Oh shoot! I’m new here and try to search threads with the “find on page” function and didn’t see that Jane Doe mentioned yet but I’m sure I missed it somewhere. Thanks for taking the time to respond!
No worries. I am not entirely certain it was, just seems familiar, Welcome to websleuths!

If you remember, drop the link to the match NAMUS or Charley or other similar profile page you are making when you post. It helps a lot to be able to quickly take a look and compare relevant info for the match suggestions. Sadly there are so many missing and so many UIDs, I know I cannot keep everyone straight.

I did make the suggestion on Reddit but never got a response on my submission so I was wondering if others here thought it was worthy of submitting again.

I don’t know why it’s not saving the link in my post! I know I inserted it in there in top of the “Placer Jane Doe” text. I had even seen it didn’t work after I initially posted it and it allowed me to edit it and insert it again but yet now when I look at the post again it’s not there? Was it because I used a wiki link and not Namus? I like the wiki links because they have all the sources at the bottom but I’ll try Namus only next time. Ok sorry for the long ramble thanks for listening to me / trying to help!

I say go ahead and submit it. Nothing is lost by doing so, right?

Not sure why a link would disappear. If we use an unapproved source usually a mod will let you know. I'm not aware of a Wiki being something that would be automatically deleted. In my experience in the past links were usually removed if people were quoting random personal blogs vs approved mainstream media sources for current cases. i.e. situations where you would have a lot of rampant speculation about a case that was rapidly changing/progressing. Social media rumors, stuff like that.

Placerville looks like a fairly small town. I might be way off base, but if the population was even smaller in the 70s, and the grandfather was a local doctor, there may have also been concern about reputation and social standing in the community of they thought she was involved in anything "questionable" ? Small towns can be weird, even today. Maybe there was already tension and it gossip with her in foster care?

Speculation by me, of course. Just thinking of reasons why he wouldn't want publicity.
Placerville was very small in the '70's. I lived pretty close as far as the crow flies. I remember when they got a Burger King. The town was and really still is pretty cool.

  • 1970 Census: 5,416
  • 1980 Census: 6,739
So it really does seem like the kind of place where "everyone" would know the students in the local high school, especially if related to a local Doctor. Maybe someone out there is still alive and remembers something and eventually comes across Julie being reported missing.

Returning to family thinking on this case; Julie's father seems to have died in 2020 and, like his father's obit from 2007, makes no mention of Julie. To be fair, the obituary only refers to his last wife and his parents and siblings, so it is possible all other family members (or former family members) were omitted simply because of the type of obituary. I have to say that having read the obituary I rather liked the sound of him. Anyone who gets sacked as a teacher in the early 60s for teaching 'Catcher in the Rye' and goes on to be arrested with Martin Luther King in Selma seems to be interesting and have some good qualities.

Looking at the various Ancestry records Julie seems to have been the daughter of a young relationship (her mother was listed as a student in Sacramento in 1961 when they married) and the marriage was in Carson City. So a rather old fashioned family (and I do not know if they were) may have not been happy and may explain the reluctance to talk.

None of this takes matters further, but it may provide some context to family attitudes.
Agreed. I think I would have liked to talk to Julie’s dad. I wonder if he ever thought of his daughter, tried to get her listed as a missing person?
