GUILTY CA - Lawrence 'Larry' King, 15, fatally shot at Oxnard school, 12 Feb 2008

Shouldn't the parents take some blame themselves? Didn't they notice he was going to school in make-up and feminine clothes? Why would they let him leave wearing something they thought the school would dis-allow anyway?
I'm just assuming they knew. The article doesn't say anything about them NOT knowing.

VENTURA, California — The family of a gay teenager who was fatally shot in class blames the school district for allowing their son to wear makeup and feminine clothing to school — factors the family claims led to the death.
The parents and brother of 15-year-old Larry King of Oxnard filed a personal injury claim against the Hueneme school district seeking unspecified damages for not enforcing the dress code, The Ventura County Star reported.
King, an eighth-grader at E.O. Green Junior High School, was shot in February. Classmate Brandon McInerney pleaded not guilty to the shooting last week. He was charged as an adult and also faces a charge of a committing a hate crime.

I think there is already a thread for Larry somewhere. Not sure if it should be merged or not.

If I remember correctly, I don't think that Larry lived with his family at the time of the shooting. Actually, now that I look at the whole article, it says that he was living at a shelter. So his parent's probably DIDN'T know about the way he was dressing. But this lawsuit against the school isn't the way to go. Unless the dress code specifically says "Girls can wear makeup and boys can't", I don't see it going anywhere. Larry's death was a horrible thing, but the one responsible is the other student who pulled the trigger.

Exactly! I hope that point is never forgotten...

I wonder why a 15 year old was living in a shelter instead of with his family?

I wonder why a 15 year old was living in a shelter instead of with his family?

Me too.

I also think that a 15-year-old male should be able to wear "female" clothing and/or other adornment to school if he chooses.

My prayers that one day we will have a world free from this type of fear.

I guess that is a possibility. I would think that not many 15-year-olds are in shelters without good reason.
I agree...when I posted this I didn't know about the kid being a shelter...
My dad once sent me to a run-away kids shelter for dating a person of another race. It was VERY humiliating to ride up to high school in what EVERYONE knew as the "wild-kid.abused kid" van.

For whatever reason, the parents were unwillling or unable to care for their son at home so what makes them feel they're entitled to anything? I feel bad for the boy, doesn't sound like he ever had much of a chance to be happy. May he be at peace now.

Larrys Auntie is a poster and she will see this.
Please, be kind.
NONE of this is Larrys fault! He was just Larry.
HE didn't bring a gun to school to murder anyone.

I don't know who you were replying too (maybe the post went poof)...I don't see any posts blaming Larry, just questioning the validity of the lawsuit....It seems to me the parents would have a better suit suing the school for not having metal detectors (assuming the weapon was brought into school?).

A murderer is a murderer. He would have found a victim sooner or later. Its just sad no one saw the signs.

I just meant in general. :(

It does sound as though makeup and femmine attire were hot button issues with the parents since there seems to be other issues they could have used for the suit. And I wonder if they didn't have other issues with the school? If the attire was the issue, then why not sue the shelter he was in- they permitted him to go to school dressed like that.

I agree that kids should be able to wear what they wish to school, as long as what they wear doesn't promote an illegal activity and it covers them. And if he knew what his sexual preference was at that age, then good for him. Some kids aren't sure at that age.

This young man was living in a shelter? And then I imagine he was ridiculed and made fun of at school, probably on a daily basis. How very sad! And what a senseless waste!

Oh how I pray that one day all people will learn to look at all other people and see what's on the inside of that person, get to know the person, and also understand that we are all unique and that we are all different.

The responsible person is the one that shot Larry, and most likely, so are the ones that raised the killer! This is a crime of hate, and hate isn't born, it is learned.

Children learn what they live.

"Several students said King and a group of boys, including the defendant, had a verbal confrontation concerning King's sexual orientation a day before the killing."

"Lawrence King was gunned down Tuesday by his Oxnard classmate. King, an eighth grader at E.O. Green Junior High School, was teased at school because of the effeminate way he dressed."

The boy who was killed was the one being bullied by other children at his school. These links should clarify that.
Perhaps it has gotten mixed up on this post who was being bullied and who was doing the bullying. Hopefully this clears it up.
I feel horrible for this young man who lost his life, his family could have cared less about him, and they won't even reveal their names. He suffered for who he was.

Excellent post MeoW..............................
except this part (bolded)
Greg King loved(s) his adopted child Larry. He loved him with all his heart.
That much I do know.

Rest In Peace Larry. You are loved and not forgotten. Huge butterfly wings for you honey.:beats::beats::beats:

No, it doesn't clear up the issue. I would also like to hear young McInerney's SIDE of the matter. He is the accused but we have NOT heard from him. We have only heard his accusers. Does that clear up my meaning ?

My grand daughter is in middle school and NO ONE is allowed to wear high heeled boots to school whether they are male or female. I highly doubt that is within any school code. Also I will still say a 14 year old SHOULD NOT be charged as an adult. Unfortunately he is a white student/person and there will be NO marches to get his ruling lowered to juvenile court which in my opinion is a really sad state in this country. :banghead:

The killer sat by Larry in the computer lab, stood up and shot Larry in the back of the head. I guess that wasn't enough because the killer decided to shoot a second bullet in to the back of Larrys head.
All Larry was doing at the time was sitting in his seat.
The killer is a killer and should be treated as such.IMO
