The Merced County Sheriff's Office expects they will get a chance to talk to Salgado sometime before Wednesday morning.

Maybe his condition isn't as bad as we might think.

If this guy is destroying evidence then its not the same situation IMO. I fear for this family. I think this not going to be the same outcome.MOO.

That the previous victims were unharmed is extremely good news! I wish we had information about his prior crimes. I did check the sex offender registry and he is thankfully not in it.

If this guy didn't have anthing to hide then why attempt suicide. I don't believe it. Before he contemplated suicide why not let tell family at least where they are. There is a reason he did not.

Merced is a relatively small (~85,000 people) mostly farming town. I don't think they have much experience with this kind of thing so they are probably scrambling to hire media consultants and lawyers to guide them. Nothing wrong with that. I saw a couple of interviews with the county sherrif today and he did a good job.

Actually, the Sheriff has quite a bit of experience with the media. A few years ago a student at UC Merced stabbed others and was killed by police. He had been radicalized via the Internet. The FBI came in to help the Sheriff’s Department with the investigation. The world’s media descended on Merced for quite a few months. See link.

I wish I could believe that. I want to believe that. But, the fact that he tried to kill himself makes me think that it is not likely that they will be found safe. I so want to be wrong, and I applaud your optimism.

I thought that there might be more than one person involved, but the sheriff's description of the video (in the Twitter link) makes it sound as if Salgado really did act alone. I suppose there is a slim chance that he might have delivered them to someone else, and that chance would probably be the only hope that they are still alive.

The long delay until the press conference also has me worried.

It may not be a slim chance. It might be true. Either this family is dead or they may have been passed on to someone else. I just don't see them being alive, especially when eveidence is being destroyed and the guy is attempting to commit suicide. So IMO anything could have happened. Why has he not told his family that he confessed to where they are?

If they have been located they are not alive. We would have heard immediately had they been “rescued”.

Almost all violent offenders evolve/escalate their offenses over time if left unrestrained/unchecked. Recidivist violent offenders are predominantly diagnosed with APD/sociopathy. There is no treatment or cure for it (i.e. no "rehabilitation"). If we "follow the science", then why let them out?

Logically, I think you are 100% correct.

I am sure the more brainy senior "A team" cartel faction leaders would agree that the same terror overkill that is SOP in Mexico is usually counter productive in the USA.

But.....

My general understanding is that the Cartels are not military type hierarchies. Rather, each faction's "A" team operates over a number of semi autonomous "B" team franchises. B team players with the best potential are then promoted to the "exhalted" A team.

Getting to the point.....

There could well be a gap between the brainier "A" team members big picture understandings of over kill violence in the USA and the more fuzzy, less complete and plain less capable understandings of "B" team members.

This could lead to a situation where say, retribution for refusing to cooperate is ordered by the "A" team . They then distance themselves from actual implementation. The less brainy "B" team component then pulls a horrific stunt.

You have to keep in mind, the crime this guy went to prison for was attempted false imprisonment. Meaning, he was unsuccessful. Who knows what the outcome would have been that time - it wasn't his choice that the victims were still alive at the end of his crime last time.

I've followed countless cases where a kidnapper is arrested and the victim isn't found at the same time. Not once have I seen it end well (the last time was a couple weeks ago with Eliza Fletcher).

We'll have a better feel for things during the press conference tomorrow though.
