Feb. 9 - Someone transferred $2,000 from Joseph’s bank account into his PayPal account.
I just want to say that when I make a payment using my Paypal account, if there isn't the money to cover it in the Paypal account, Paypal automatically takes the money from my bank account.

This could have been an automatic transfer, unless there is more information available to say it wasn't. That's the way Paypal works for me and as far as I know it's a requirement to have a linked bank account they can debit.

there's also this bit in the os -

They found that within 42 minutes of receiving that email from Joseph ‘hey I’ve overpaid you $42,845’ within 45 minutes within that hour Joseph’s QuickBooks was accessed. At 12.24 pm on February 1st – this was not done from any of the computers seized from the McStay residence – a vendor was added, charles merritt, all lower case.

Yeah, good luck explaining that LOL

What has strong smell, or stinks, especially when left on a counter or floor for some time?
*Broken eggs
*Used coffee grounds
*Popcorn
*Dirty diapers
All of these were found on first inspection of McStay home. I have always believed the killer put these out to mask death odors. Additionally, the killer painted some walls. Fresh paint odor masks a multitude of lingering smells.
What *I* thought, was that the coffee, popcorn and spoiled eggs, were all put out to stage the house and help to cover up any smell, like fresh paint (to cover up any splatter, from the murders).

But the smell of fresh paint wouldn't need to be masked, they had been painting for days already. jmo

The eggs could have also been brought out by one of the kids. This may also explain the broken eggs. Can't even count how many times my little ones would raid the refrigerator. My oldest used to get out the tub of butter or mayo and eat it by the spoonful. We ended up have to fasten a hasp and padlock on the door LOL.

I was watching Steers testimony last night. He said some of the eggs were broken. That would explain the bad smell. I'm curious to them being broken. But eggs are not only used for breakfast but many dishes throughout the day. We will often use them in dinner dishes if the cupboards are a bit lean. In my house we will even do 'breakfast for dinner'.

Coffee is also something consumed throughout the day. The defense is attempting to fool the jury of 12 adults that it's only for the morning. Anyone remember "J, did you just make the perfect latte, for Momma?". Those coffee grounds could have been from little Joseph, done at any time.

This gives me the courage to confess that it never occurred to me that “the eggs were out” meant that something happened in the morning. And it also never occurred to me that “coffee made” could set the timeline to morning.

That's how we use Paypal too, it is connected with our bank, make a payment with PayPal, and basically PayPal covers it until it comes from your bank account (this may have had a dollar limit though) But you could also transfer money into your PayPal account so you would have a balance in your PayPal account, which is what I think that $2000 was. It was probably done to avoid some sort of fee or because of a limit. I worked online back then... e-wallets used to charge a fee to do direct payments, if you transferred the money into your account (PayPal or other e-wallet) you could avoid those fees. I was going to go check paypal's site, but 9 years later, I'm thinking things have changed a bit lol

oh my... when they first went missing... the eggs were a huge topic of discussion. Whether they should have been in the fridge or left out, who would do what, what time of the day they would be out... it shocked me, amazing how many thought eggs were only for morning and no one ever left them on the counter.

So it was JM’s email to CM asking for his 42k back that instigates the very first QB access by CM on 1st - within 45 mins in fact! I assume that IP addresses have been accessed and recorded by SBSD which prove those cheques were written from CM’s computer. Apart from the ones he ruthlessly wrote on 4th from their computer after he killed them. Still can’t get past that.

Two great minds.

The defense is asking the jury to put away their brains and agree that the family was abducted with their toilet mats in daylight during breakfast, which Summer wasn't preparing because she was busy painting her own bra - the morning after Joey had printed and deleted a cheque to Chase after a mystery truck backed into the driveway just sloped away into the night.

bbm What makes you think that's what it was?

I heard that Dan withdrew $2000 from the Paypal account. If it's the same payment, if he had authority to transfer money from Joey's bank account he could have just transferred it to his bank account, cutting out the need to transfer to Paypal and out of Paypal.

Unless Joey had set it up in advance to go through on that date.

The wording makes me think it's that: Someone transferred $2,000 from Joseph’s bank account into his PayPal account

Now, I'm not sure where exactly this info came from and how it was worded originally, but if it was worded like above, it says it right there, bank account into his paypal account.

I don't know exactly how to word this, but I will try ... lol If someone, let's say DK, somehow had access to Joey's paypal account but not his bank account, it would be a way to access the funds. A paypal account is automatically associated with a bank account when you verify it, so there is no need to put in bank info, it's already there and you just have to make the request. The info that is in paypal couldn't have been used to access the bank independent of PayPal, at least I would hope not (might be able to see account number though?)

I am also unsure if payments can be scheduled in PayPal? Anyone know? Another question... was Joey's PayPal just a personal account? a merchant account?

This is from the PayPal site and I believe is something that has not changed since 2010:

Adding money
You may use the payment methods linked to your PayPal account to fund transactions you make using your PayPal account and you don’t need a PayPal balance to buy something or send money. You can transfer money to your PayPal account from a credit card, Visa debit card, or bank account that’s linked to your PayPal account by requesting an electronic transfer to your PayPal account. The amount transferred will be held as a balance in your PayPal account.

Exactly. It's all really ridiculous IMO.

I really can't wait to see some of the paypal, quickbooks, cell information... maybe Dan wasn't being as shady as we have been lead to believe over the years LOL IIRC even PayPal tried to fight their search warrant, I wonder why?

The more I learn about CM's activities during the days surrounding the McStay family's murders, it is scary to think of what occurred during those frenzied days. Did he plan ahead or did he go into a rage the night of February 4th? Engaging with MSM employees, Joey's family, banks, cleaning in their house when someone could come to their door or look through their windows at any time, disposing of their bodies, driving their Trooper to the border knowing if he gets stopped his gig is over, and so forth and so on.

Force Ten, you posted about CM having Baker's book and writing notations in it. Do you know what CM wrote?

Yes he requested it and it was released by Mike or Susan. How they did that is still unknown. DK said it went to vendors and welders. Sequieda said his dad talked to Dan over the phone. I don't recall when that was.

It's never been reported what he wrote. I think.

Yes I agree about the wording but I'm just proposing that could be an erroneous interpretation of what may have been an automatic transfer to paypal to cover a paypal payment. I think it unlikely Joey gave anyone authority to use his bank account and banks are usually pretty stringent on account security. It's a possibility though.

Dan had access to Joey's emails though, right? He could have gained access that way (forgot password button maybe?) How did he have access to his emails? Was it connected to EIP website or was it a different email addy? I recall early on that he said "emails were piling up", how would he know that unless he had access to emails.

I don't think anyone has been able to pinpoint when Sequieda Sr. spoke to Dan... defense keeps implying that it was before the family disappeared (he called and wanted to know why Joey was paying them or something like that, implying that DK had access to the QB's and was looking at them before the 4th), but Jr. and Carmen couldn't say when in their testimony.

I haven't followed all the details of the events the day they went missing. I mean, I know about Joey and the alleged lunch meeting with Chase. Also know bits and pieces of Summer's day. Who is to say she didn't just get busy with the kids and errands and never cleaned up that morning? I remember, back in the day, letting things slide until the end of the day. Do we know that she was even painting that day? Maybe after getting home she gave the boys some popcorn to tide them over before dinner? Then decided to get them bathed and ready for bed before they ate?
I have followed this for so long that much seems to run together for me. Too much time lost getting to trial. And, I tend to glaze over with cell phone pings and quick books. I am the worst to be following a trial. I go on gut and emotion.
