It is a great article. I wonder why privacy issues prevent Suffolk DA from subpoena'ing Dr Ayres Judge Baker records? At the minimum, they could get a list of patients couldnt they? I mean, how are they handling the Bradley case-it's not like they are waiting for the patients to come forward...they are contacting them I believe.

Hmmmmmmm

Mercy, we can post links to the articles on City Data, Craigslist and topix in an attempt to find victims. I wonder if that would be helpful??

  • #102
Yes post the story everywhere. We need to spread the word.

  • #103
Believe--Can you expound a bit on the Craigslist issue. What are the rules and regulations of seeking other victims of a person who is either under indictment or already convicted?

I've thought that this would be an excellent way to reach victims who have yet to come forward. Many people believe that they are alone in their pain. When they learn that they are one of many, there's some comfort that they are blameless.

Look at the clergy abuse debacle. Once the victims started talking, it was a tidal wave.

New England Cable News Television is doing a segment on Ayres tonight
http://www.necn.com/

Broadside show with Jim Braude. 6:00 pm and 8:00 pm. Eastern Standart Time.

Guest is Boston lawyer Mitchell Garabedian who made a name for himself by representing the hundreds of victims of Father Geoghan (pedophile priest who was murdered in prison.) Garabadian will be talking about the Ayres case and the standard of care for doctors in Massachusetts. He will also be encouraging victims of Ayres in Boston.

Also, there is an interview with Victoria Balfour on the Ayres case on the NPR Boston station WBUR.

We've all been following the Ayres, Levine, Bradley, Foulk (Napa, CA state hospital chief), and Gajdusek cases. I thought I'd post another link here bringing us back to Gajdusek. I have been absolutely fascinated and repulsed about what I've read about the man--so many ethical questions about how we now view the work of these often great minds.

http://www.independent.co.uk/news/the-fall-of-a-family-man-1308277.html

August 1996

"The story of Daniel Gajdusek, the brilliant son of poor East European immigrants to the United States who was awarded the 1976 Nobel Prize for Medicine and Physiology, is more than the rags-to-riches rise and fall from grace of an eminence grise. His supporters - and there are many, including leading scientists and the children he brought up as his own, some of whom hold high-ranking government and diplomatic positions in their own countries - say he is the victim of the preoccupation with child abuse that has led to notorious scandals and miscarriages of justice such as Cleveland and the Orkney Isles cases here and Wenatchee in the US.

Others say Gajdusek is nothing more than a sex tourist who used his status as world-renowned scientist as a cover for his visits to exotic locations to procure children for his own pleasure. Then there are those of a more liberal persuasion who believe that our own hang-ups about sex should not be allowed to distort the very different cultural attitudes to sex displayed in other countries."

and

"For example, on 10 September 1961, while on Koror Island in the Pacific Ocean, he wrote: "I would, at this moment, have every youth sleep with his sister, get seduced by his older brother and male teacher, practise with his male and female cousins, aunts, uncles and teacher and maid - anything! - only to know sex as fun and frivolity, as rhythm and passionate play - from an early age - from the very onset of puberty."

and

"Dr Gajdusek was arrested and spent the night in jail before being released on $350,000 bail. He is forbidden from travelling outside the state and has not commented in any detail on the allegations, other than to tell the Washington Post that he was as much a paedophile "as Jesus Christ and Mother Teresa, who also are unmarried and love children".

and

Reports in American newspapers say Gajdusek brought the first child over some time in the mid-1960s, and that their numbers grew rapidly. He did not adopt them officially [ETA, finally answered that question] and the children entered the United States on study visas, which require little more than a sponsor who agrees to cover all costs.

and

"Larry Foust, of the FBI in Baltimore, said last week that the agency first became interested in him after an inquiry into child 🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬 on the Internet in the late 1980s. In October, the Maryland Circuit Court will decide if he is an innocent, well-meaning eccentric whose old age and lifetime achievements have been destroyed by witchhunting authorities, or a paedophile masquerading as a dedicated scientist. A more pertinent question, which the court will not address, is this: how could the US Immigration authorities and social services permit so many young, foreign children to enter the country, largely unchecked, for so many years?"

Multiple entries in his private journals follow.

much more at link--a fascinating read.

From another source:

http://www.answers.com/topic/daniel-carleton-gajdusek

"Gajdusek was charged with child molestation in April 1996, based on incriminating entries in his personal diary and statements from a victim. He pleaded guilty in 1997 and, under a plea bargain, was sentenced to 12 months in jail. After his release in 1998, he was permitted to serve his five-year unsupervised probation in Europe. He never returned to the United States and lived in Amsterdam, Paris, and Tromso.

and

"Gajdusek died December 12, 2008 in Tromsø, Norway, at the age of 85. He was working and visiting colleagues in Tromsø at the time of his death."

I think that due to the time lapse, many have forgotten this important case. It bears many similarities to some of the others we are discussing. We have a man, a brilliant man, who ordered his life in such a way, to have a steady stream of boys and young men at his disposal. He minimized the sexual contact, even calling it playlike and healthy. (Sidenote: NAMBLA has a piece on Gajdusek but it has been taken down). He was able to garner awards and praise for his philanthropic work with children and develop a public reputation as an upstanding model for males. In fact, he duped many highly respected people into defending him against even overwhelming evidence.

One has to wonder what has become of the young men he raised who are now said to hold high ranking positions of power in far-flung countries? If they truly look back on their relationship with their "father" as one filled with sex-fueled love, what atrocities might they be committing in the name of love and/or play? One has to also wonder how many children and teens he victimized after we released him unsupervised on Europe in 1998. Ten years in a long long time and pedophiles are fast.

Gajdusek's legacy truly haunts me. I'd love to hear Charlie Rose set Ayres, Levine, and Bradley at a table (leg irons, please) for a thorough discussion of this Nobel Laureate. No doubt he is their hero.

So, can I, as a private citizen post on Craigslist seeking other victims of indicted or convicted sex abusers?

  • #109
hearing that massachsuttets wants in on the investigation doesnt give me much hope, considering we treat people who run over ducks worse then we do pedophiles here.

A very thorough treatise on the motives behind Gajdusek's adoptions. This is interesting as the scholar totally ignores or sets aside Gajdusek's conviction on sex abuse and goes on to explain in minute detail the glories of these "adoptions".

http://goliath.ecnext.com/coms2/gi_0199-7780451/Family-man-the-Papua-New.html

"The following discussion therefore leaves aside the conviction and potentially distracting questions about Gajdusek's sexuality in order to understand better why he adopted the children from PNG [ETA, Papua New Guinea]."

another interesting snip with a name to check out:

"The many other letters from friends, family and various proteges, also written to the judge in Gajdusek's 1997 trial, demonstrate that this was as much the case in the USA and elsewhere, as in PNG. For instance, Barry Adels, one of Gajdusek's American proteges, who eventually became a paediatrician and professor at Harvard Medical School, wrote that when he'd met Carleton, he (Barry) had been as 'poor and disadvantaged as they come, already a veteran of the juvenile court system' (Barry R and Jill Haak Adels to Judge G. Edward Dwyer, February 26, 1997). Adels says that Gajdusek became for him 'in stages and always by example never by edict, his mentor, his surrogate father, his friend and eventually his colleague...."

I have a feeling that Mr. Foulk's (of the Napa Hospital) motives would figure strongly into these same ambitions. Both men seem bent on reaching down to those less fortunate boys, either of Papua New Guinea or to the mean streets of California, and giving these boys a hand up. I have no doubt that if Ayres did not have Solveig by his side, there would be a cadre of boys living in the Ayres household. Dr. Silverman of Oregon managed it, even with a wife who was a psychiatrist in the same household.

I am going to email Sgt Donovan so he doesnt become confused as to why this stuff is popping up all over the place....

Believe--I'm so pleased you are doing this. I'm hopeful the same is being done with Levine and Foulk. We know that LE are looking for and even contacting possible Bradley victims. What I'm wondering is if any citizen has a right to post an ad looking for other victims of sex abusers who are either indicted or convicted (obviously not just anyone). I'm sure you can see where I'm going here.

I've been particularly saddened by the lack of adult victims to come forward concerning Dr. Silverman in Oregon. Granted, his victim base suffered from DD and cognitive disabilities but surely some of the many victims must still be around. He pleaded guilty to two counts but the DA was prepared to slap him with many more. He saw patients for decades and was known by his own psychiatrist to be a pedophile. Surely, there must be many many men in their mid-20's to late 30's who need closure.

And consider our case. We know with certainty that there were other children whose parents chose not to involve them. Now that they are adults, would they be able to contact authorities? One WS member contacted me about our case. This person was possibly groomed but not abused by this same young man. Imagine how many more there could be?

Just wondering. And thank you for the time you are putting into this. I'll be so interested to hear what Victoria Balfour has to say concerning this case.

Yes, private citizens can simply link Donovan's post on Craigslist. Several people have done this in the last few months.

FYI-Sgt Donovan will be retiring at the end of the month. His replacement at the Crimes AGainst Children Unit is:

ACU Supervisor Sgt. Det. Robin DeMarco at the office at 617-343-6183 or temporary desk phone 617-343-6404 or BPD cell phone 617-593-4070 or personal cell phnoe 617-877-3699, pager 617-343-7247,
email [email protected]

I would suggest contacting Donovan and Sgt DeMarco.

This is my perspective as a civilian-

I have put numerous missing/uid's on CL, City Data etc. Typically I reference a law enforcement contact, but also I offer the tipster the option of contacting me if they are intimidated about contacting LE.

In your particular case, where you are a plaintiff (presumably) or could be considered one, I am not sure if lines are being crossed. I think, personally and as a layperson, that you are entitled to beat the bushes regarding others who might have been victimized by the cases you are concerned about. But I would think carefully about how you choose to word you request-make sure that what you are writing is true. The posts I put up in this case simply recommend that patients contact BPD or Suffolk County DA.

  • #116
I just heard from Sgt Donovan-there is another lead on the case as well, so at his request I changed all of the contact info for the postings to SGT Det Robin DeMarco.

on a victim or a new head on the case? I know there 's a new head on the case.

I can give you my perspective as a victim of ayres, who initially made contact because of online postings:

As a victim, I was looking far and wide for information about ayres. In fact I had been looking through internet systems BEFORE html was invented. I was terrified to contact the police because I felt that I'd be ignored (crushing blow) or that they'd immediately make my information and accusations public, potentially ruining my life. Or I thought that they would be able to compel me to testify even if I decided that I didn't want to.

When finally the news of the civil suit, and later the criminal charges broke, finally I was able to find substantial information online. I'm going to leave out chunks of information for brevity here, but ultimately, I did make contact with a person who was looking for victims to contact the police. Eventually, I did contact the police.

At this point, I'm going to ask you NOT to necessarily draw any negative or positive conclusions about ANY of the people involved. That may be hard to do, and I'm not saying this as a deterrent, just as a point of fact that everyone should be aware of:

IN GENERAL, I think that prosecutors in these cases would prefer that the victim have had NO contact with outside sources, so that the case is VERY squeaky clean, and that the defense can't make implications that case information may have been transferred from witness to witness or from outsider to witness. Again... I'm NOT implying ANY kind of negative behavior about anyone, just stating what I PERCEIVE to be the case.

Unfortunately, I don't think the police or prosecutors do a very good job of up-front work in contacting potential victims.. (and they may not have the time/resources to do this) I would probably have gone directly to the police if they had made very public statements about how the process works, how privacy will be protected, etc, etc. Maybe even have a victim who has gone public describe how they were protected. Typically these police calls for information look like this to me: "Hey, if you let this dude take advantage of you, give us a call." Very institutional, very unproductive looking.

In reading this, even to myself, it seems overly hand-holdy. But, the reality is that in these kinds of cases there is NO trust left for any person in any position of authority. EVERYONE is out to make things worse... at least, that's the underlying fear that's going on with us. Yes... we are adults now, but trust was eradicated before we were teenagers, it's just not part of the psychological make up anymore. Honestly, I don't know if you can learn it when it's been gone for so long. Sometimes it is a minor consideration, but other times it is an irrational terrified fear. I KNOW that the police and prosecutors are not there to fix the damage done, but they're just not doing anything to remove the fear that they're going to make it worse.

SO am I saying DON'T allow the victim to contact you? Nope... not saying that. But I would suggest that any discussion be strongly pointed to whatever you can find out and relay about how the victim will likely be treated by the authorities, and that there are specific people in the various departments who are trained to deal with this kind of crap, and that dealing with it will probably make it better than just sitting on it.

Maybe not the best advice, but I think it's a good direction to start in.

I suspect that there are also those of us who want contact, but will never talk to the authorities. I know that this frustrates people, but I certainly understand why some of us feel this way, and I also think that it is possible that it's the correct path for some of us to follow.

i think it's pretty safe for us to draw conclusions on ayres.

all my sympathy for what you have been thru.

i dont think anyone here (i hope not) is blaming you or others for not coming foward sooner. at least that's what i think was implied in your post.
we here all know what a victim/survivor goes thru and the emotional toll it takes on you.

Thanks, and by the way... totally forgot to say:

I'm very glad that there are people out there who are willing (even eager) to do something about all of this kind of stuff. Often it becomes overwhelming when you're TOO close to it, so I'm glad that there are people who "get it" and want to stop it...
