Francisca da Silva, 32, was pronounced dead during the early hours of Tuesday at Dircea Arcoverde State Hospital in Parnaíba, a city in the northeastern state of Piauí.

Her death comes a day after her three-year-old daughter, Maria Lauane da Silva, died. Her one-year-old son, Igno da Silva, died last Thursday.

Francisca da Silva's 18-year-old brother, Manoel da Silva, died in an ambulance while he was being rushed to a local hospital.

Her four-year-old daughter, Maria Gabrielle da Silva, is under observation and in critical condition at Teresina Emergency Hospital in Teresina.

Four other family members have been discharged from hospital, where they received treatment after eating the rice, which authorities confirmed was contaminated with terbufos, a toxic substance found in pesticides and agriculture chemicals.

Its sale for residential use is prohibited under Brazilian law.

'It's impossible for it to have ended up there without someone's intention,' Civil Police chief Abimael Silva said, as quoted by Brazilian news outlet G1

Dr. Antônio Nunes, who oversees the Piauí Institute of Legal Medicine, told the outlet that there were 'visible granules' of terbufos in the rice that was collected.

A second food poisoning tragedy in Brazil turns into a murder probe after rat poison is found in a New Year's meal, killing three, following a similar case.

A New Year's Day meal turned into a harrowing tragedy in Brazil after rat poison was discovered in the food, leading to the deaths of three family members: one-year-old Igno Davi da Silva, his 18-year-old uncle Manoel, and three-year-old sister Lauane. The devastating incident has prompted authorities to launch a murder investigation

Police chief Abimael Silva told the programme: 'Someone put the substance in the rice on the first day.

'We understand that there was an intention to put this substance in their food and we're going to start a murder investigation, ruling out natural or accidental death.'

Police sources said they haven't ruled out the possibility a relative is responsible

Police probing the food poisoning deaths of four people including two young children have arrested the youngsters’ stepfather.

Francisco de Assis Pereira da Costa was held this morning on suspicion of killing one-year-old Igno Davi da Silva, his three-year-old sister Lauane, his 32-year-old partner Francisca Maria da Silva and Francisca Maria’s 18-year-old brother Manoel.

Based on the evidence, the Civil Police concluded that Francisco was the main suspect responsible for the crime, mainly after finding several contradictions in his statements and a history of hostility and contempt on his part towards the victims, especially his stepdaughter Francisca Maria .

“He gave more than three versions of what happened in that interval. (…) In addition to having complete contempt for Dona Francisca’s children, whom he called primates, they lived like a tribe of Indians, unhygienic people, people he didn’t want to live with, but tolerated. Specifically for Mrs. Francisca Maria, he said that she was a creature who had a stupid, foolish, cunning mind, dead of laziness, useless, practically almost useless”, reported the delegate about Francisco’s testimony.

Therefore, Francisco de Assis Pereira da Costa is, to date, the main suspect in the crime. However, delegate Abimael Silva reinforced that the investigation remains ongoing, with a deadline of 30 days for the conclusion of the police investigation, which may be extended – the same period as Francisco’s temporary arrest.
