Attorneys Discuss Jury Selection for Man Charged with Murdering Dr. Henry Han and Family

October 28, 2020

Attorneys gathered virtually in Santa Barbara County Superior Court on Wednesday to discuss jury selection for the man charged in the Han family triple-murder case.

Also covered in the hearing before Judge Brian Hill was how the capital murder trial of Pierre F. Haobsh would be conducted during the coronavirus pandemic.
[.....]
The Santa Barbara court now is gearing up to prepare for a large number of prospective jurors, and jury selection is expected to occur at another facility since courtrooms have limited capacity to ensure the appropriate social distancing standards implemented by public health officials.

Planning for the jury selection process amid the COVID-19 situation includes preparation of check-in procedures with documents, checks of temperatures, sanitization, face coverings, and other precautions designed to minimize the risk of transmitting COVID-19.

“My thought was we would end up doing the trial in one of our courtrooms, but the jury selection process would take place somewhere else,” Hill said.

Wearing glasses and orange-colored Santa Barbara County Jail clothing, Haobsh appeared via Zoom conferencing from a solo room at the Santa Barbara County Jail because of the coronavirus pandemic.
[.....]
Planning also includes education on what the trial would look like, including the seating needed to meet at least six-feet of social distancing by participants and the latest procedures regarding ventilation in the courtroom.

Additionally, it includes consulting an epidemiologist to weigh in on best health practices to keep everyone inside the courtroom safe.
[.....]
Haobsh had agreed that his trial for this case can occur through May 2021.

The last day for trial is June 10, Hill said.

Haobsh’s next court date is set for January in Department 2 of the Superior Court in Santa Barbara.

This was a much appreciated update. Thank You.

As much as he may deserve the DP sentence, I now wish they wouldn't pursue that. In California it seems futile. So, are his Public Defenders Death Penalty qualified attorneys?

"The county District Attorney’s Office decided to pursue the death penalty in the case, which is being prosecuted by Hilary Dozer and Benjamin Ladinig."

"Haobsh had agreed that his trial for this case can occur through May 2021."

Death Penalty Trial for Pierre Haobsh Inching Closer

Nov. 2, 2020
The death-penalty murder trial for Pierre Haobsh —accused of killing noted Santa Barbara herbalist and acupuncturist Dr. Weidong “Henry” Han, 57; his wife, Huijie “Jennie” Yu, 29; and their 5-year-old daughter, Emily, in their home four years ago — has been assigned a last-day-for-trial date: June 10, 2021. Attorneys for the defense and prosecution will meet again in Judge Brian Hill’s courtroom on January 13 to discuss when to set an actual trial date.
[.....]
Because of the degree of premeditation alleged to have been involved — and the eight bullets shot into the head of Han’s daughter — District Attorney Joyce Dudley filed death penalty charges against Haobsh, the first and only time she has done so.
[.....]
Last week, Judge Hill announced that jury questionnaires would be sent out to no fewer than 2,000 prospective jurors for the case. During court deliberations prior to the outbreak of COVID, it had been estimated that the Haobsh trial — really two, one for guilt and the other for punishment — could take as long as 12 months.

Man Charged with Murdering Dr. Henry Han and Family Makes Court Appearance

May 20, 2021
A readiness and settlement conference for an Oceanside man accused of murdering a Santa Barbara doctor and his family in 2016 has been continued until June in Santa Barbara Superior Court.
[.....]
Haobsh was seated in a solo room at the Santa Barbara County Jail during the virtual court proceeding in Santa Barbara Superior Court on Thursday. He appeared on screen wearing an orange-colored County Jail shirt, blue pants and black glasses.
[.....]
Attorneys for both sides also participated remotely during the hearing held on the video conferencing service Zoom because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Haobsh is being represented by Public Defender’s Office attorneys Christine Voss and Michael Hanley.

Thursday’s hearing was finished in about three minutes after a date was set.

The next court date is a readiness and settlement conference scheduled for June 3 in Superior Court Judge Brian Hill’s courtroom.

“I assume Judge (Brian) Hill will be back on that day,” Voss told Superior Court Judge Michael Carrozzo, who presided over Thursday’s court hearing.

The last day for trial in the case against Haobsh is January 2022, Carrozzo said.
