Fred Cain III, the suspect arrested last week for the 1987 murder and abduction of a 6-year-old boy in Vallejo, is now a person of interest in the murder of 9-year-old Eric Coy in Martinez. The killings happened just weeks apart. https://abc7ne.ws/3rmIn4l

''Fred Marion Cain III, 69, was charged last week with murder during kidnapping and sexual assault in the February 1987 killing of Jeremy, who was abducted after leaving a relative’s home in Vallejo. The boy’s body was found days later on Sherman Island. Cain was linked to the crime through DNA, authorities said.

But now, authorities say they’re also looking at Cain as a suspect in Eric’s killing, an investigation that has drawn community shock, sympathy, and hundreds of tips to police over the past 35 years, yet remains unsolved. Eric was found dead in a creek near Martinez Junior High School on Jan. 25, 1987. He was riding his bike a few short blocks away from his home when an unknown assailant stabbed him 11 times.

There are obvious similarities between both slayings. They occurred within one month of each other. Jeremy was kidnapped from Vallejo, Eric from Martinez — two cities separated by about a dozen miles, over the Carquinez Strait. Both were stabbed.''

''A composite sketch of a possible suspect in the case was released by police a few days after the slaying. Police described the suspect as a Latino or Italian man with a light complexion, scars on his cheeks, black combed-back medium-length hair and “very piercing” dark eyes. He was about 18 to 21 years old, 5-foot-8 and about 165 pounds during the time of the killing''

''Eric Coy loved to ride his bicycle. The 9-year-old, who lived in Martinez, California, spent most of his free time on his BMX bike. On the morning of Saturday, January 24, 1987, he asked his father, Dan Coy, if he could ride his bike to his aunt’s home several blocks away. He was best friends with his cousin, Eddrick, and wanted to go to his house to play. He was given permission and left his house shortly before 11:00 am. He never made it to his aunt’s house; his body was found just 15 minutes later in a wooded area near his home.

Eric normally took a shortcut through the woods behind Martinez Junior High School to get to his aunt’s house; it was an area that was very familiar to all of the children in the neighborhood, who would frequently gather there to play in Alhambra Creek. Around 11:10 am, a 13-year-old boy who was cutting through the woods to get to a local boys and girls club saw Eric and his bike lying in a bush near the cement footbridge that crossed over Alhambra Creek. He assumed that Eric had crashed while riding his bike and immediately raced to the nearby club to get help.

He saw a group of teenagers playing basketball at the club and told them that Eric had fallen off his bike and needed help. Several of the teenagers accompanied him back to the area where he had found Eric. He then saw Eric and realized that the situation was serious. Eric was covered in blood and didn’t appear to be breathing.

As one of the teenagers got closer, he realized that they were dealing with something far more sinister than a bike accident. Eric’s throat had been slit.''
