Bush signs bill to collect all newborns' DNA

Great now insurance companies will have yet another reason to not provide coverage for certain individuals!

For anyone that honestly thinks this is being done to benefit children and it isn't about MONEY.....I feel sorry for you.

Are you allowed to not have your child's DNA taken - or is that choice gone since it's a law? Thank goodness I've had all my little ones. If this is mandatory, I would absolutely have a home birth.
Yes, has anyone bothered reading the bill?

Those that do not see anything wrong in having the government in collecting and keeping newborns DnA, would you be willing to give the government your own?

Sure. I have nothing to hide.

Well, I don't have a problem with people who want to voluntarily give up this information. However, I do have a problem with (by virtue of federal law) people forcing me to give it up against my will.

I have nothing to hide either, *today*. Having something to hide doesn't necessarily mean you've done something wrong. Having something to hide can come as a product of someone else deciding you've done something they don't like, which history has shown time and time again that it can be something as simple as race, religion, or even philosophy.

I'm heavily involved in politics on a local, state, and national level. I often have a different viewpoint than those in my own party and I am suffering because of it. People are vicious and when you work in an arena where you're challenging longstanding ideas within your own group, people come out of the woodwork to attack you. I worry about what could happen as a result of stirring the pot, but someone HAS to do it or we are in some deep trouble. The last thing I need is someone who has it "out" for me, to have access to my children's blood and DNA.

Not everyone in this world is a "good" person. In fact, as we can see by the cases handled here, there are a LOT of very bad people out there. We have to protect ourselves proactively. We don't want to be looking back in 20 years thinking "oh, God if we only could have stopped that bill from passing". Err on the side of caution.

Good point and seeing how the insurance companies have so many ties and advocates in DC I foresee that they will recieve this information on an ongoing basis.

Interesting discussion going on here. I can see both sides of the debate but I still stand strong that this is something that I do not approve of. We are no longer a democracy and haven't been in quite some time (have we really ever been one?). The government does not care what is best for the people and they sure don't care what the vast majority of us want.

If they were really concerned about the health of babies there would be free or affordable health care for families.

Follow the money...there's some ( tons) to be made somewhere and it will be at our expense and detriment

i will believe it when i see it.

Well, on the crime level, wouldn't it be nice to tie DNA at crime scenes to a massive database, instead of only the offender database we currently have?

Do you honestly think that our government and our hospital personnel could case less about the health of our babies or are you just trying to say that the health issues are not what this was put in place for?

Sure. I have nothing to hide.

Neither do I, but I would never willingly give the government my or my child's DNA.

Yes, has anyone bothered reading the bill?

I have, but I admit to glazing over. And I usually have a stomach for that sort of "language" having worked with attorneys for so long.

If this is optional, that's fine - let folks do it if they wish.
