With no further information to go on, and him being found so soon after being reported missing (even though we didn't hear about it until much later), it really sounds to me like he fell out of the trailer. And if they were traveling from Logandale to Oakdale, and he was found near Delhi, what a shame, they were almost at their destination.

Was it just the two of them traveling together? Was he alone in the trailer? I'd be interested in seeing a representative photo of a similar trailer just to get an idea of how plausible falling out actually is.

If it's the kind of trailer with a small living quarters like the kinds I've seen at the Fort Worth Stock Show & Rodeo - All it would take was hitting a bump hard and falling out a door that may not have been properly secured. The driver pulling the trailer wouldn't have any idea if this had happened since there is no "door alarm" connected to the pulling vehicle.

Many examples can be seen here: Used Horse Trailers w/Living Quarters

I know a guy who that happened to years back. He was riding in the trailer to keep the horses calm when they hit a pothole. He stumbled against the back of the trailer and his weight caused the doors to pop open. Fortunately it was a lightly traveled road and he wasn't seriously injured.
