Accused cop killer erupts in court: ‘I'm going to kill all you m...........’

After two and a half days of behaving himself in court, accused cop killer Luis Bracamontes erupted in a profane tirade Wednesday, saying he was glad he killed two Sacramento-area deputies in October 2014 and wanted to kill more.

"I'm going to kill all you motherf------ if I get the chance," Bracamontes said as deputies began shackling him to a chair in a Sacramento Superior courtroom after a lunch break during a hearing in his case.

....He continued to swear, saying he didn't care, but appeared to calm down as the judge as asked deputies if they could loosen his restraints but keep him securely shackled.

The hearing then resumed. Ironically, it was held to determine whether news coverage of the case – and of Bracamontes' explosive tirades – has made it impossible to find an impartial jury.

The judge has not indicated when he might decide whether to move the trial, which is set to begin in October, but the defense already has a backup plan in mind.

If the judge rejects a change of venue, they are asking him to order a survey of Sacramento’s eligible jurors to determine how many are Hispanic.

3 years later: Deputies killed in NorCal manhunt remembered

It’s been three years since two deputies from Sacramento and Placer counties were killed in a crime spree and manhunt that spanned both counties.

Sacramento County sheriff’s Deputy Danny Oliver and Placer County sheriff’s Detective Michael David Davis Jr. were shot dead in two separate locations on Oct. 24, 2014 in an hours-long chase that also left a third deputy injured.

The trial got pushed back to January.

Trial starts for illegal immigrant charged with gunning down two Sacramento deputies

More than three years after a daylong rampage left two Sacramento area deputies dead, the two suspects in the case are due in court Tuesday for the start of a trial that is expected to last several months.

Luis Bracamontes, 37, a Mexican citizen who had been deported repeatedly but continued to slip back into the United States, faces the death penalty if convicted in the Oct. 24, 2014, slayings of Deputies Danny Oliver and Michael Davis Jr.

His wife, Janelle Monroy, a 41-year-old native of Phoenix, faces a sentence of up to life in prison.

A new low: Accused cop killer mocks his victim and families in court

‘He’s trying to act like he’s crazy,’ says witness called ‘N-word’ by confessed cop killer

link for above tweets: https://twitter.com/StantonSam

and an article: http://www.sacbee.com/news/local/crime/article195357719.html

....Bracamontes, an illegal immigrant from Mexico accused of gunning down Sacramento-area Deputies Danny Oliver and Michael Davis Jr. in 2014, was removed from court twice Thursday morning after outbursts at Oliver’s partner, as well as at the slain lawmen’s families.
Then he was allowed to return for the afternoon session and capped off the day by hurling the “N-word” and other racial insults at the final witness of the day, an African-American man who said Bracamontes shot him five times in a failed attempt at a carjacking.

“You’re lucky I didn’t kill you,” Bracamontes said as Anthony Holmes left the witness stand.
“F--- you,” Holmes replied as he walked out of the courtroom.
[.....]
The incidents marked the latest in a series of outbursts from Bracamontes going back months. Sacramento Superior Court Judge Steve White warned him repeatedly that he would wind up watching his own trial on closed-circuit television rather than in court if his behavior continued.
[.....]
For the most part, family members of the dead deputies have sat stone-faced staring back at the defendant, but Thursday’s court session was an emotional one for some in the audience as Brown described Oliver’s ambush slaying on Oct. 24, 2014, in the parking lot of an Arden Way Motel 6.
[.....]
White immediately barked, “Be quiet,” then had the two juries hearing the case against Bracamontes and his wife, Janelle Monroy, leave the courtroom.

White told Bracamontes he had the right to attend court but could not continue to disrupt proceedings and had him removed.

“Please take him away,” the judge told deputies, who escorted the heavily shackled prisoner away.

After taking a break and allowing the juries to leave at midmorning, White declared that Bracamontes said he would behave himself and was allowed back in to hear Brown testify.

That wouldn’t last long.

The trial continues Monday.

Does the court not have a viewing room to put the felon in? One where he can watch and listen. He can shout all he wants but the courtroom cannot hear unless the Judge turns on a sound switch? Thanks

  • #67
Yes, they do! Wondering why the Judge hasn't put him in there yet with all his outbursts! Maybe on Monday he'll be there....

Defense lawyers for confessed deputy killer Luis Bracamontes asked yet again for a mistrial Monday, arguing that their client is mentally ill and saying his repeated outbursts have made it impossible for jurors to treat him fairly.

Sacramento Superior Court Judge Steve White ultimately rejected those efforts and the trial began its fourth day Monday, but he made it clear that one more outburst from Bracamontes will result in him being barred from the courtroom and forced to watch his trial on a video feed.

“If you disrupt these proceedings one more time you will be removed,” White told Bracamontes.
[.....]
Your conduct is entirely volitional, it is timed and targeted primarily at witnesses but also jurors,” the judge said.

Prosecutor Rod Norgaard said he has watched Bracamontes make faces or hard stares at the jurors and that he should not be allowed to benefit from his own misconduct by winning a mistrial.

Bracamontes did not speak or make any outbursts during the morning portion of the trial, which is focused on a woman who authorities say was carjacked by him after Oliver was shot to death.

The judge has had enough: He admitted to killing cops and hurled the ‘N-word’ at jurors. Can they give him a fair trial?

Luis Bracamontes got his wish.

After listening to hours of testimony Wednesday about the bloody 2014 gunbattle he had with deputies in Auburn, the confessed cop killer declared that he no longer wished to be present.

“F--- it, I don’t wanna be here no more,” Bracamontes blurted out, interrupting the testimony of a deputy he had wounded during the shootout. “F--- the jury, too. And the dead cops, and their stupid f------ families, too.”

Sacramento Superior Court Judge Steve White immediately obliged him, directing both juries in the case to leave the courtroom, then ordering deputies to escort the heavily shackled prisoner to a courthouse holding cell equipped with video equipment.

Thanks for the Auburn Journal article! I used to get that every day! Should have known to look there for some kind of update!

I'm guessing court is dark on Fridays? That is usual for California....

So - today we have:

*Trial continues (started Jan. 16) - CA - Det. Michael Davis, Jr. (42) & Dep. Danny Oliver (47) (Oct. 24, 2014) - Luis Enrique Monroy Bracamontes aka Marcelo Marquez (34) indicted for 2 counts 1st degree murder, attempted murder, carjacking & attempted carjacking. DP case. Court dark on Fridays.
1/24: White later issued a formal ruling that Bracamontes remain out of court during the entire guilt phase of the trial, although he agreed to entertain defense motions to allow him back in if they are supported by enough evidence.
and for Janelle Marquez Monroy (41) wife charged with assisting her husband. No DP, faces life in prison. 2 separate juries

‘Sinaloa Cartel is watching.’ Confessed cop killer scrawled threats on cell walls.

Luis Bracamontes is locked in a holding cell watching his death penalty trial on a video feed, but the confessed cop killer’s threats and profanity were still echoing in the courtroom Wednesday.
[.....]
The prosecutors – Rod Norgaard from Sacramento County and Dave Tellman from Placer County – rested their case in the morning Wednesday (Jan. 31), the 10th day of trial. Bracamontes’ public defenders already have acknowledged that their client is responsible for killing the deputies.

When the trial resumes next week, the focus is expected to turn to Bracamontes’ wife, who is charged with murder in the Davis slaying and is accused of helping Bracamontes along his path from Sacramento to Auburn, where he was arrested after hiding in a house.

Confessed cop killer’s wife: He said he would cut my face off with a box cutter

Link: https://twitter.com/StantonSam

Bidding to save herself from a life prison sentence, the wife of confessed cop killer Luis Bracamontes testified Monday that she was in fear for days that he would kill her, both before and after he began the 2014 crime spree that resulted in the killings of two Sacramento-area deputies.

Testifying in front of her husband – who was allowed back into the courtroom by Sacramento Superior Court Judge Steve White to watch – Janelle Monroy described a fight in their Utah home over an alleged affair that left her bruised on her face and arms and included him threatening to kill her.
[.....]
Monroy testified for more than two hours Monday morning in what is essentially Kmeto’s moon shot, an effort to convince the jury that Monroy was locked in an abusive relationship with a volatile husband who was always armed.
[.....]
Prosecutors don’t see the case as the story of a terrified woman in the thrall of her husband. They contend Monroy was a willing accomplice who helped move Bracamontes’ AR-15 rifle from vehicle to vehicle as he carjacked his way from Sacramento, where Oliver was killed, to Auburn, where Davis died in a gunfight.

Monroy is charged in Davis’ slaying and with aiding and abetting her husband. Sacramento prosecutor Rod Norgaard began his cross-examination just before the lunch break by essentially calling her a liar.
[.....]
After Monroy’s testimony, Bracamontes’ defense attorneys rested their case without presenting any witnesses. The judge asked Bracamontes if he was willingly agreeing to not testify in his own defense, and he answered yes.

The case is now expected to go to closing arguments for both juries. The Monroy jury will hear arguments Wednesday, while the Bracamontes jury is expected to hear them Thursday.

Janelle Monroy is subdued with head bowed as she awaits closing arguments in Sacramento/Auburn cop killing trial. She faces life in slaying of one cop. Husband Luis Bracamontes, who is not here today, could face death in both slayings. Closings for him start Thursday.

‘She’s the CEO here.’ Wife of confessed cop killer was no victim, prosecutor says http://www.sacbee.com/news/local/crime/article198848039.html#storylink=cpy

Janelle Monroy held her head in one hand and cried quietly Wednesday as a prosecutor began tearing apart her defense in closing arguments designed to send her to prison for life.
[.....]
The jury got the case late Wednesday afternoon after receiving instructions from Sacramento Superior Court Judge Steve White. A second jury hearing Bracamontes’ case is expected to begin deliberations after closing arguments Thursday.

Monroy faces charges of murder, attempted murder, carjacking, attempted carjacking and possession of an assault rifle and could be sentenced to 25 years to life. The murder charge stems from the death of Davis, who prosecutors say died from an AR-15 rifle round fired by Bracamontes.

Prosecutors contend that Monroy is guilty because she moved the AR-15 from vehicle to vehicle as Bracamontes carjacked his way from Sacramento to Auburn.

‘Nothing but hate.’ Prosecutors aim to get death penalty for admitted cop killer

Defense argument in cop killer case: "He shot both of them." http://www.sacbee.com/news/local/crime/article199095674.html … #Bracamontes

‘Nothing but hate.’ Prosecutors aim to get death penalty for admitted cop killer http://www.sacbee.com/news/local/crime/article199095674.html#storylink=cpy

With confessed cop killer Luis Bracamontes watching quietly from the defense table, prosecutors began a methodical closing argument Thursday designed to send him to the death chamber at San Quentin.
[.....]
Dawson (Defense Attorney) stopped short of asking the jury to find his client not guilty, but reminded them that they can consider the degree to which meth use contributed to his actions.

That, in essence, was the extent of Bracamontes’ defense. His lawyers called no witnesses on his behalf, and Bracamontes did not testify in the case, which went to the jury for deliberations Thursday afternoon.
[.....]
Monroy, who faces murder and other charges in the slaying of Placer Detective Michael Davis Jr., is awaiting a verdict from a jury that began deliberations late Wednesday.

and now we :waiting: for the Jurors verdict....

Gotta figure the verdict on #Bracamontes comes in today: ‘Nothing but hate.’ Prosecutors aim to get death penalty for admitted cop killer

Still waiting on verdict in cop killing case against Luis Bracamontes and Janelle Monroy. Bracamontes jury has asked to see an exhibit: the timeline of the Oct. 2014 rampage.

Some family members of slain deputies - Sacramento Deputy Danny Oliver and Placer Det. Michael Davis Jr. - showed up early to wait for verdict. #Bracamontes

Former Placer Deputy Chuck Bardo, who survived a gun battle with Luis Bracamontes, is in lobby wearing a black T-shirt with “Michael Davis Jr - End of Watch” emblazoned on it. #Bracamontes

I'll keep the tweeter account open just in case a verdict comes in....
