CA - Aiden Leos, 6, fatally shot in road rage confrontation, Orange, 21 May 2021 *Arrests*

Good post.

The following is MOO

I used to live off the 91 and took the 91 and 55 daily. You are correct that there are a lot of locals commuting to work. However, There are a few things I can think of that feed into the probabilities of commuter vs. outsider.
The 91 is one of only a few logical routes to Las Vegas and “the River” from Orange County. “The River” refers to the Colorado River. There are several spots along it that are popular weekend getaways for those who enjoy drinking, wake boarding/ skiing, drinking, offf-roading, drinking, jet-skiing and drinking. For me, the 2nd best time to head out to Vegas/Havasu is Friday morning . Though there is morning traffic heading east, the morning commute going west is much tougher, jammed with commuters going to jobs in Orange County and returning home to more affordable housing east of OC. So while EB commuters are out there at 8 am, there is also a lot of Vegas and river traffic trying to get through the 91 before noon on Friday when the real traffic arrives.

I agree that two persons in the suspect vehicle isn’t the recipe for a successful secret.
But if they were a couple, married, whatever, the woman driver might be afraid to speak out. MOO

Can someone explain, please the types of lanes and transponders related to that? Thanks.
This link describes the transponders available in CA:

http://fastrak.org/FASTRAK

We still have a FasTrak transponder from when we briefly lived in Reno and needed to travel to the bay area frequently. Our transponder has the switch on it, where you can indicate how many occupants you have in the car for using the HOV lanes (so you can receive carpool discounts). In certain areas, you need to have the transponder to use the HOV lanes without getting a fine. In the bay area, the transponders are also used for bridge and toll roads and can be used for parking fees at the San Francisco airport. Some of this may have changed as we are back in the midwest now. A CA native can probably explain better, and make corrections to the above if needed.

Well, I was just thinking about her. First, she left the scene of a crime (even w/o knowing the child was hit). Would she be considered an accomplice? Not sure. My thoughts and opinions only.

Penal Code 31 PC - Aiding And Abetting (Accomplice Liability)

"Penal Code 31 PC is the California statute that defines aiding and abetting a crime. This section makes it illegal to encourage, facilitate or aid in the commission of a criminal act. A person who aids and abets a crime faces the same punishment as the one who directly commits the crime."

its the HOV lanes, but another local said that area does not have the toll HOV lanes. i am hoping CHP is dumping DMV records on vw golfs in the area.

Wondering, and not sure. Did she aid and abet if she was driving and did not know he was going to shoot a car? (thinking out loud). Ahh, but she did facilitate because she pulled the car behind the little boy's car. So I would say she was aiding and abetting a crime. MHOO

In the stretch of the 55 freeway where the shooting occurred, there is a standard HOV lane. Roughly 3 miles ahead, the 55 ends at an interchange. Drivers have the choice to head west via the 91 west, east via the 91 east, or you can use one of a few off ramps to exit the freeway.

91 west doesn’t have an HOV lane or tolls lanes beyond the interchange. Drivers who want to continue on to the 91 east have the choice between using toll lanes or free lanes. The toll lanes on the 91 east require a transponder. If you don’t have a transponder, you run the risk of a citation from highway patrol and a toll evasion notice.

It has been stated that the suspects continued on the 91 east after the shooting. They were last spotted on the 91 east near McKinley street in Riverside. The McKinley exit is 25-30 miles from the spot where the shooting occurred.

IMO, using the 91 as a ‘getaway’ route is crazy. It’s one of the most congested stretches of road in the country. They were lucky it was Friday and lucky they were going against morning traffic.

I can’t stop thinking about this case. It’s so tragic and I really feel for the family.

I seem to focus on different aspects of it every few days. I’m currently fixated on the picture of the suspect vehicle. It appears to have significant damage to the back bumper and hatch. Given the damage, along with the relative scarcity of this make and model, I’m surprised we haven’t seen an arrest or two. I think it’s possible that LE has someone in their sights. I hope so.

I hope so, but I think that could depend on how "dramatic" the circumstances were.

A scenario featuring attention grabbing swerving, acceleration and braking, and the perpetrator posturing or actually attempting to aim the weapon out the window while driving would get witnessed in the true sense of the word.

But.... a scenario featuring a single merge, a swerve, followed by the perpetrator driving past and firing one shot into the trunk with out posturing and with out extended arm aiming etc. would not draw alot of attention.

I am thinking that the second scenario is more likely. The perpetrator shot into the side of the trunk area while driving by. This could support that the perpetrator was not fully trying to kill an occupant. Rather, he was going to shoot into the side of trunk as a warning. He may not have seen the car seat, then misjudged the angle.

This, would, of course makes no difference in regards to punishment. The more severe, the better.

But a shot into the trunk of the vehicle, even if not aimed at a passenger, could ignite the gas tank….

It is just about 2 weeks since that sweet boy was killed.
The investigators and/or the DA handling this case need have another press conference.
I refuse to believe that the picture of the VW they released is the one and only photo of that particular car available to them, after 2 weeks.
Were any shell casings found when they shut down that portion of the highway and walked shoulder to shoulder searching?
Were they able to recover the bullet that hit Aiden for future ballistics comparison?
Has the tip line produced any viable leads.
Has the request of the public who were driving that road to turn over any dashcam footage been fruitful?

i am guessing they have some of that but might be playing close to the vest.

I agree that must be what they’re doing
But then it is hard to take at face value the requests for info and tips on the car that they have made.

Although the CHP image of the VW has some pixelation, I think the rear bumper area is intact. I’ve looked at some pictures of new 2018 and 2019 Sportwagens (VW Golf station wagons) and the rear bumper profile and lights look about the same as the suspect vehicle, with slit-like tail lights, and a complex rear bumper and fender profile. I can’t find a picture without copyright issues that I can post here yet, but I think the vehicle might not be damaged at all.
