A 9-year-old Otay Mesa girl abducted from her front yard in 1991 was probably "incapacitated" by the time she was fatally stabbed at a business park three miles away, a crime scene reconstructionist said Friday.

Laura Arroyo was most likely sexually assaulted in a car before being carried to the murder scene in Chula Vista, where she was hacked with a gardening tool and stabbed a number of times, Rod Englert testified.

Manuel Bracamontes, a 41-year-old former neighbor, could face the death penalty if convicted of kidnapping and killing the third-grader around 9 p.m. on June 19, 1991.

A man linked to the 1991 murder of a 9-year-old former neighbor through DNA evidence was convicted Friday of kidnapping, molesting, stabbing and suffocating the Otay Mesa girl a week after moving away.

After 2 1/2 days of deliberations, the seven-woman, five-man jury found Manuel Bracamontes guilty of first-degree murder and three special circumstance allegations in the June 19, 1991, killing of Laura Arroyo.

Bracamontes was also convicted of assault with a deadly weapon for trying to run down a peace officer as authorities tried to arrest him years after the crime.

The fate of a 42-year-old man who kidnapped, molested and killed his 9-year-old neighbor is in the hands of a jury.

Manuel Bracamontes was convicted earlier this month of kidnapping, sexual assault and first-degree murder with special circumstance allegations in the June 1991 death of Laura Arroyo. The victim disappeared from her San Diego home one night, and her bloodied body was discovered the next morning on a sidewalk in front of a business complex three miles away.

I only hope that the family now feels a little comfort knowing that this case has finally reached a closure and that the man who so brutally acted upon their little daughter won't get the chance to do so with any other victims, ever again. So sad, so tragic .

DNA Evidence Linked Bracamontes To Killing

SAN DIEGO -- A man who kidnapped, sexually assaulted and suffocated a 9-year-old South Bay girl more than 14 years ago was sentenced to death Wednesday.

Manuel Bracamontes, 42, was convicted Sept. 2 of first-degree murder and special circumstances in the June 19, 1991, killing of Laura Arroyo. The same jury that found Bracamontes guilty recommended the death penalty -- a recommendation accepted by Superior Court Judge John Thompson.

Bracamontes was arrested in October 2003 after a DNA match was made from sperm taken from the victim's body, Peed said.

"I didn't kill that girl," Bracamontes said in court Wednesday. "You guys resolved nothing."

Five witnesses testified they saw Bracamontes at the girl's condominium complex the night she disappeared. Until a week before her death, he had lived in a unit across the way with his then-girlfriend, Maggie Porter, whom he married while awaiting trial, and their children.
