Being in California my whole life I have LIVED IT in real time. In the Malibu Canyon fires a few years ago, our home was surrounded on 3 sides by a wall of flames.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/October_2007_California_wildfires

The October 2007 California wildfires were a series of about thirty wildfires (with 17 of them becoming major wildfires)[8] that began igniting across Southern California on October 20. At least 1,500 homes were destroyed[9] and approximately 970,977 acres (about 3,900 km², or 1,500 mi²) of land was burned from Santa Barbara County to the U.S.–Mexico border, surpassing the October 2003 California wildfires in scope, which were estimated to have burned 800,000 acres (3,200 km2).[4] The wildfires killed a total of 14 people, with nine of them dying directly from the fires;[10] 160 others were injured, including at least 124 firefighters.[4][11] The raging fire was visible from space.[12]

The Canyon Fire burned around Malibu, California, specifically in Malibu Canyon. It was the first of the October 2007 California wildfires to receive significant attention from the national media.[65] In addition to damaging or destroying 14 homes, the fire destroyed two Malibu landmarks: Castle Kashan and the Presbyterian Church.

I heard about that drone halting the firefighting early on. It seems to be happening around every fire now. Also, San B Fire Dept had to issue a warning for people on the highways not to leave their cars because the water drops could seriously injure them.

Yes 2007 was a horrible year. We had the Santiago Fire and spent a few days worrying it was going to flash down the canyon. My ex was stuck on the roof of his industrial unit and has photos of flames lapping around the parking lot. One friend had flames on 3 sides, like you. San Diego had it pretty bad too.

Now we no longer have a fire season. It's scary they start so early. Just hope we get that El Nino rain this year!

Flight track for the DC-10 Tanker ("Tonka Air") that made a pass over the fire an hour ago. Currently it is parked at San Bernardino Airport (KSBD) .

Lots of dirt roads around there. It is the high desert. Not many homes right there. Way too hot. It is a busy fwy because it links to Las Vegas. But otherwise it would be not so busy.

Flight track of spotter aircraft (Rockwell 690 Commander) CURRENTLY circling over the fire area.

Gives you a good idea of the location and topography of the area

The properties up there are between 1 acre and 5 acres. Lots of scrub and dirt, not many trees. What's heartbreaking right now is that so many people have horses and other livestock they weren't able to evacuate as it's moving so fast.

There are many, many, volunteers with livestock trailers waiting to be allowed back up there to evacuate the large animals. If you've been watching the news footage, I'm sure you've seen that people really do pull together anytime something like this happens. The Red Cross are quick to get into action, animal rescues and just ordinary neighbors are always quick to respond to help in any way they can.

I was here for the 2007 fires and we offered up our home to a friend's extended family burned out of Santa Clarita. There were no hotel rooms to be had in SoCal there were so many people evacuated.

Just want to add one more thing. This fire is burning scrub. The fires near me burned out the mountainside scrub, yes, but also more suburban areas. There is nothing scarier - to me - than seeing a eucalyptus or a palm tree catch fire! They go up like torches, and if there is wind, one spark can go up to 1/2 mile and start a whole new fire, just from one ember.

Fire in SoCal scares me much, much, more than a quake TBH.

This is the North Fire.

Here's a couple links to WildlandFire.com. It's a firefighter's forum.
This is the Initial Attack Thread ("for what the fire is doing and what the troops are doing to control it")
And this thread is for General Discussion (for questions and discussions).

May God keep the firefighters safe.
