It makes sense to me that they would want to try the case in California.

Melodee and her Mom and most of the witnesses are from Cali. Melodee was born, went to school and grew up in Cali. AB planned the murder while she was in Cali. Rented the car, probably acquired the gun, made the travel plans, while in Cali.

The investigators would need to base their investigation in Calki and not in Utah. IMO

I’m fine with a California investigation, but I sure would like to see an Utah punishment in this case.

While many community members are mourning, Garcia also shared that some are taking advantage of the national attention. Melodee’s aunt told him there have been numerous fake GoFundMe pages, none of which are run by the family.

“They are fraudulent GoFundMe accounts to try and capitalize on the child’s death, and that, to me, is just outlandish that anybody would do that,” he said.

The family told Garcia that, for now, they are only taking donations directly.

Couldn’t the FBI press charges? Federal… crossing state lines and they were assisting SBSO

MOO since I’ve never worked on the government side, but jurisdiction is going to be a largely political decision. Who wants it, who has the money for it, who would be most efficient, etc. Assuming the threshold legal jurisdiction requirement is met, which it likely will be for California, Utah, and federal jurisdiction.

The most fascinating example of this I’ve seen was a robbery of a patron eating on the patio at a restaurant in Beverly Hills, during which a gun was discharged and another patron was hit by the bullet ricocheting (fortunately a relatively minor injury). At the time this happened, the Los Angeles DA was known for “catch and release” type policies for crimes, while Beverly Hills had/has a more tough on crime philosophy. The suspects ended up being charged federally!

As I recall, the use of a firearm provided a hook to fall under a federal law (or two) on the books so the Feds could assert federal charges, and it was no doubt a political decision to bypass the Los Angeles DA. So they were never actually charged with robbery (a state crime). I’m very curious as to the behind the scenes of how that was accomplished, but the reason for it was obvious — Beverly Hills wanted to make sure the suspects served jail time.

If you'd shown just a little bit of compassion, Melodee could have been spending Christmas with family members who clearly loved her. That's what she deserved.

Ugh, I'm usually pretty good at remaining impartial, but I'm finding the details in this case to be incredibly upsetting
