Presser: on my local news now
Safety investigator speaking first
Began with establishing parties that will investigate
Operations & human performance, air traffic controller , air design, flight plans, weather, looking for public with photos of the area & crash to contact them,
They went to the scene with drones, mapping, photos , collecting evidence
FBI is helping collect evidence...no criminal portion to this...they often help.

More presser:
Flight path info ....helicopter under VFR
Under Burbank control pilot requested ——
ATC advised there was waiting
Pilot circled for 12 minutes
Transferred South then West
Pilot was advised he was too low for flight follow
Pilot was climbing to avoid cloud layer
When asked what do you plan to do?
Controller lost contact
Pilot began left turn

She’s describing 3 debris fields when asked how it landed
Debris field total is 500 to 600ft.
Sheriff said they are using old school officers on horseback to protect the area.He also said something about restricted air space ...

(Sorry I missed the abbreviation tech stuff)

NTSB will be in LA investigating on site this week collecting perishable evidence only -- they do not make a determination of accident cause of a crash on site.

There was no black box required on the helicopter and no box on this craft.

LA County sheriff had to resort to officers on horseback to keep out thieves and prevent loitering on the crash scene. The crash was on public lands -- Sheriff warns offenders will be arrested.

Another presser by NTSB will be held Tuesday. Check with link below for schedule.

To be clear, the Pilot was advised he was too low for "flight follow" not to be confused with pilot was too low to the terrain.

Flight follow means radar communication assistance by ATC. Flight follow was restored by the pilot craft within 4 minutes of ATC notification.

This is not unusual when flying SVFR (special visual flight rule).

Pilot granted permission for SVFR which allows flying lower than VFR.

Pilot received clearance to fly under fog conditions.

Sheriff Alex Villanueva was on KNBC Channel 4 this morning expressing his condolences to the families of each of the victims in the helicopter crash in Calabasas, "We have to remember people the way they were...there was nine people on that aircraft, each one had their own set of family, friends and acquaintances... this tragedy is going to last a long time..."

TY! Corrected ( added) it.

Kobe Bryant helicopter pilot tried climbing just before 'devastating' crash, NTSB says

Jan 27, 2020

Just before crashing into a Calabasas hillside, the pilot of Kobe Bryant’s helicopter rapidly ascended to avoid a cloud layer, the National Transportation Safety Board said Monday.

Jennifer Homendy, an NTSB member, said the pilot flying from Orange County to Ventura County requested special visual flight rules, which allow pilots to fly under 1,000 feet. A marine layer had settled over the region Sunday morning and some areas were shrouded in fog.

Homendy said it remained unclear why the helicopter slammed into the hillside. Debris from the crash was scattered across 600 feet, she said.

“It was a pretty devastating accident scene,” she added.

Firefighters responding to a 911 call at 9:47 a.m. Sunday found a debris field in steep terrain with a quarter-acre brush fire. Paramedics arriving by helicopter searched the area but found no survivors.

After listening to the NTSB presser and the stats on the debris field, I don't think this looks like controlled flight into terrain. I think the tail may have clipped the terrain during the 180 turn (fast) causing the very sudden and seemingly uncontrolled descent and spiral into the hillside. MOO

Paul Cline, an assistant professor of aviation at the City University of New York, told New York Magazine that flying under IFR could mean you could be in a holding pattern for 'an hour'.

'You’re just one of many waiting in line, and it doesn’t matter if you’re Kobe Bryant,' Cline added. 'A ton of rules come into play, and people don’t always want to fly that way [under IFR]. It takes away their ability to do whatever they want to do,' Cline said. 'The trade-off is you get to live.'

The aircraft continued under VFR and around 9.40am it turned west to follow US Route 101, the Ventura Highway. At about 9.44am, the helicopter turned again, toward the southeast, and climbed to more than 2,000 feet, in what appeared to be an attempt to put some space between the helicopter and the high terrain.

[..]

'When you ask for a special VFR [visual flight rules], which they did, only one aircraft is allowed in the airspace,' he said.

'You can hear the controller saying that it had an "ad go around," that means an aircraft already cancelled its landing because of low visibility.'

It then descended and crashed into the hillside at about 1,400 feet, according to data from Flightradar24.

When it struck the ground, the helicopter was flying at about 184mph and descending at a rate of more than 4,000 feet per minute, the data showed.

The chopper went down in Calabasas, about 30 miles northwest of downtown Los Angeles. Bryant's chopper was only 17 miles from the Mamba Sports Academy when the crash occurred.

Thanks Seattle1. Now that MSM is using it, it's fine to link to and discuss VASAviation.

VAS Aviation has a newer video up now, where the site owner shows the original video of the flight path (including ATC to pilot comm) as he provides very helpful information about what is going on, and how to interpret the various terms used throughout.
