To me that's close, but not what is in my minds eye. They used to be called "wife-beaters", have been around for decades, and are thin & ribbed.
A "wife-beater"...is an old fashion, sleeveless undershirt... The "wife-beater" shirt isn't some nouveau tank top. It's the ribbed undershirt once worn only by granddads and Stanley Kowalski in A Street Car Named Desire.

What is a less controversial name for the clothing item known as a "wife-beater" in the United States?
In the United States, a white sleeveless shirt is often referred to as a "wife-beater". Typically I try to avoid using "wife-beater" due to its negative connotation. I've tried using a few differentenglish.stackexchange.com

In my family, this is known as an A-shirt, shaped more like an A than a T-shirt. The above picture is NOT my family, although I am certain those gentleman are very nice & good sports about have an underwear pic all over the Internet.
I wear them as a camisole in cool weather and under itchy sweaters!
Possible TMI: Covers your tummy and vertical C-section scar when wearing low-waisted jeans & a top that might ride up.
