A Calabasas city official confirmed to NBC:

Kobe Bryant was among those killed in the 10 a.m. crash northwest of Los Angeles.

Bryant's 13-year-old daughter, Gianna, and a teammate on her basketball team also were on board the helicopter.

The teammate's parent and pilot also were killed.

OMG what a horrible shock- he is one of those athletes that transcended the sport he played: I am also sad that his teenage daughter Gigi was on that plane with him---of course condolences to all who were killed on that helicopter. Just terribly shockind and sad news.

@Gardenista you were right - there is video purporting to be the crash. Hard to say if it's legit, but a child can be heard crying after watching it. Sad.

I was just coming to post this, wow. His daughter Gianna, 13, two other passengers and the pilot were also killed. There were no survivors. (UPDATE NINE WERE ON BOARD.)

NBA legend Kobe Bryant and his daughter were among five people killed in a helicopter crash in Calabasas, California, on Sunday, a source confirmed to ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski. Bryant was 41.

Bryant was on his way to a travel basketball game with his daughter Gianna Bryant, who was 13, when the helicopter crashed, sources told Wojnarowski. Those aboard the helicopter also included another player and parent and the pilot. According to the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department, there were no survivors. An investigation is ongoing.

EDIT Sheriff says NINE were on board.

The helicopter crashed and burst into flames in the hills above Calabasas.

Jerry Kocharian was standing outside the Church in the Canyon drinking coffee when he heard a helicopter unusually low struggling overhead. “It [didn’t] sound right and it was real low. I saw it falling and spluttering. But it was hard to make out as it was so foggy,” Kocharian said. The helicopter vanished into a cloud of fog and then there was a boom.
