I caught a portion of the hearing yesterday. The testimony was centered on Uber - the Detective was being asked about the dates/time he inquired about. Then his lawyer asked the Detective "what about Fed Ex"? Did any of you hear that exchange? I busted up laughing out loud, WTH? This is def an unusual prelim hearing, IMO.
No kidding, every day I've been torn between wanting to laugh or hitting my head against the wall!

I think he knows he is going to trial and probably saving his money for a top notch criminal lawyer. Jmo

That's what I find very strange about Larry. While every state is different, generally, across the country, if the court does not grant a defendant bail, they qualify for a public defender. Regardless, I think there's little doubt that without both Maya's income and Larry's, he'd certainly qualify for a public criminal defense lawyer -- and a vast improvement too!

For the guardianship issue, a civil matter, Larry needed to hire a private attorney. It seems to me he just decided to keep her* to represent him for his murder case. I'm wondering if she's perhaps a family friend.

I dunno, if I needed a heart transplant, I wouldn't hire a podiatrist.

(As somebody that's battled an ingrown toenail, this is in no way a dig against podiatrists)! JMO

I understand what you're saying, after listening to only a brief portion of the trial. I think the judge is also frustrated, he admonished her several times. It was very odd to say the least.

I think the State has proven there is enough evidence to proceed with a trial, I'm not worried about that. But a conviction would be so much easier if they found Maya. Go figure, the one thing he did well ...

I’ve wondered too if she’s a family friend…

I continue to wonder why LM held on to this unqualified family law attorney for so long. She served him poorly during preliminary hearing making both her and LM look foolish. Perhaps LM didn't want to spend his investments on qualified criminal defense lawyer?
My opinion only.
I don't think he thinks he looks foolish!. I think he feels vindicated. I think he thinks he had a duty to stalk May, to prevent her from using what he deemed to be her weak judgment/ free will. What view of oneself does one hold to think one could control how another person thinks????? That the person isn't qite capable of having their thoughts. The freedom to be contrary, to think for oneself. Spells and subliminal messages, it's almost laughable if it were any kind of funny. So oppressive. He was IMO positively rabid, tapes under her bed, levying false accusations at her workplace, tracking her, tightening her reins, like she was chattel.

How miserable he made her life.

It's generous of his counsel to highlight it for the Court. Not a defense strategy with which I'm familiar, but there it is.

Don't mind me, I'm just thinking of all kinds of things here on this lengthy post, consider it me thinking out loud.

The Hearing provided Larry and his attorney an arena to throw some spaghetti at the ceiling, gauge the response to all their accusations about Maya having an affair and their spinning the tale of the "investigation of the allegations" as though her whole work place was involved in some man hunt investigation. (One boss said she wouldn't lose her job over an affair anyways.)
1:59 p.m.: Vicente told Martinez that he has personally interviewed about 80 witnesses over the course of the investigation, including Maya’s sister Maricris Drouaillet. Asked if Drouaillet told him that she did not know where Maya was, Vicente said that was true.
He also confirmed that Drouaillet told him that Maya was having an affair.
Larry's the one who told Maya's Family she was having an affair. I'm not sure if Maricris heard it from Maya or from Larry. I suspect those calls to Maya's work place may have been tied to Larry.

MOO, I think Prosecution should address the supposed affair right off the bat at trial. Get it out in the open then. Clear the air if it's true or not. Take the energy off the defense using a supposed affair. If there was an affair, so what. After hearing all Larry was doing, and how miserable Maya was, there'll be less judgement about an affair, but plenty of judgement to the MURDER of this hard working woman and mother of three children that put up with way too much controlling abuse within her marriage.

Larry's attorney-- pushiness, irking the Judge, so obstinate to keep asking her silly questions, and emphasizing Larry's criminal mentality and abusiveness. It's almost like his defense attorney did it on purpose to ensure there'd be a trial. Could she be thinking this was her chance at notoriety, she'd be on his defense team if it goes to trial?

Then again, I think Larry wanted her as his "mouthpiece to shame Maya". That's what he was into, guilting Maya and shaming her into submission. He felt righteous and moral about it. He just might still want to keep his attorney. MOO, she just might get him convicted she does such a terrible job, but...

I do worry now as someone pointed out he could appeal for ineffective counsel and get another trial. Do you think some well-known attorney would take on this case? I appreciate others sharing their thoughts on this subject.

Prayers that Maya is found soon. As sad as it is, her children need to know the truth. Maya did not run off and leave them. She had just called a divorce attorney, she was going to stick around. All MOO here-- I think the daughters know who did this to their mother. They may be fooling themselves for now because the truth is just too much for their young minds to handle. They love their father too. But they know, and they miss their mother, and those kids are suffering silently with the truth laying on their hearts. I think they need to see Justice done.

Oh ETA-- All thoughts and MOO.

I have a feeling LM will dump this family law attorney after the preliminary hearing wraps up and will hire a proper criminal defense attorney for the trial.

This preliminary hearing is not a trial. There are no jurors. Evidence will be presented, and witnesses will testify over two to three weeks in the Downtown San Diego courthouse. In the end, Judge Dwayne Moring – a former public defender and a former San Diego prosecutor – will decide if there is enough evidence for Millete to go to trial for murder.

Sorry, I'm having a hard time keeping up with this and taking notes. It's full of info. I definitely want to watch it again.

First page of the Search Warrant to look into Maya's Instagram account. Inspector Grindley found pics of Maya, communication with one user, Jamie ******, there were also a select number of friends on this Instagram account compared to the other one, but no communication from others, mainly just with the one person. Almost daily basis starting Sept. 2020. Note-- Larry had contacted Jamie's wife at one point.

In my own words and understanding-- The text highlighted in blue is between Maya and Larry, and he says he takes the same vitamins. Maya says she doesn't want to take them, and Larry says just take half. That's a pic of Maya, and we need to get an enlargement of that note on the side.

In my own words and understanding--
Still struggling to keep up and understand what is being revealed. Just to give you an idea of today's continued testimony from Inspector Grindley. My own understanding is he prepared a more readable exhibit of the google calendar and later the google searches. Searches there was mention of Subliminal Boosters, Messages, Subconscious Blocks, Headaches are mentioned. Fivvra? A market place visited often. Searches-- oh my, now a bunch of drugs like Rohypnol, etc., were just mentioned all sedatives. Must watch this whole testimony over again to fully grasp all the info.

These are searches Maya was making in an attempt to learn more about the finances if she were to get a divorce. Then, Maya starts to move forward towards getting a divorce.

(BTW, IIRC, earlier it was noted that Maya did talk to her older daughter about getting a divorce and she thought the daughter was okay with it.)

Continues tomorrow Tuesday, Jan. 24th at 9:00 a.m. with Prosecution needing a couple of hours. Judge says that then there's a 50/50 chance they'll finish tomorrow.

RE: Preliminary hearing for Larry Millete wraps up day 8 in Downtown San Diego court

Watch this short news clip if you missed some of today's Hearing with DA Investigator Matthew Grindley, currently a gang investigator, but he also, for the last eight years, specializes in "Technology Investigations", and has taught it too. This talks about her communication with Jamie (or Jamey) daily for about five months.

It's possible we won't be able to watch the actual Trial, so being able to watch this Hearing has been invaluable. It has answered some questions we all had.

Of note per the short news clip above, Maya messaged Jamie January 7th, 2021 and said "everything okay". Then, after Maya had contacted and made arrangements for a meeting with a divorce attorney... she disappeared.

Today was different what came out from Investigator Grindley. MOO, I think towards the end of 2020, if there had been an affair, it was over, and they were just friends. That wasn't what caused murderous anger in Larry, IMO, it was that Maya was really going to file for a divorce. All MOO.

“There was audio provided by a neighbor of loud bangs which we collected and forwarded and analyzed by the FBI,” Vicente said. Those sounds were analyzed, but those were not definitely identified as gunshots.”

This cross-examination also featured more than two dozen sustained objections from both Deputy District Attorney Christy Bowles and Judge Dwayne Moring. At one point, it got tense in the courtroom when Judge Moring had to repeatedly ask Martinez to respond to a particular objection. Later on, the judge also admonished Martinez for not being familiar with the investigative files enough to direct witnesses to where information was located, telling her, “You’ve had a year to prepare for this hearing.”
