was found dead by the police on the island of Neeltje Jans in the Dutch province of Zeeland, some 120 kilometres away.

“As the victim, the next of kin and the suspect all have Belgian nationality, a prosecution by the Belgians is the most opportune,” the Dutch public prosecutor said in a press statement. “The Dutch part of the investigation will be continued and the results will be passed on to the Belgians. Further investigations are also being carried out in Belgium.”
