Leila Fowler Family Press Conference Scheduled

(Valley Springs, CA) The parents of Leila Fowler have requested to make a prepared statement to the media and to the residents of Calaveras County. A press conference will be held May 14, 2013 at 3:30 p.m. The location of the conference will be the Valley Springs Sheriff’s Substation, located at 200 Highway 12, Valley Springs, CA.

I wonder if they will take questions.

If they are having the PC at the substation, and they seem to be working with LE on it, I don't think they are going to claim the son is innocent.

I just read the neighbor recanted her statement and like someone had mentioned some people called the brother a bully. Based on what I have read so far there are no examples to support that he is a bully. What I mean is he could have been a mean brother who was relentlessly teasing and cruel to his siblings and/or the mean kid on the playground. Sibling violence is the most common and least reported type of familial violence.

Not to make light of the situation but this is the only example I can think of. In the movie "Billy Madison" there was a family that had a kid in every grade and they would always say, "O'Doyle rules!" It was indicated the dad was a mean bully. My point is that the mean kids in school often have something going on at home be it abuse, neglect or poor role models. I am not blaming the parents because I do not know and recognize that the long-awaited movement to address bullying has led to some people using the term loosely.

This statement from the link you posted puts the whole thing in a different perspective.

"Before Leila's death, the boy's middle school in Valley Springs suspended him for five days after he brought a small pocketknife to school, according to one of the boy's classmates. That account was backed up by a school administration source."

I got a note for sending chapstick to school with my son. A 12 year old knows what you can and cannot do or bring to school. I was taken aback by the chapstick thing but even when I was in school knives were a big no no; right along with drugs. Him bringing it to school does suggest some level of delinqunecy. Thanks for the link.

I don't buy that this was a run of the mill sibling disagreement, like over the TV or video games, etc. Sadly, the theory that he may have been abusing L. & she threatened to tell makes a lot of sense to me.
I also don't buy that this 12yo is in any way, a 'regular/normal/average' kid. A child doesn't suddenly snap & violently stab a sibling 21 times. Siblings fight & maybe hit or kick each other, pull hair, or push. Not only did the 12yo have to somehow obtain a knife (walk to the kitchen?), he had to stab her over 20 times. Not once did he come to his senses? Not once did he stop to think? He could have stabbed her a couple of times, come to his senses, & stopped. She might have lived. Stabbing someone 21 times takes time & physical effort. L. would have been screaming & fighting for her life.
21 times. I have no sympathy for this 12yo. I have huge doubts whether evil of this magnitude, of juvenile age or not, can be rehabilitated.
RIP, little L. I can't imagine the suffering you went through. :(

I posted below a news item that he was suspended from school this year for possession of a knife.

So, it's possible that he was carrying the knife around with him.

FWIW I'm getting a budding psychopath vibe off this kid, looks like more is coming out. Press conference should be interesting. Still .. the parents could not have seen THIS coming, but I guess I should reserve my judgement until we get a fuller picture.

On the facebook discussion, can someone paraphrase what that was .. did the stepmom let biomom have it? Also is biomom a previous partner of BF and IF and LF his natural children? Not that it matters, just curious.

I have to say, in all the photos and video there's something about this kid that just jumps right off the page. He really stands out from everyone else around him whether he's looking right at the camera or not.

The adult brother of a 12-year-old California boy accused of killing his 8-year-old sister said Monday the family was in shock and extremely sad about the arrest of the boy.

"We're just in a fog," J***** Fowler, 19, told The Associated Press.

J***** Fowler said the family was having a hard time coping with what is now a double tragedy.

"We're just trying to stay positive, but it's hard," he said.

I am interested to knowing the exact dates of this knife incident.

He only went to school for one day...I believe it was said he was at school the first day after the murder (Monday). I curious as to why he didn't want to go to school. You would think he would love all the attention he would get.

Wait a second...I thought Justin was 17? So I guess if he's an adult, we can use his name now? Anyway, it doesn't sound like he's denying it.

IIRC, it was reported with a link i believe, upthread, that a donor covered LF's funeral expenses.

But I can imagine other needs for money besides IF's defense: The cost of staying elsewhere during the investigation (even if staying at relative's, there's food, gas, etc), possible leave of absence without pay from job or jobs, and the cost of moving- i can only imagine never, ever wanting to go back to that house again.

Fowlers move back into Rippon Road home, relative says

Neighbors also witnessed officers removing a lot of things from the Fowler home. They haven't seen the family at all since the day Leila Fowler died. On Sunday, Leila and I****'s paternal grandfather said he didn't know what to think about his grandson's arrest.

"I don't know what to think. They had been trying to make a case for awhile now," said Dennis Fowler. "It's been really hard on the family."

I kind of wonder if some family members are....almost relieved...that IF is going to be put away? I know he's family but if you thought he did it...would you want to live with him? And who knows what his behavior was like in that house before the murder. It's interesting to me that neither the stepmom, the older brother, nor the grandfather is really defending him.

At this point I am going to guess that perhaps Priscilla is the one denying his guilt. :(

I'm not getting my hopes up about this press conference. I bet it will be generic stuff about how this is a tragedy for the family and they need their privacy.

Then the family and the cops will say they can't say anything about the case because "it's an ongoing investigation".

But that would be good if the police could actually say what evidence they used to arrest the son.

In regards to the "small pocket knife" he brought to school...

I was in high school when Columbine happened. We actually watched in unfold on television, in my government class. (Schools would never allow that now!!) Of course, the result was a no tolerance on weapons. I got suspended for having a small Swiss army pocket knife on my key chain. (I never even considered it could be used as a weapon.) I could maybe have filed fingernails with it, but certainly could not have really injured anyone.

Now, my personal opinion is that he killed his sister. I'm not defending him. I just think with the "no tolerance " policies, a small pocket knife could mean absolutely nothing.

Interesting, an unnamed source from administration. Especially since just yesterday the school's administration said they could not/would not release that info.

Not doubting the veracity. May very well be true, but I very much dislike the use of the "unnamed" source.

Well they would lose their job if they gave their name....
