RE: airbags
From the timeline, BBM:
F 8/30/13 btw 4:20 & 5:15am Castaic
SUV CRASH: The crash had to happen between 4:20 a.m. and 5:15 a.m. when law enforcement arrived for a training exercise, KL said. It had gone down a 15-foot ravine nose first and landed on the passenger side. BL (or someone) used an emergency tool to break the back window. Or, back window shattered as a result of the crash.
KL: Airbag/s did not deploy.
DRZ: Keys were in the SUV/ignition.

- - - - DRZ: The way I heard it was the vehicle went around the gate (didn't hit it) and missed the cell tower and veered toward the drop off. That leads me to believe it was going straight and one side dropped off causing it to roll.

- - - - DRZ: One strange thing that was observed was that in the tire marks, there were mounds of dirt behind point of travel as to indicate acceleration NOT braking. Now, again, this could be a last minute effort to "save" the vehicle from going over OR one to dump it.

- - - - DRZ: Also the vehicle came down on the nose, not on the rear as stated by someone else, it rolled, but landed on nose, then rested on passenger side.

DRZ: The airbags didn't deploy in Bryces car because there was no front end collision, the car rolled. Websleuths Crime Sleuthing Community - View Single Post - CA CA - Bryce Laspisa, 19, Castaic, 30 Aug 2013 - #1

- - - - DRZ: There was / is a discrepancy about the emergency tool. The sheriff first on the scene said it was used. Another said it wasn't.

- - - - DRZ: I don't think the "emergency tool" was found and don't even know if it was used, the window might have broken in the crash. My sister told me she bought one of those tools to cut the seat belt / break windows etc and had it in the glove box or center console.

- - - - DRZ: It is still not known conclusively if the emergency tool was used to break the rear window or if it was broken in the crash.
