I find it a strange argument that many are apologizing for law enforcement because they don’t have the right equipment or specialized knowledge. That’s what they’re paid for, that’s why they are The Professionals!

This wasn’t just some underfunded local deputy without the right equipment! This was a massive search with federal and state and local authorities and special search and rescue teams for water and air.

Why are taxpayers spending millions of dollars for federal investigators and state investigators and search and rescue teams and local investigators and airplanes and helicopters and boats and scuba, if it’s all ineffective?

When a few dudes with side sonar can find it in a few minutes?! Personally, I find all the hundreds of people and thousands of hours devoted on this case a HUGE embarrassment and a waste of taxpayer dollars, when volunteers can solve it in a few minutes.
Same thing happened in Michigan to the young boy who had left a party. It's not an apology, it's a fact. Local PD's are funded by local dollars and most can't even afford cars and heat sensors. Very little federal funds go to local or state PD's. Sonar equipment is very expensive, and hard to get a town or state to fund if it's only used once in a great while. It's great that we have groups like this and other groups that are able to help LE with equipment that sometimes tax payers can't afford.

Good question by a reporter about what gear the vehicle was found in. LE not saying anything about the vehicle until the investigation is complete.

He certainly took a big pause before answering! I'll chalk it up to him doing a mental "am I allowed to answer this question" check.

I think it was more of a pause that meant YGBKM.

One of Doug Bishop's posts specifically mentioned they were searching based on confidential information. But I believe they searched other bodies of water in Truckee (including Boca) first. It would be interesting to know what the confidential info was.
Do you happen to have a link?

autopsy tomorrow. Tox 4-6 weeks

I had trouble hearing the questions. Regarding what gear it was in, I imagine he responded that he was unable to answer that at this time?

No information will go public until the investigation is over. There is no reason to believe something sketchy is going on bc they wont talk about it. It's the same with every single investigation. I'm annoyed that they keep asking the same questions. No matter how you word it you wont get whatever answer you're looking for.

Higher

The water levels in the reservoir had been higher two weeks ago during previous police searches, Rinn added.

“Now the water has receded and we’re seeing the vehicle went farther into the water than maybe [police] thought,” he said. “When a vehicle goes in the water, it has air trapped in it for a while so it will float for a little ways before it fills with water and sinks.”

The car and body were found about 20 to 40 feet from the water’s edge near a section of Prosser Family Campground where the party was held. The area is known to locals as “The Sanctuary” and overlooks the Prosser Creek Reservoir.
Ah. Thank you. I couldn't remember exactly my bad. I just knew it mentioned that it was different and car went further.

As soon as I heard that Adventures had found the car and body I knew that this thread would be flooded with second guessers who think that the police were negligent. i have never heard of a police department that was equipped with sonar and the type of equipment that Ad ventures has. No way that a town, county, or city would tolerate very expensive equipment like that sitting around for years without it ever being used which would be the case.

While unpleasant also consider that this girl would have been just as dead if she was found in ten minutes.

Wow, ~400 juveniles were identified (to speak with).

Possibly an even bigger party than had been said. But I’d guess that the 400 includes anyone who knew Kiely, even if they weren’t at the party.

Yeah, I caught that too and wondered why he had to pause. It doesn't take long to count to 1 (body)!

Regarding the toxicology question and that results could take some weeks, I wish someone had also asked whether tomorrow's autopsy could determine whether water could be found in her lungs after all this time. I expect though only the ME could answer that.

Respectfully, I think this is false. Nevada County's "public protection" budget (police and related) is almost 90 million dollars and comprises 30% of their total spending. 21-22 Budget

This budget is for a county with ~102,000 people.

You are correct

You need me to wonder if anyone or anything else was located nearby? (I'm always wondering these things! )

I think they all seem extremely professional and thorough. Top notch all around, IMO. Extremely sad, but if anything weird went down, they will find out.

The CHP's MAIT team is very good. In the 1990's my employers son disappeared. His car was found submerged in the Sacramento River. MAIT determined that it wasn't an accident and the case was a murder. His murder was featured on an episode of Forensic Files. I have confidence that the MAIT team will be able to recreate what happened to Kiely. JMO

I don't think we have to be critical or mean to hope that LE will consider learning from this experience and improving their effectiveness and efficiency. If you consider the massive cost of the fruitless search effort here and in some other cases, it's hard to imagine that wasn't vastly more expensive than getting the equipment and training that AWP has.

There's a difference between blaming and criticizing, which I agree is not helpful, and learning from experience to do better next time.

Doesn't that include firemen , paramedics, and assorted inspectors including building and food inspectors? Nevada County has a massive fire named the Pleasant Fire with evacuations. That budget would also cover evacuations which results in huge amounts of overtime.

The search for missing Northern California girl Kiely Rodni came to a sad conclusion on Monday when law enforcement officials said remains found in a submerged car are "more than likely" the 16-year-old.

The California Highway Patrol is investigating the matter as an accident, officials said.

The vehicle was found Sunday in Prosser Lake, in Truckee about 35 miles west of Reno, Nevada, by Adventures With Purpose, a private collective of divers who had been helping in the search...
